CANTATE is a non-profit, community, choral organization that is open to the public. No special musical training or experience is necessary.
Audition is not required. You must be willing to commit to a weekly rehearsal, several performances. Cantate was founded by Dr. Lisa Lutter and a 25-member ensemble consisting of a diverse group of individuals ranging from recent college graduates, educators and business professionals. The group has shared the gift of friendship and song in over a hundred concerts at home and on tour. The choir pe
rformed in the Guam staged productions for the Opera of the Pacific’s production of Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ (2000) and Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ (2001). In the summer of 2001, the group competed in World Projects International Music Festival in Australia and proudly brought home GOLD. They performed at the Sydney Town Hall and the world famous Sydney Opera House with choirs from China, Concordia University and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. It was during this tour that World Projects President, William Lutt, offered to arrange future tours for Cantate as a feature choir. Lutt stated that Cantate had distinctive sound that could be attributed to a special bond that the members shared. Through World Projects, in 2002 the choir toured China with performances in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and visited the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Music was shared between choirs from several universities. In 2003, the choir performed as the feature choir for the New York Choral Festival where they performed at the Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center and received a standing ovation. The concert was shared with competing choirs and also featured the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. After the concert an audience member shared that “the Tabernacle Choir was like us talking to God and Cantate was like God talking to us.” During the festival, the choir was given the opportunity to work with Dr. Weston Noble, who is hailed as the nation’s most beloved choral conductor. It was through the workshop that the relationship between Cantate, Dr. Lisa Lutter and Dr. Noble flourished into the Pacific Summer Music Festival. In 2004, Cantate received another invitation from World Projects to be the feature choir in the San Francisco Chorale Festival, where they opened for the “orchestra of voices” Grammy award winning Chanticleer at the Mission Dolores Basilica. Cantate then traveled to Los Angeles to work with Paul Salamunovich, a Grammy-Nominated, American choral conductor and educator and Music Director Emeritus of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Cantate has established itself as the island’s premier chorale hosting its annual Pacific Summer Music Festival, which focuses on providing the opportunity for the community to experience and perform alongside exceptional guest and local musicians. Along with their seasonal concerts, the choir has also performed for Guam staged musical productions, holiday caroling and specials events with the Guam Territorial Band.
