Mermaids - surfing weekend for women

Mermaids - surfing weekend for women

Hi Ladies

Once again we will be running our annual women’s surfing weekend in Lahinch, Co Clare. The 2014 Mermaids Women’s Surfing Weekend will take place on the 14/ 15 June. The weekend aims to provide women of any age with an opportunity to learn to surf or to improve their surfing with a team of women surf instructors. Activities planned include surfing lessons and coaching, presentations on surfing, fitness, nutrition, classes in exercise & fitness, yoga, laugher yoga, belly dancing and much more! If you would like to help with the planning and running of this event contact

We are planning to hit the East coast this year with a Women’s Stand Up Paddle weekend. This event will take place in Dún Laoghaire at the National Yacht Club on the 10/11 May. It will be similar to the Mermaids weekend, any women will be able to come along and try Stand Up Paddle, all equipment and women’s instructors provided.

If you are available to help with the surfing or stand up paddle weekend, or both, please let me know. We particularly need female surf instructors and any other volunteers available. If you can share this email with other women who would be interested in help or participating or with any media contacts you have, it would be much appreciated.

Hope to see you at one or both weekends.

Regards

A Mighty Girl

13-year-old Mighty Girl Olive Bowers of Melbourne, Australia wrote an incredible letter calling out the Australian surfing magazine Tracks, which bills itself as "the surfers' bible," for its sexist representation of female surfers: "I want to bluntly address the way you represent women in your magazine. I am a surfer, my dad surfs and my brother has just started surfing. Reading a Tracks magazine I found at my friend's holiday house, the only photo of a woman I could find was 'Girl of the month'. She wasn't surfing or even remotely near a beach. Since then I have seen some footage of Stephanie Gilmore surfing on your website, but that's barely a start.

I clicked on your web page titled 'Girls' hoping I might find some women surfers and what they were up to, but it entered into pages and pages of semi-naked, non-surfing girls. These images create a culture in which boys, men and even girls reading your magazine will think that all girls are valued for is their appearance. My posse of female surfers and I are going to spread the word and refuse to purchase or promote Tracks magazine. It's a shame that you can't see the benefits of an inclusive surf culture that in fact, would add a whole lot of numbers to your subscription list.

I urge you to give much more coverage to the exciting women surfers out there, not just sc****ly clad women (who may be great on the waves, but we'll never know). I would subscribe to your magazine if only I felt that women were valued as athletes instead of dolls. This change would only bring good. - Olive"

Kudos to Olive for her astute observations and advocacy! We hope that TRACKS MAGAZINE and other sports magazines will listen to her thoughtful advice and feature more women athletes in their publications.
