Of Revolt

Of Revolt Traveling and blogging about my (mis)adventures! Of Revolt is a travel blog that aims to encourage people to travel the world. It's about sharing, okay?

Started in February 2011, it chronicles the (mis)adventures of a native New Yorker as she encounters foreign cultures and strange experiences. Since she thinks you probably already know how to pack your own suitcases, Of Revolt (i.e. Jessica Kulick) prefers to write with a decidedly more literary and philosophical spin. Come along with her as she sniffs books, hikes onto destroyed government prope

rty, and watches the occasional knife-fight go down.

🧿 Self Portrait 🧿

Two weeks ago, I turned 39 years old. 🎂 Considering it’s still Pisces season for another 8 days, I thought I’d share my birthday reflections with you: just some of what I’ve learned and observed about Life so far.

I wrote “39 Lessons for 39 Years,” and this is a little taste—you can read the full article (with all 39 lessons) at the link in my bio & Stories. 🔗

In every position I’ve held throughout my career, I’ve managed people.

With Gen Z filling in the ranks, I wanted to share what I’ve found about collaborating with, managing, and working alongside this cohort, especially when it comes to having them on your marketing team — take a look at the 🔗 link in bio 👆🏼

Natalie Louise, you are an earth angel. I adore your deep belly laugh, full face puppy kisses, the way you are so incredibly deft with your hands, and how you chase your big sister around. You are curious, motivated, beautiful inside & out, and yes, sweeter than chocolate. I love you forever my perfect baby. 🎀

In my era. 💋

For the last few months (years?), I’ve been spending most of my time here hanging out in Stories, or just, you know, generally lurking. 👀 😂

I’ve done social media detoxes for months at a time, and the truth is that I actually really like it here. I love staying connected to my dear friends who live across the country; I like seeing what my former colleagues are up to and reminiscing about old jokes; it’s fun to see what’s happening in industries that endlessly fascinate me, like art, fashion, finance, health & wellness, food, and travel. Now, this is not to the exclusion of what’s right in front of me (usually my kids, ha), but a valuable addition.

Social media been part of my professional life since the beginning, when I was backpacking across Europe and making a living as a travel blogger. These days I’m playing with A.I. (like the scenery here) and envisioning the next phase of my career as a creator and teacher across multiple mediums.

Anyway, I am always, always wishing all of you well and sending prayers for your prosperity. Please feel free to send me recommendations for your all time favorite mob movie for my weekend watching. I’m a Goodfellas girl myself. 😘

We were sitting at the dinner table when it happened. My 2.5 year old daughter announced, “I love myself!”

It could’ve gone unnoticed. Vin and I were deep in conversation about some logistics or another, and Serena is prone to talking and singing to herself.

But I caught it. And I told her that it made me so happy that she loves herself, that she is very lovable, that I love her so much, and that I love myself, too. Then the conversation carried on in other directions and no more was said on that topic.

I thought about this later. About how so many children grow up with endless criticism in their ears, with a lack of approval from the people who are supposed to appreciate them most, and how they turn into anxious adults seeking validation outside of themselves.

And it made me realize that this is not my daughter’s fate. I am only too aware that my words become her internal programming, and her programming is confidence and self-love.

I know I’m still only at the beginning. But I think I’m really fu***ng nailing this whole thing so far. 💁🏻‍♀️

Feel free to leave some roses for yourself, too — I want to hear what you’re getting right lately. 🌹

Today is an extra special Mother’s Day because it’s the first time I’m a mom of two. We welcomed Natalie Louise into the world on April 8th, and it has been such a joy getting to know our bright, beautiful little angel. I feel so blessed and grateful to be mama to this sweet, easygoing girl. 💗

Sending love to all of the mothers today, and all those who do the work of mothering. 🌸

It’s Day 14 of . We did it! 🥇🏆

I am so happy that so many of you reached out to share how much you’re loving the meditations and yoga videos, and just how necessary this challenge was for you. It was for me, too! This came at the perfect time for all of us, it seems. I love the fall for that very reason: back to school season just feels like the perfect time to begin, and begin again. ♾️

These last two weeks have been really powerful for me: reconnecting with all of you about something I love has infused my own practice with so much more oomph and vigor. It also really brought me back to my roots, as a student, as a teacher, and as someone who has been creating and publishing content online for 10+ years (!!!).

Thank you all so much for joining me here and on YouTube. I have more to share later this fall. In the meantime, be good to yourselves, and each other. Sending love 🖤🤍

It’s Day 13 of . We’re almost done!

Since Day 8, we’ve upped the ante from 10 to 15 minutes of daily meditation. Today’s meditation is all about visualization. We’ll take this technique literally, using sensory cues to recall a memory and a place when we felt calm and at peace. 🦋

I hope you enjoy!

It’s Day 12 of and I almost missed it because of technology problems. But I’m here and so are your videos.

Unlike yesterday, I’m not feeling particularly verbose this evening. As my dear friend and teacher taught me long ago, the yoga is enough. You don’t need to fill the air with stories and philosophy and truth bombs all the time. In fact, it’s better if you don’t.

So here is a snippet of my personal practice lately. I hope you find the time to move & meditate today. It will almost certainly make your day better, even if it’s already good.

Sending love. 💓

Welcome to Day 11 of . I’ve chosen this ancient relic of a photo (the graininess! The shadows! The complete lack of “set design”!) to share with you just how long I’ve been practicing yoga.

The first time I tried yoga was circa 2009 — I’d just moved to Fort Green, BK into a tiny studio that had a fire escape off the apartment’s singular window that I used to climb out on to smoke ci******es, wearing a secondhand fur coat and pretending I was Margot Tenenbaum. I decided that maybe yoga was something I could do for exercise and there was a studio within walking distance. So one evening I went…and I HATED it. It was smelly, it was dark, it was too slow, and it was not what I considered a workout. I went back to my normal “fitness routine” of ci******es, coffee, and $1 utility pizza and walking everywhere because I was broke. 🍕☕️🚬

I didn’t try yoga again until 2012, when I was looking for some way to shed some of the beer and bratwurst weight I’d picked up after traveling and couchsurfing through Europe for a year. I fell in love with a power vinyasa practice that made my muscles quake and awaken in ways that my dance background never had. Within a month or two, I was signed up for teacher training and the rest is history.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that I’ve been practicing and teaching yoga for 10 years. This photo is from 2013 — after a year of trying, not only could I do a headstand, but also fold my legs into lotus. This particular shape is now so ingrained into my body that I can do it at any time of day or night, whether I’ve warmed up or had my coffee or am wearing the “right” clothes. Other shapes are just not as interesting to me and the body I’ve lived in for the past few pandemic years, and have fallen out of my practice (see: locust scorpion). 🦂

After a decade of practice, I still find yoga to be the best container for both my love of movement and spirituality. It doesn’t need to be both for you in order to reap the benefits. You can do yoga to reduce anxiety, to relieve pain, to strengthen and build flexibility in your body. The “why” you practice is almost besides the point: all that matters is that you try.

Day 10 of has arrived! We’re closing in on the end now…can you feel it? I feel like we just hit that place where we’ve passed the edge of fatigue and found an extra burst of energy to make it across the finish line — or is that just me? 😅

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite meditations, on witnessing ourselves and our thoughts. I’ve never truly identified with my own thoughts. Even as a child I had an awareness of myself as the Seer of my thoughts. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been reactive or acted purely out of instinct in the past (sometimes to my own detriment!), but it has always given me a little bit of distance from myself, which I think is healthy when practiced in a safe container like meditation. (Not so healthy when it’s used for dissociation 🥴.)

I hope you enjoy it. for the latest 15-min video. And I love hearing your feedback — please keep commenting on my YouTube videos or sharing your thoughts here or in my DMs. Love y’all, and happy Friday! ❤️

Day 9 of is inspired by my toddler, who wishes me a “Happy birthday” almost every day. 😹🎈

While it most certainly is not my birthday every single day, she has a point. Every day is a chance to be born, and reborn. A chance to begin, and begin again.

It reminds me of a passage from Be Here Now by — he writes: “You cannot rip the skin off the snake. The snake must molt the skin. That’s the rate it happens.” 🐍

I hope you enjoy today’s 15 minute meditation on rebirth and renewal. for the YouTube video 👆

Day 8…a day late! 😂😭

I’m so sorry for my tardiness, but technological glitches got the better of me yesterday. Luckily, I was able to get not one, not two, but THREE new meditations up on YouTube! It’s especially exciting because for the remainder of our challenge, we’re upping the ante from 10 to 15 mins of meditation every day.

These latest meditations are very personal & meaningful for me, so I hope they land powerfully for you too.

Today’s meditation is inspired by this incredible piece of art by Jana Sterback. “These mountains that you’re carrying, you were only supposed to climb.” 🧗‍♀️

It’s Day 7️⃣ of Get Your Sit Together.

It’s our last day of 10-minute practices: tomorrow we’ll start to stretch our capacities a bit. Just like yesterday, do 10 minutes of yoga and 10 minutes of meditation — but with a bonus challenge to add in a nighttime writing practice. You don’t need to write a novel, even your to-do list is fine. The idea is to get your thoughts, feelings, and whatever else down on paper before sleep so that you go to bed feeling empty and clear. It’s a good recipe for a truly refreshing sleep.

Two new “yoga snacks” are up on my YouTube channel. to practice with me!☝🏼

Liberation is my only goal. 🕊

It’s Day 6 of Get Your Sit Together.

How is the challenge going for you guys? I’ve heard from a couple of folks that you’re “behind,” but let me assure you: you’re right on time. It takes a while to build new habits — or break old ones — so if the road has been bumpy, you’re in good company.

Rather than release new meditations & yoga practices today, I want to give you all a little extra time to catch up — there are 5 meditations and 3 “yoga snacks” to choose from on my YouTube channel, so feel free to do one of each today that you already tried & liked, or give a new one a whirl. 🧘🏻‍♀️

Today’s bonus challenge is to remove one of your vices: just for the day. For example, if you smoke ci******es, see if you can quit for a day. Addicted to that evening cocktail? What if you have a cup of tea instead? 🍵 I think removing the crutches we lean on for numbing — even briefly— is one of the most powerful practices we can engage in.

I also wanted to share WHY I do these practices. For me, spiritual liberation is the only goal. All the other stuff — mental clarity, stress relief, physical fitness — are just positive benefits on the way towards (dare I say it?) enlightenment. 💡

In yogic tradition, enlightenment is when all layers of ego have been subdued by the “sadhaka,” or spiritual seeker. At that point, the sadhaka becomes one with Atman: their essential self (a.k.a. soul). And, upon death, the sadhaka is released from the cycle of rebirth. ♾️

That’s not to say that their external circumstances change dramatically — as the old joke goes, “Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.” But there’s something to be said for true release: from the cycles of death & rebirth, from suffering, from attachment. ⛓

18/08/2022

Serena & I were playing on the lawn this evening, enjoying the last bit of sunshine before it would be time for bath and bed (for her, at least). A boy on his bike passed by, and I could hear him openly weeping. I couldn’t help but call out to him and ask if he was okay.

He stopped his bike and wiped his face with his hands and said to me with tears in his eyes that his knees hurt. His eyes were big and blue and he did his best to muster up a brave half-smile, even though he couldn’t have been more than 10 years old. I told him my name and introduced Serena too, and said it was nice to meet him. Then I asked if he’d fallen and he said no, and I asked if he wanted an ice pack and he said no, and I asked if he wanted some water and he agreed to that.

Then I scooped up Serena, told him to wait on the lawn, and went inside to fetch a glass of water. I brought it to him and he gulped most of it down and told me that he was going to call his brother — I’d seen three other boys pass by on bikes and he said that was them. So I busied myself with Serena and some gardening while he called, to give him some privacy since he was clearly a bit embarrassed by the whole ordeal.

His brother shouted, “Where are you?!” into the phone, loud enough that I could hear it. The boy said that he was getting some water, and the brother was skeptical: “From who?!” The boy hesitated, then said that he got the water from a mom.

In that moment, I was so touched. He was willing to accept help from a mom. He knew that I was a safe person.

I waited awhile outside until he caught sight of his brother and peddled away on his bike. And I thought, this is the work of mothers everywhere: to be a safe haven, a place where the future can rest awhile and be briefly protected, before marching forward through time.

I think this every time I tend my garden.

At least, I think that as I peel a bit of my own

This is pruning.
