Excited to be back on the Somme this weekend for the first Khaki Jack Tour of 2025. Some new locations and most importantly some new stories of the fallen of the Great War.

A drive back from the Alps and an overnight stop in Arras gave a good excuse to call in at Bucquoy Road CWGC Cemetery. I’ve driven past it many times enroute to the Somme, but never paused to visit the casualties resting here.
Some fascinating headstones in this vast plot:
1. Private Joseph Standing Buffalo, a sniper in the CEF. He was a First Nation Canadian of the Sioux Tribe, allegedly the Grandson on Chief Sitting Bull, of Custers Last Stand and Little Bighorn Fame. He was lost during the attack on Bourlon Wood.
2. Private Ernest Horler, who grew up in Yeovil, living in South Street. A very sad case of multiple desertions and absences, he was finally Shot at Dawn for desertion. His mother chose his Personal Inscription.
3. 2nd Lt Philip Lister aged only 17 - one of the youngest officers to serve, having left Warminster School, presumably at 16. He was killed leading his men into battle on the first day of the Battle of Arras

A poignant discussion with HMS Pegasus - the RNR Air Branch, on the Royal Naval Division’s role on the Western Front. The RND story is one of determination, resilience, and sacrifice. From their formation and key characters, to their defining battles, we explored what gave them such a unique culture. Most importantly, we remembered their immense sacrifice: 46,794 casualties over the four years of the Great War.
