Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri trailer is out! This film has scenes filmed in Sylva, Asheville and right here in Maggie Valley!

"A darkly comic drama from Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh. After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated."

CATALOOCHEE SKI AREA'S 53RD SEASON IS ALMOST HERE
Known for offering one of the longest ski seasons in the south, Cataloochee Ski Area is gearing up to kick off their 53rd season in the NC Smokies. Historically, Cataloochee is one of the first ski areas to open in the region and one of the very last to close. Located at an elevation of over 5,000 ft, Cataloochee offers the latest and greatest in snow making technology (which is often enhanced by natural snowfall throughout the winter), so you're guaranteed to enjoy some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the southeast.

Whether you're a first timer or a long time winter sports enthusiast, Cataloochee offers opportunities for all skill levels. You'll find 18 slopes of various skills levels - 44% beginner, 39% intermediate, and 17% advanced to expert. Newbies can get started on the "Begginers Luck" slope while the pros can tackle the black diamond "Omigosh".

If you prefer to "sit and slide" visit Cataloochee's premier snow tubing park, Tube World, located at the base of Fie Top Mountain. You'll find multiple snow tubing slaloms and even a Wee Bowl Snowplay area for the youngest members of your crew.

Don't forget to make the most of your winter vacation by checking out Cataloochees' various programs like Kids Ski Free.

EARLY FALL REPORT SAYS A STUNNING FALL IS IN STORE
The verdict is in and one thing is for certain: Haywood County is the place to be this autumn for incredible fall foliage. According to the early report from our friends over at Western Carolina University, this fall is going to play host to some of the most beautiful autumn color in years.
Due to a drier than usual spring and summer, the fall leaf color in the mountains of Western North Carolina should be putting on a more spectacular show than it has in many years, according to Western Carolina University’s autumnal season prognosticator Kathy Mathews. “This fall could be one of the best leaf color seasons in Western North Carolina in recent memory,” Mathews said. - Excerpts courtesy of the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Haywood County’s rolling Smoky Mountains, 46 miles of scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and miles of pristine hiking trails make the county one of the very best destinations for prime leaf-peeping. We may be a bit partial, but we think the towns of Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, Canton and Clyde are the very best spots to stay and play this fall. In Memory of Mayor Ron DeSimone

It is with heavy hearts that we forgo this weeks newsletter as we turn our thoughts to Maggie Valley to honor the life and legacy of Mayor Ron DeSimone. The board of directors and staff of the Haywood TDA are deeply saddened by the passing of Mayor DeSimone and we extend our sincerest condolences and sympathies to Ron's wife, daughters, family and friends. People like Mayor DeSimone are a rarity. He was a visionary with a deep love for not only his town but all the communities of Haywood County. His smile and positive energy were contagious to all those around him. Ron cared so much for the community and wanted nothing more than to see it grow and flourish. He was an advocate for tourism and a dear friend to the Haywood TDA. We worked closely with Ron on many projects, one of the most recent being the planning for the 2nd annual WinterFest Smoky Style. His passion and vision to bring a fun, family event to Maggie Valley during the winter months was inspiring. He did not let a chance of cold weather or any other obstacle get in the way of providing a quality event for his community and it's visitors. Haywood County has lost a tremendous leader and an amazing person who we will miss dearly.

Together as a community, we invite you to carry on the legacy of Mayor DeSimone as we remember to live every day with the same passion, inspiration and love that Ron did.

MAGGIE VALLEY — Ronald Francis “Ron” DeSimone, 62, of Brannon Forest, passed away Friday, July 17, 2015.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Angela M. DeSimone, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, and the late Frank S. DeSimone.
Ron was a 1971 graduate of McArthur High School in Hollywood, Florida, and also graduated from Broward Community College before attending the University of Miami. He worked for several truss construction companies and became a commercial and residential contractor in 1980.
Moving to Haywood County in 1999, he established his own construction company in 2002, Ron DeSimone Contracting LLC. In 2011, he successfully ran and won the office of mayor of the town of Maggie Valley and was currently serving in that position. He was a member and past president of the Haywood County Home Builder’s Association and was a licensed real estate broker. Ron enjoyed the outdoors, music and playing his guitar, and was also an avid reader. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
In addition to his mother, Ron is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joann Corriveau DeSimone; two daughters, Carolyn DeSimone, of Clinton, Tennessee, and Jennifer Smith and husband, Taylor, of Belmont; sister, Patricia DeSimone, of Maggie Valley; two brothers, Robert DeSimone and spouse, Nick Dagenais, of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and Frank DeSimone, of Santa Barbara, California; and other close family members.

No Fishing Licenses Needed to Fish on July 4th

July 4 is free fishing day in North Carolina. From 12:01 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., everyone in North Carolina can fish in any public body of water without purchasing a fishing license or additional trout fishing license.

Residents and non-residents can fish for free in public, inland waters, as well as coastal waters, although they will need to abide by all other fishing regulations, such as size and creel limits, as well as lure restrictions.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission stocks a variety of fish in public, inland waters across the state throughout the year to give anglers a better chance of catching fish. Staff stocks cool mountain waters with brook, brown and rainbow trout, as well as walleye and muskellunge. In warm waters, staff stocks largemouth bass, American shad, striped bass, channel catfish and sunfishes.

The agency also provides access to free fishing sites across the state, including public fishing areas and boating access areas. The interactive fishing and boating maps on the Commission’s website list more than 500 fishing and boating areas, most of which are free, that are open to the public.

Authorized by the N.C. General Assembly and enacted in 1994, North Carolina’s annual free fishing day always falls on July 4. On all other days of the year, a fishing license is not required for anglers 15 years and younger, but anyone age 16 and older must have a fishing license to fish in any public water in North Carolina, including coastal waters. To purchase a license:
• Call the Commission at 1-888-248-6834. Hours of operation are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., 7 days a week;
• Go to www.ncwildlife.org using a computer or mobile device;
• Visit a local Wildlife Service Agent.

Please help spread the word and let visitors know that they can take advantage of this free opportunity to enjoy our many pristine creeks and river during their holiday stay.

Also remind them they can fish year round on the Mountain Heritage Trout Waters in Haywood County by purchasing a three-day fishing license for ONLY $5.00 from the Wildlife Commission. Maps for these designated waters can be picked up at our visitor centers AND people can rent fishing equipment for a small refundable deposit at the Maggie Valley Visitor Center.
