Here are some thoughts about a complicated week in model railway world:

All is not well in toy train world at the start of 2024, or at least that is what you would think from various bits of media coverage and announcements coming out of the UK this January. In a trife…

The last time I worked on 36001 Leader I spent many hours attaching tiny strips of rivets on its body shell. With all the rivets fixed down and primed, it was time to get the final paint coat of shimmery silver onto the model and start taking it closer to my first attempt (but hopefully more stable this time)...

I originally planned for May to be spent tackling the various paint shop jobs that are outstanding, but with May 2021 in the UK being one of the wettest on record it wasn’t very viable to do much of that work. So most paint jobs were put on hold for the month. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but I think there were only two days of the whole month when it didn’t rain in Swindon....

Last night I tackled a much over-thought aspect of my Bass No.9 commission, which was was setting up the pickups from the motor to its wheels. I guess this is where working on larger models and scales makes things really easy, so tackling this on a tiny chassis like the L&Y Pug etch is a little daunting. I wonder how people do this in N and z gauge?...

I’ve been interested in 3D printing for ages and I could see the benefits for model making of having such a device, but a few years back, it was cost prohibitive, with a MakerBot 3D printer back in 2014 being over £1,000. I was also aware that the ‘stepping’ caused by the wiggle of the printer as it moves up its Z axis, meant it wasn’t completely suited to making fine-scale models like locomotives, or figures....

I spend the weekend on my own in the sunshine having a great time building models. I’m quite pleased because I built all the models I intended to make up. I just didn’t get as far on them as I hoped. I hoped I would have painted some, but by the time I had got to the end of Sunday, when I could have got my spray cans out, I thought it better to wait and do it another time rather than rush now....

Recently I rummaged through my Warhammer 'bits box'. For those not familiar with the term, this is the box you gather over time which is full of spare sprue bits, models you never made, and models that people hand to you, when they notice your common interests. Early on in a hobbying life, the concept of the 'bit box' can be quite annoying, as you see other people can randomly say things like ‘oh, I had a whole spare model in my ‘bit box’, but you obviously don’t because all of your model stuff is shiny and new and your bit box is empty....

I have started to write up my adventures in learning the rules for Warhammer 40,000 over on my friend's table top gaming blog, if you fancy a look... I haven’t played Warhammer 40,000 for a really long time. Looking through my notes and photos I can see that my last game was back in 2012, where I fielded by little army of Necrons (ancient robo-skeleton aliens)....

Last night, I had a go at painting my two new psychic models for my Warhammer 40,000 army. I was after a nice bright blue with highlights. I was quite pleased with my previous one from earlier in the week, but he is brighter than I expected, but I came around to really like it. The only thing bothering me, was that I had undercoated him in a dark blue, which I can’t find or recall the make of....
