Viking Christmas: The Roots of "Jul" 🎄

The Vikings' Yule, or "Jul," celebrated the winter solstice with 12 days of feasting, drinking, and honoring gods and spirits. They decorated trees to call forest spirits, burned Yule logs carved with runes for luck, and left treats for Odin’s eight-legged horse—sound like Santa?

Traditions like the Yule goat, mistletoe (symbolizing hope), and "Old Man Winter" dressed in fur inspired the Christmas we know today. Even the northern lights were seen as Bifrost, the bridge between worlds.

Wondering what Norwegians eat at Christmas? Lutefisk! A traditional dish made from dried whitefish, usually cod 🐟.

The preparation is truly a labor of dedication and care:

1️⃣ Soaked in cold water for six days (with regular changes)

2️⃣ Treated with lye for two days to create its jelly-like texture

3️⃣ Soaked again for 4–6 days to make it edible

It’s then cooked and served with boiled potatoes 🥔, peas, melted butter 🧈, and crispy bacon 🥓. A must-try, especially during Norwegian Christmas celebrations—which are just around the corner!🎄✨

Our best known products are Fjord Pass® - Norway’s most extensive hotel discount pass, and Norway in a nutshell® - Norway’s most popular round trip. We have tours that take in some of the most popular tourist attractions in Norway. On our various ‘Explore the fjords’ round trips, you can combine a relaxing train journey with a bus and boat trip in beautiful fjord and mountain scenery. The round trips are based on public transport such as trains, boats and buses, and we endeavour to ensure that they correspond in our timetables. There are no Fjord Tours guides/tour managers on the tours, which are primarily designed for people travelling on their own, although we can also organise customised tours for groups on request.
