Kerala as on date 4th September

This is about Kerala.

I am happy to let you know that Kerala as a destination is reviving on the whole and situation after the massive floods is improving on a daily basis.

Houseboats are operating. Airport is functioning smooth.

All roads are open now. All touristic activities have resumed including the Periyar ecotourism activities, Munnar sightseeing places are open.

With regard to Munnar, road is open. Temporarily the roads have been cleaned up and all light motor vehicles are being allowed to ply.

Yesterday our Regional Manager and our Transport Manager drove to Munnar in person to check the road condition, sightseeing places and the overall experience it could give to any tourists who visit Munnar after floods. Driving time taken was 4.5 hours from Cochin. Temporarily roads have been made by cleaning up the land slide part and so there are chances to have variation in driving hours until the roads are fixed permanently. Vehicles up to tempo travellers are allowed but mini or Large coaches cannot ply on the existing roads. Our team visited Eravikulam national park, Tea museum, Mattupetty dam, Eco Point, Kundala dam & Top station. All these sightseeing places are indeed safe to visit. So in Munnar, Guests can visit Tea museum, Mattupetty dam, Eco Point, Kundala dam & Top station, enjoy the beauty of misty mountains, valleys, tea gardens, etc.

However please note, the park is 7kms away from Munnar town to Eravikulam national park entry area. To drive from Munnar to Eravikulam national park, guests need to cross a bridge which is 3kms away from Munnar town. This bridge is completely damaged in landslide. As of now vehicles are being stopped near the bridge and the guest need to walk on the temporary walkway made with concrete beam to cross the bridge. Once the guest crosses the bridge, a Tuk-Tuk (minimum Rs. 100 one way per tuk-tuk) need to be arranged to reach Eravikulam National park entry area and vice versa. As of now temporary bridge work is in progress and hopefully it will get ready within one or two weeks’ time.

Unfortunately while we drive, on the way to Munnar, we can see number of landslide hit areas (25 spots) with piled up mud and building debris on the road side which gives a very grave look. This site would only create any tourist a negative impact about Munnar. Most importantly, we are bringing clients to Munnar for a holiday and not for any adventure. So I personally feel that we should skip Munnar until 15th September as the situation will definitely improve by then. Let us not show clients how the city got affected in floods and landslide. In fact, till date we couldn’t get back few of our vehicles that got stuck in Munnar during floods as there is no proper road yet. It would take at least a week to 10 days for us to release the vehicle.

If in case, you are particular about sending clients to Munnar, then it is better to explain them clearly in detail the exact condition, also keep them informed that they would come across landslide hit areas along with the wreckages etc. However this will definitely create a negative impact & it would affect tourism on a long run basis. Hence it is wise to wait for another 10 to 15 days before sending guests to Munnar.

I understand that there are news in the media about water borne disease in Kerala. Please note this was reported in Malappuram area and there are no epidemics reported elsewhere in Kerala. As you know our media focuses more on their well-being than handling things from tourism perspective. So things are under control as Kerala Government is doing excellent work. There is no need to panic. Let us pray earnestly for the well-being of Gods’ own country .

With regard to Coorg, there is no rain in the last 2 days. However due to massive destruction and the extensive restoration work that is in progress, the District Authority in Coorg has issued orders not to allow tourists to Coorg and also not to open hotels until 9th September 2018.

I hope the above information is useful to plan your trip in South India.

KUMBH MELA, Allahabad (Prayag)
January 2019 to March 4th 2019

Where: January-to March 2019, Allahabad, North India, by the banks of the River Ganga.
Ascetics engrossed in deep Sadhna (spiritual practice) in the caves of the Himalayas, well-heeled international spiritual gurus (and also frauds), filmmakers, photographers, journalists, tourists, celebrities, devouts, faithfuls and heretics alike will draw the largest religious gathering of pilgrims in the world at the Kumbh Mela, which was included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2017.

Many say that this is nothing but India's obsession with anything religious, but nowhere in the world has such contrasts co-existed in complete harmony in a makeshift city built on a river bed - laid out on a grid, constructed and deconstructed within a matter of weeks. The logistics and economics behind this "pop-up mega-city" was a case study for the Graduate School of Design of the Harvard University. “The Kumbh Mela,” noted the Graduate School of Design at the Harvard University, “inspires interdisciplinary research in a number of complementary fields- pilgrimage and religious studies, public health, design, communications, business, and infrastructure engineering converge at this festival, producing a complex atmosphere which can be extended to situations outside of religious pilgrimage in a variety of places and situations, in particular camps for refugees of war and natural disasters”.

According to ancient Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu dropped drops of Amrita (the drink of immortality) at four places, while carrying it in a kumbha (pot). These four places are identified as the present-day sites of the Kumbh Mela.

When does it happen:
• ARDH (Half) KUMBH MELA: Every 6 years
• MAHA (Full) KUMBH MELA: Every 12 years

*The one in Jan 2019 is an Ardh Kumbh Mela at Allahabad whilst the Maha Kumbh Mela is scheduled for 2025 at Allahabad (Prayag) after 12 'Purna Kumbh Melas. The Kumbh Mela is held at four places- Allahabad (Prayag), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik based on planetary movements. Very specific Planetary alignments that happen periodically are considered auspicious days for praying & bathing in the holy rivers, determining the dates for each of the Kumbh mela .

Important Bathing & Auspicious Dates during the Kumbh Mela.

Dates(2019) Event
14th /15th January First Royal bath /Makar Sankranti
21st January Paush Purnima
4th February Mauni Amavasya (Main & second Royal Bath )
10th February Basant Panchami (Third Royal Bath)
19th February Maghi Poornima
4th March Maha Shivratri

What to expect:
1. A SEA OF HUMANITY: When the Maha Kumbh Mela of 2013 ended after 5 weeks, approximately 100 million people moved into and out of Allahabad. It took 60 years for the population of Istanbul to grow from one to 10 million, and 50 years in the case of Lagos. At Allahabad, though, in 2013, the population rose from zero to 10 million, give or take a few million, in just a week’s time. So expect a sea of humanity.

2. RITUALS: The main ritual is bathing in the River Ganga - India's most venerated River. It is believed that if you take a dip in the Ganga during the Kumbh days, your sins will be purified. So millions congregate with the sole mission of taking a dip in the Ganga. Many sleep under the sky in the freezing cold huddled together, take a dip at the crack of dawn and move on. It is a time for good karma with even the poorest of the poor doing their bit in whatever little way they can afford to do so.

3. SADHUS (Ascetics): Thousands of them with long matted hair, some totally naked with ash smeared all over their body. A photographer’s delight. But make sure that permission is taken before clicking photos.

4. SATSANGS: Satsangs are a very important part of the Ardh Kumbh Mela. Devotees sit for hours and listen to the Sadhus who preach. During the mela there are a lot of ashrams and halls where people can offer prayers. One can go and sit inside if they want to hear what the priests have to say about Hinduism and spiritualism as these saints have a good knowledge of religion.

Good to know:
During the Maha Kumbh Mela of 2013 in Allahabad, 14 temporary hospitals staffed with 243 doctors were set up. There were more than 40,000 toilets, and 50,000 police officials to maintain order.

Connectivity:
By Road: Allahabad falls on National Highway No. 2, connecting New Delhi to Kolkata. Apart from that many states highways connect Allahabad to Madhya Pradesh & Rajasthan also. Good road connectivity makes it an effortless transit from Allahabad to Lucknow or Varanasi airports.

By Air: Allahabad is at distance of 150 Kms from Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport at Varanasi and 200 Kms from Amausi International Airport in Lucknow. Also both the airports are well connected to the rest of India.

By Rail: Allahabad has eight railway stations within the city, with good connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Patna, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Gwalior and Jaipur. During the Kumbh Mela, Railways make few temporary halts/small stations also to decongest the main railway stations & to give better approach to the mela ground.

Kerala is suffering

I don’t understand why ‘God’s own country’ has to suffer like this, is God so angry with his own country…. I don’t know what to say as Nature has to calm down and we all have to pray for the Grace of God for Kerala and its people. Nothing has changed as things are only getting worsened as time & day passes. I am sorry to give you all negative news but this is the fact right now.

As heavy rain continues in Kerala, Kochi Airport will remain suspended until 26th August. It’s very sad that situation is worsening in many parts of Kerala as water level keeps increasing and interrupts rescue works.

Please note Houseboat operations have completely been stopped due to rising water level. There is no access to reach houseboat as everywhere its flooded. It is so pathetic that most of the houseboat staff have lost their houses to floods. Some of our staff’s houses are also submerged and they are being assisted by the rescue team.

Another unfortunate situation is that after floods, drinking water supply is hit as gushing flood waters due to rains have affected pumping operations & the state is facing acute shortage of drinking water. Many of the water treatment plants and major drinking water sources have either been damaged or have been flooded with water.

So, for the next 7 to 10 days, please don’t think to send any guests to Kerala as the state needs to settle down and there are more challenges like threat of water borne diseases as well. Let us keep Kerala in our prayers and extend all possible support to them in any ways. That is the only effective thing we can do for the flood victims right now.

This is further to our update about Munnar landslips and rain in Kerala.

Finally, we have a good news to share. Things seems to change positively in Kerala. Rain stopped completely in Munnar, Cochin & Periyar. Sun is shining brightly in these areas. So, rescue work is in progress. Rescue team is on full swing, removing uprooted trees, clearing road blockages etc. However, it is still recommended not to send any guests to Munnar for the next 2 to 3 days as the roads leading to Munnar are affected and in bad condition. So let the rescue team carry on their rescue operation without any interruption.

Please note in Periyar, Boat ride and Eco tourism activities continues to remain suspended, but the Kerala Tourism authorities may resume the same anytime as situation is resuming back to normal and all other sightseeing and other activities are open without any disturbance.

This is a quick update about the landslide in Munnar today.

Please note the Cochin – Munnar road (near Adimalli) and Munnar – Thekkady road have been affected due to land slide this morning. It’s been raining heavily in Kerala for the past 2 days, particularly in hill areas covering Munnar & Thekkady. Roads have been blocked now. Though rescue work has started, continuous rain in these areas (even now it is pouring) hinders the rescue work and the rescue team finds it too difficult to clear the road due to non-stop rain.

We still do not know what are all the areas in Munnar /Thekkady that have got affected. So, we are not sure about the condition of Hotels in Munnar. Hence, we strongly suggest you not to make your clients drive to Munnar or Thekkady today as clients cannot do sightseeing now in Munnar. It is still pouring and this heavy rain would only worsen the road condition further. So let’s hope the rain gives us a break soon, at least for the rescue team to continue their work without any interruption.

We shall keep you posted with update about the road condition then and there.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race: POSTPONED

We shall revert to you as soon as we have an update on this.

I take immense pleasure in sharing with you the treasure of Tamil Nadu - the Kurinji flower.

I am happy that Kerala Government has been promoting this Kurinji flower as Neela Kurinji, in an extensive manner although this blooms only in certain areas of Munnar, Kerala. However I am not sure how many of you are aware of the ethnicity and antiquity of Kurinji flower which is a part of the culture of Tamil Nadu.

KURINJI FLOWER – TREASURE OF TAMILNADU

Out of the five segments of Sangam Landscapes (Kurinji, Mullai, Marudham, Neidhal, Paalai) in Tamil Nadu, Kurinji represents the mountainous regions where the flower Kurinji abundantly blooms. The Queen of Hills, Ootacumund (Ooty) is popularly called as Blue Mountain only because of this flower Kurinji which covers the entire landscape with its purplish blue flowers, transforming the region into totally blue colored.

Blossoming for once in 12 years, Neelakurinji flower is abundantly available in the Shola Forests of the Western Ghats in South India. Although Kurinji is found to blossom in Ooty, Kothagiri, Yelagiri, Yercaud hills & in Munnar, it is seen as a carpet covering the mountain predominantly in Kodaikanal, the Princess of Hill Stations in South India. Though Kurinji is an ordinary looking flower with no fragrance or medicinal properties, when thousands of plants bloom and cover the Shola grasslands of Western Ghats with its purplish blue flowers, it is indeed a spectacular sight.

This year 2018 happens to be the wonderful much awaited year where the blossoming of Kurinji flower has already started in Kodaikanal making the entire mountainous landscape purplish blue, a undoubtedly real feast to the eyes! From July to November, Kodaikanal makes everyone spellbound with the bluish tint everywhere, an event unique to Kodaikanal !!

Kurinji flowers have also started to bloom in the village areas of Denad, Kotagiri which is 40 kms (one way) away from Ooty. Except coaches all other vehicles can access this place. Denad village is surrounded by tea estate and there are no restrictions to visit Kurinji Flowers.

To enjoy the phenomenal beauty of Kurinji flowers, you may suggest a visit to Kodaikanal this season to your guests as otherwise, one need to wait till the year 2030, the next Kurinji season.
