Shawn Cowles
As a diver Shawn dove on many wrecks including the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and it's sister ship the Santa Margarita. He worked for the Mel Fisher Organization for over 20 years and helped in the recovery of many priceless artifacts from the 1622 fleet. In 1995 Shawn joined the US Deep Wreck Diving team, lead by Billy Deans, exploring the ocean bottom at depths of up to 350', using mixed gas and closed circuit technology.
Shawn travels extensively giving presentations on historic shipwreck salvage and the discovery of the world’s richest Spanish Galleon ever recovered, the Nuestra Senora de’ Atocha. The Atocha’s main Pile or “motherlode” was found in 1985 after a grueling 16 year search during which Mel lost his son, daughter-in-law and 3 crewmembers. The company went bankrupt 5 times and through it all Mel never gave up on his dream of finding the now world-famous ship wreck. The artifacts that have been recovered so far are valued at over half a billion dollars.
Shawn speaks fondly of his mentor, Mel Fisher who began each day by saying “Today’s the Day”. Shawn carries on the lessons he learned from Mel's patience and perseverance and instills these lessons in his family and everyone he encounters.
