Powis Castle, under the protection of the National Trust, has fantastic views across the Severn Valley.

Famous for its mild climate, fertile soil and gently rolling hills, in the 12th century, the kingdom of Powys was already known as 'the paradise of Wales'.

Powis Castle was built in the mid-13th century by a Welsh prince - Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn - wanting to establish his independence from his traditional enemies, the aggressive princes of Gwynedd (North Wales).

This is in contrast to the other castles of North Wales (such as Caernarfon, Harlech and Conwy) which were built by the English to consolidate Edward I’s conquest of Wales.

Fidra Lighthouse and Yellowcraig Beach

After expropriation of the land, the lighthouse on Fidra was built in the traditional Scottish manner by Thomas and David Stevenson and first lit in 1885.

The round brick lighthouse is painted white and is three stories high. It has a golden yellow painted gallery supporting a black lantern house. A 2-storey house with adjoining workshops had been built on the tower, but were later removed.

Interesting is the cable-drawn narrow-gauge railway from the concrete quay on the east side to the lighthouse for the supply of goods. Most of the rails and sheaves used to guide the winch wire are still in place. Embedded in the concrete but strongly overgrown by vegetation.

The light displays a group of 4 flashes every 30 seconds and was one of the first offshore lights to become fully automatic in 1970. In 1970 this was the NLB's first lighthouse to be converted into an unmanned automatic installation (monitored from St Abbs Head lighthouse). Before that, the lighthouse was connected to the public electricity supply and telephone cables by means of underground sea cables.

Managed to capture a couple birds while at the beach. :-)......................................

Bass Rock Lighthouse - In July 1897, the commissioners of the Northern Lights - now the NLB - decided to place two lighthouses on the Haddingtonshire coast because the unguarded coast caused concern. A lighthouse was placed on the Bass Rock and the second lighthouse became the Barns Ness lighthouse near Dunbar. The tower guards the relatively narrow passage between the island and North Berwick, rather than the main entrance into the Firth of Forth, from which it is hidden by the main mass of the island. (The Firth of Forth is the main entrance to Edinburgh)

The Bass Rock Lighthouse is a 20-meter-high tower and is built on the south side of the island, under the responsibility of designer David A. Stevenson, who demolished the house of the administrator and some other buildings on the island to use the stones for the construction of the lighthouse and the surrounding technical buildings and keeper’s houses. The construction costs of the Bass Rock lighthouse were, in 1902, £8,087.......................................

Belton House, a National Trust site in Lincolnshire, was offered to the War Office for use during The Great War, by Adelbert, 3rd Earl Brownlow, who had considerable political experience of war, not least as Under-Secretary of State for War (1889-1892). He had seen the need for a strong army and good training through Britain's involvement in the Boxer Rebellion and Second Boer War.......................................

The ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland, England.

One of the most atmospheric and inspiring castles in England, Dunstanburgh Castle was built in the second decade of the 14th century by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, the wealthiest nobleman in England. Earl Thomas was later executed for his role in the barons’ rebellion against Edward II, but the castle was extensively modernized in the 1380s under John of Gaunt. It played a role as a Lancastrian stronghold in the Wars of the Roses, but fell into disrepair at the end of the Middle Ages, and its ever more ruinous silhouette inspired many artists, including JMW Turner. Recent research has radically altered our perceptions of both the extent of the castle and the nature of its surrounding landscape in the Middle Ages.......................................

Scotland's Golf Coast is home to Tantallon Castle and Bass Rock Island & Lighthouse! Close to Dunbar, these two icons are steeped in rich history.

Tantallon was the last truly great castle built in Scotland. William Douglas, a nobleman, built the mighty fortress in the mid-1300s, at the height of his power. Unfortunately, the castle was besieged several times (James IV in 1491, James V in 1528, and in a final blow of devastation, Oliver Cromwell in 1651), and fell into abandonment.

Bass Rock is a steep crag on the southern entrance to the Firth of Forth. It is an important nesting ground for seabirds. In addition to hosting its picturesque lighthouse, halfway up the Rock stands the ruins of a Pre-Reformation Chapel which was dedicated to Saint Baldfred, and was consecrated in the year 1542. Saint Baldfred was said to have his cell on the Bass Rock, dying there about the year 606.

On the shores of Seacliff Beach, a couple of friends riding horses galloped by - hoping they might be followers of Dunbar Arts!......................................

Mission San Juan Capistrano, historic landmark and museum, is the Birthplace of Orange County. It was founded more than two hundred years ago as the 7th of 21 missions statewide and features a chapel still standing where Saint Serra once celebrated Mass. Today, it is a monument to California’s multi-cultural history, embracing its Native American, Spanish, Mexican and European heritage. Originally built as a self sufficient community by Spanish Padres and Native Americans, the Mission was a center for agriculture, industry, education and religion. Famous for the Annual Return of the Swallows, Mission San Juan Capistrano is the “Jewel of the California Missions” and welcomes over 300,000 visitors each year.......................................

Mission San Gabriel was originally established by Father Pedro Cambon and Father Jose Somera under the direction of Father Junipero Serro in 1771 as the fourth of twenty-one Spanish missions. Setting up the missions in the wilderness of a new land that was still very much unknown and unexplored, the Franciscan fathers felt called to convert the local Indians to the Catholic religion and, at the same time, to teach them the skills useful to peasants in an agricultural community. With land holdings encompassing all of present-day Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties and resident Indians who had been trained to weave and sew, care for livestock and crops, tan leather, and tend orange trees and vineyards, the Mission San Gabriel prospered.......................................

In the Cotswolds region of South Gloucestershire sits the beautiful National Trust site of Dyrham Park, which was created in the 17th century by William Blathwayt. It is an early example of how a fortune made from empire was invested in a landed estate, transforming Dyrham into one of the most notable stately homes of its age.

Often called "Atomic Annie", the M65 Atomic Cannon was a towed artillery piece designed and built by the United States to fire a nuclear warhead from the ground. Developed in the early 1950s, Atomic Annie was rolled out in the European and Korean theaters in 1953.

On May 25, 1953, at 8:30 a.m. local time, Atomic Annie fired the first and only nuclear shell to be launched from a cannon in a test carried out at a Nevada Test Site and attended by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Arthur W. Radford and Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson. After the test went off without a hitch - the shell traveled for approximately seven miles before detonating - at least 20 Atomic Annies were manufactured for nearly $1 million each. The weapon was retired 10 years later, in 1963.

In 1974 the commander of Fort Riley’s 1st Infantry Division – the Big Red One of movie fame – managed to acquire the gun, for installation and display on post. He chose the site on the southern side of I-70, overlooking the airfield and clearly visible to potential visitors. The task of bringing the gun to the site fell to the 34th Engineer Battalion, which had to coordinate with numerous state and local officials, as well as local farmers, to move the gun to the site in 1975.......................................

Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world's largest gypsum dune field. White Sands National Park preserves a major portion of this unique dune field, along with the plants and animals that live here.

Anglesey Abbey, a Jacobean-style house with gardens and a working watermill, is currently managed by the National Trust. Before this, Lord Fairhaven lived at Anglesey Abbey from 1926 until his death in 1966. During this time, he created a comfortable country home with an eclectic collection of antiquities dating from the early Tudor period through to the 1960s. However, the building has a long and fascinating history that stretches back nine centuries*.

I also managed to get in on the last day of the gorgeous Dahlia garden being on display!

Dunster Castle, now a National Trust site inside Exmoor National Park, has sat at its commanding location since the Middle Ages: a perfect site for a castle, both visually impressive and easily defended. It has been transformed through the ages from a fortress to a family home, having been owned by only two families throughout its history.

Penmon Point, on Anglesey Island in Wales, is known for its lighthouse, but the Dovecote and St. Seiriol Priory Church are quite the pair to visit as well... and, at least for me, the old tree steals the show! :D

The Dovecote, is a bird box on a truly epic scale. At first glance, it's hard to believe that this massive structure was built to house pigeons and doves.

Penmon’s history stretches back to the 6th century, when a monastery was established here by St Seiriol. The holy well (with reputed healing properties) that bears his name is thought to be associated with this period, though the ‘cell’ that houses it is a much later construction. The remains of the priory that stand today largely date from the 13th century, when it became part of the Augustinian order.......................................

The Bembridge Windmill, the last surviving mill on the Isle of Wight, was built in the early 1700s when Bembridge was almost an island in its own right, cut off from the rest of the island. Though it's now protected by the National Trust, it had gone from being as an artistic inspiration for JMW Turner to being used as a shelter and lookout during the World Wars.......................................
