To provide some historical context, let me share a glimpse of the past. In the late 1970s, my grandfather personally undertook the construction of their St. John Island home, with the assistance of two crew members hired from Wi******er, VA. Nana matched his dedication, not only ensuring their well-being but also taking care of their nourishment. I consider myself fortunate, as I had the privilege
of spending my childhood vacationing at this island retreat, even before I could take my first steps from the beach towel to the ocean. Our experiences were diverse, including sailing aboard "Midnight Sun," feeding bananaquits (sugar birds), exploring neighboring islands, learning the art of watercolor painting, tending gardens alongside Nana, and aiding Papa with his orchids. As I grew older, "happy hour" with snacks and a cocktail became a tradition that we never missed. Regrettably, Hurricane Irma claimed the home that Papa had built on September 6, 2017. The ensuing six years were marked by an emotional journey. Come September 2023, we finally completed our new Airbnb, "DreamView On The Hill." This project was a collective endeavor, with my father devoting the majority of his time on the island, working tirelessly and essentially living out of his car, a testament to his unwavering commitment. I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to those who sacrificed their time; they truly understand their significance to us: Dan Herzog, Betsy Pullen, John Young, Dan Erickson, Oliver Foschiatti, Dave Klugherz, Randy, Martha Daddato, Sally Taylor, Shannon Hartfiel, and Donna & Kevin Smith. We prioritize sustainability with our self-sufficient solar panels, ensuring a warm and inviting ambiance throughout. The installation of solar panels was finalized in December 2022, showcasing our dedication to sustainability. These self-sustaining solar panels now provide ample power to sustain our entire home.
If it hadn't been for my grandparents, Velma and Bob Pullen, discovering and developing this property to create a welcoming home for our family and friends, our present-day opportunities and meaningful connections with amazing individuals on this island wouldn't have been possible. Their nurturing and considerate nature have been instrumental, forming lasting friendships and fostering strong bonds that continue to enrich our lives.
1 year anniversary of Hurricane Irma.
We experienced anxiety throughout the entire week leading up to Sept. 6th, a year ago, a day that profoundly altered numerous lives. I had a glimmer of hope that by watching the nest cameras on St. John and the nearby islands, I could find solace. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The nest cams at our home on Gifft Hill went offline at 8:30 am, and soon after, others followed suit. For hours, we scoured websites for updates on the storm's progression.
Once the storm subsided, we reached out to our friends to ensure their safety. It wasn't until after dinner that we received our first response: "We are safe, but lost doors and windows....have no idea about my own house...no major injuries..lots of cleaning up sweeping water and debris out now as sun sets. Looking forward to the morning & sunshine to continue. It's been rough and scarier than any storm I remember."
In the subsequent weeks, we devoted ourselves to assisting St. John in any way we could. We immersed ourselves in Facebook, desperately searching for survivors and acting as a communication bridge between our island friends and those on the mainland, trying to locate their loved ones. We also reached out to Gifft Hill school to determine what assistance they required and contacted friends and family in the States, seeking their donations. It was truly incredible teamwork.
In the following months, we made trips to clear our property where our home once stood. Surprisingly, this unfortunate journey introduced us to extraordinary individuals. I'm grateful to say that these people have become lifelong friends, now akin to family, who have already shown unwavering support and done everything in their power to assist each other and St. John. Our thoughts, love, and numerous hugs go out to all those affected by this one-year anniversary of Hurricane Irma. Much love to all.
