Kia ora gapit50 fans followers and whanau - some sad news today we are taking a gap from the gap it adventure returning home to NZ in the next day or so - hopefully we’ll get back out there again soon but for now we are pausing the adventure .

who thought from February to June we could see so much do so much and travel - we can say we’ve night trained to Istanbul, kissed at the Eiffel Tower, cruised the Greek Islands, remembered the fallen in Gallipoli, visited count draculas castle, re enacted the Game of Thrones, been robbed in the South of France, planed trained shipped biked campervanned ferried driven walked climbed scootered swam sailed around 3 continents to visit those 24 countries - wow - it really has been an adventure

Family to us is more important then anything else - knowing how much we love to travel and how long we’ve been dreaming planning scheming and saving for the gapit50 journey should give you a good indication on where our priorities sit - so its home for now and hopefully sooner then later we’ll be back out there doing it.

We’ve appreciated the love support and encouragement along the way - it’s been a blast to have you all along for the ride - we’ve got more content to share because we’ve only really scratched the surface of what we’ve seen so stay tuned more will be coming

The dreams not over just on pause - gapit while you can!!

A massive collection of artists works, such as Raphael and Michelangelo. One of our highlights was finally seeing one of the most recognisable paintings. ‘The Creation of Adam’ which represents God and Adam reaching for each other with their arms outstretched.
Many rooms were also full of marble statures and lined with floor to ceiling paintings. Stunning 😉

Construction of the Colosseum began around 70–75 AD. It’s famous for being the world's largest amphitheate. For such a huge structure it’s amazing it only took 7/8 years to build. Another definite experience, especially the twilight tour.

The Patheon built between 25 and 27 BC. It is the only ancient Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries and it is amazing inside. Definitely a must see if you find yourself in Rome.

WE GOT ROBBED

Well that’s what lay- people say anyway. You get loads of warnings about pickpockets in Paris but the south of France medieval villages open daylight public Carpark’s rarely get a mention.

We’ve been a little bit quiet the last 48 hours after we had our Campervan broken into in the south of France (parked up in a public carpark while we went out for dinner - in daylight even 😳)

So the nearly “worst case” scenario happened for the gapit50 team - we were cleaned out. Bags clothes shoes electronics pretty much you name it it’s gone BUT we have our passports 🙏🏽 laptops (but no chargers) iPhones and about two days worth of clothes and some deodorant.

So it was a late night with Police doing a forensic exam on the van then following Apple AirTags all around these southern French villages but still no luck getting our stuff back. (It kind of feels like getting fingernails pulled - the AirTag locations ping on our phones telling us where our bags were like “2 minutes ago” but we are now 500kms away or the Police are unreachable)

A big day of driving yesterday and visits to about 4 police stations along the way trying to do the formal police report (police stations in France don’t open till after 3pm - gotta love those hours) and then arriving in Nantes France just before midnight (this is where we drop our van off to fly for our next locale).

Suffice to say it’s been challenging mentally and now physically (it’s raining outside and we have no raincoats because they were stolen too) with an estimated loss of 3-5k the money part doesn’t hurt because of travel insurance (well it does hurt actually because we are budget travellers - and it’s pretty hard to “backpack” when you have no backpacks) but the logistics of finding replacing and matching is a psychological nightmare.

Long story short - stealing sucks - if you are a thief thinking mmmmm there’s a nice easy tourist target - please don’t break into their van and take their stuff - they’re probably a long way from home on the trip of a lifetime and you maybe the reason their dream is over.

Shorter story - wearing pyjamas is ok in public when all of your stuff got stolen but it’s not ok when you’re just at home and going to the supermarket.

Most important - always carry your passport with you

One of the most famous monuments in Paris. Formally known as —the étoile or "star" as it stands in the centre of twelve radiating avenues. It honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces.

Wow the Berlin Wall - do you remember watching it come down in 1989? We were 17 and 19 when it happened - it’s awesome to see this symbol of oppression and captivity turned into a memorial of hope and freedom (and art of course)
