Sri Lankan cuisine is one of the most complex cuisines of South Asia. Due to its proximity to South India, the cuisine of Sri Lanka shows some influence, yet is in many ways quite distinct. As a major trade hub, it draws influence from colonial powers that were involved in Sri Lanka and by foreign traders. Rice, which is consumed daily, can be found at any occasion, while spicy curries are favorite dishes for lunch and dinner.

Among the Sri Lankan national dishes, spicy crab curry is near the top of the list. A very spicy curry mixture cooked with a variety of different local crab species from blue crabs (the most popular), to spanner crabs or brown crabs. The western seabord town of Chilaw in Sri Lanka is a hotbed for crab curry as it is home to a very popular fish market where many different local and international crab varieties are available.

Just 10 km away, Rekewa's beaches are a well-known breeding ground for Sri Lanka 's 5 species of indigenous marine turtles. The Turtle Conversation Program runs nightly turtle watch program where visitors can watch turtles lay and hatch their eggs during the peak season, from February to July. Mother turtles drag themselves slowly and deliberately up the beach to lay their eggs beyond the reach of the tide. Meanwhile, tiny new hatchlings act on their instincts, and scuttle for their lives across the sand and out to sea.

Turtle watching in Sri Lanka

Five out of the seven species of sea Turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka , making it an ideal country to go Turtle Watching. Turtles are very nervous when they are looking for a place to nest and can therefore be easily scared.

The Turtle can only be approached when she starts laying the eggs because by then she is engaged in a very mechanical, almost trance-like behavior and it is unlikely for her to be frightened by spectators.

This activity involves some waiting and some walking on the beach because as with all of nature, it is the Turtle (not us) that sets the time and place of the event! The whole process of a nesting Turtle can take up to 3 hours and can include ‘false crawls' (non-nesting emergence). Of course there is no guarantee that the Turtles come to nest every night, but sitting on a deserted beach under the open starry sky in Sri Lanka is an incredible experience in itself
