Ouarzazate, the capital of the Ouarzazate Province in the region of Drâa-Tafilalet, Morocco, is nicknamed the door of the desert as it's en route to the Sahara. We had a wonderful tour of this area after the PURE Life Experiences show.

Films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Man Who Would Be King, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Kundun, Legionnaire, The Hills Have Eyes and many, many more have been shot in this scenic part of the world.

If you've traveled to Joburg with us, there is a very good chance you've visited James Delaney's artist studio or maybe even met and toured the city with James. This TEDx talk shares the remarkable story of how community efforts (led by Delaney Artist) breathed new life into The Wilds, a once-forgotten 40-acre park in the inner city of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Happy World Tourism Day! This year's theme, as set by the United Nations, is "Tourism and Peace." Tourism is often highlighted for its role in economic development, but it also plays a significant role in fostering peace. The UN says: "On a global level, where nations are interconnected and interdependent, tourism, an industry made by people and for people, emerges as a compelling and dynamic force to defy stereotypes and challenge prejudices."

We agree - tourism brings people together!

We have to share a few more images from our time at Atelier Talasin in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco - the process and work are too beautiful not too. You may have visited Atelier Talasin's booth at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe.

From IFAM's site: "Atelier Talasin is a women's cooperative devoted to preserving the ancient art of carpet weaving. At the helm is Fatima, a seasoned weaver with over two decades of mastery under her belt.Together, they've embarked on a mission to breathe new life into the Berber knot and revive the age-old dyeing techniques using henna, just like their forebears did.

Their process is as intimate as it is intricate. Locally sourced wool from Siroua sheep is carefully hand-spun into yarn using traditional drop spindles. Every stage of crafting is a collaborative dance, with each weaver lending their touch to the design and production of these exquisite carpets. Inspired by the patterns of ancient Amazigh culture and the breathtaking landscape surrounding them, each creation is a homage to their rich heritage.

Through unwavering dedication and meticulous research, Atelier Talasin has rekindled the flame of this traditional craft, honoring the legacy of the Berber people. But it's more than just making carpets; it's about instilling pride and empowerment in their community. By forging direct ties with local shepherds and empowering women with the skills of natural dyeing and weaving, they've fostered independence and sustainability.

Their journey is a testament to the spirit and ingenuity of the Amazigh people. These carpets not only capture the essence of their cultural richness but also stand as a symbol of hope for generations to come. Atelier Talasin ensures that the legacy of their ancestors thrives in the modern world, weaving together tradition and innovation for a brighter future."

Loved our quick visit to Atelier Talasin in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains before the PURE show.

Talasin is an Amazigh female name meaning "stories" or "tales," and Atelier Talasin seeks to preserve, revitalize, and elevate Morocco’s ancient craft of weaving handmade rugs.

They use the original Berber knot, which is tied around two to four warps, allowing for a chunkier pile and henna, adding other ingredients like indigo, lemon and turmeric to achieve different tones, for the dye.

Special thanks, again, to founder Shane Ordovás and to Fatima for showing us around!

We saw even more amazing handcrafted products and met more talented craftspeople at Coral Stephens Handweaving on our International Folk Art Market Passport to Folk Art: eSwatini trip. From the spindle maker, to carders, to the dye lab, and of course, the weavers - it was another incredible stop!

Coral Stephens Handweaving was established near Piggs Peak more than 60 years ago. They produce a range of finely woven décor products (throws, blankets, cushion covers, tableware, scarves and shawls) and sell from their shop at the Peak Craft Centre as well as exporting world wide. Here mohair is handspun to create unique blankets which have excellent insulation properties. They are beautiful to look at and the fiber is completely organic, sustainable and local (mohair coming from Eastern Cape of South Africa and Lesotho.)

What fun to stop by long time International Folk Art Market participants Tintsaba Crafts for a guided tour as part of our Passport to Folk Art trip to eSwatini!

Tintsaba produces some of the best handmade baskets in the world, alongside other beautiful products all made from sisal, a sustainable plant that grows naturally in eSwatini. Tintsaba was founded by the late Sheila Freemantle in 1985 with a vision to work with rural women in order for them to achieve financial independence. We saw firsthand how everything is created and learned about the history of the company. Shelia’s husband, Richard, along with the Tintsaba team, continues this work in her memory, upholding the ideals on which Tintsaba was built: excellence, team work, commitment to the earth and the holistic well-being of their groups.

Passport to Folk Art Trips are a program of the International Folk Art Market, and give participants the exclusive opportunity to meet master folk artists in their home countries. Each trip includes a donation to the Folk Art Market allowing the organization to continue supporting folk artists worldwide.

Our Folk Art Market Passport to Folk Art: eSwatini group really enjoyed learning about the work done at Quazi Design, where local women artisans transform discarded magazines into original accessories and interior design elements through a variety of techniques - rolling, layering, or pulp. We tried our hand at rolling and learned it's not easy!

This workshop is situated in Sidwashini, in the industrial area of Mbabane, the capital city of Eswatini. All artisans are employed full time with permanent contracts, giving them job security and a living wage. Be sure to visit their sites to see the amazing products they make with recycled magazines.

Thank you Baobab Batik Swaziland, for another great visit on our International Folk Art Market Passport to Folk Art: eSwatini tour! Founded in 1991 by Els Hooft, Baobab Batik now employs 25 women full-time who earn almost four times the national minimum wage. The women can also take advantage of benefits like interest-free loans to pay school fees for their children and 3 months paid maternity leave. The batik process they use involves tracing a design onto the fabric and applying layers of melted wax inside the lines. The wax dries and the fabric is then dyed according to the colors desired. After the dyeing process is complete, the wax is removed from the fabric to reveal beautiful patterns that are never exactly the same.

Another stop for the International Folk Art Market Passport to Folk Art: eSwatini group was to the Khokho Collection studio, located on Malandela's Farm in Malkerns. Khokho craftspeople create exquisite handbags from straw and imported Italian leather. Led by an Italian master craftsman with over 40 years of experience in crafting luxury handbags for Burberry and Marc Jacobs, a leather training program has been initiated here that trains local technicians in the art of pattern making, cutting and construction.

Together with the weaving cooperative Buhle baKhokho, they are able to transform traditional weaving techniques into specialized panels for Khokho handbags. Buhle baKhokho – translated to Beauty of the Great Grandmothers – is a self-governed cooperative of 12 female weavers from the Ntondozi region of Eswatini.

The International Folk Art Market Passport to Folk Art: eSwatini group visited Gone Rural Eswatini, a co-op created to empower women in some of Eswatini's most remote areas. Its founder, Jenny Thorne, began small income-generation projects in the 1970s with rural women across the country. She later moved her focus to the mountainous areas where the beautiful lutindzi grass was growing and women were already weaving, designing handwoven products that rural women would create to earn a fair and sustainable source of income.

Our group was able to watch how grass is dried in the sun and then dyed in vats. We were also there on a day when women come in from the villages with grass they have collected to exchange for dyed grass so they can weave new creations, as well as women who came with finished pieces, ready for sale. Thorne's three sons and their wives continue to run this business today.

Our International Folk Art Market Passport to Folk Art trip to the Kingdom of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) has been in full swing! One of our first stops was to visit the Umhlanga, or Reed Dance ceremony, which takes place at the end of August or beginning of September each year in eSwatini. Some 200,000 unmarried women come from villages all over Swaziland for a week to present reeds to the King and First Mother and it all culminates with dances.
