Changes to Canadian Citizenship Act as of October 11, 2017

In accordance with Bill C-6 Amendments, as of October 11, 2017 permanent residents will be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship once they have been in Canada 3 out of 5 years as permanent residents, instead of 4 out of 6 years. Additionally, applicants may count each day they were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person, before becoming a permanent resident, as a half-day toward meeting the physical presence requirement for citizenship, up to a maximum credit of 365 days, within five years preceding the date of application. There are additional changes under the Bill C-6 Amendments.

A temporary resident may also take a program of study up to six months duration without having to obtain a study permit."
