Dambusters - 'Goner 58A', by Robert Taylor - RAF Lancaster Aviation Art (https://aviationartplus.com/dambusters-goner-58a-by-robert-taylor-raf-lancaster-aviation-art/)

The story of RAF Bomber Command’s audacious attack on the great dams of western Germany continues to inspire long after the events that took place on the night of 16 / 17 May 1943 – and with good reason. Few wartime missions have replicated the skill, courage and bravery demonstrated that night and the Dambusters have rightly gained legendary status.
Codenamed Operation Chastise, the mission was to be carried out by 617 Squadron, a newly-formed unit established for the sole purpose of destroying primarily the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams in the Ruhr valley. The resulting flooding to the factories, roads, railways and canals of the Ruhr, and subsequent disruption of hydro-electric power, would be immense.

Robert Taylor’s skill and artistry reflects his intimate and authentic knowledge of the events that took place on that epic, moonlit night in May 1943. Over the past four decades he has enjoyed the company of almost every man to survive Operation Chastise, has listened to their stories first-hand, and counted many of them as friends. The knowledge acquired, and the friendships gained have, without doubt, given Robert an unparalleled insight into the legendary Dambusters.

The weather on the morning of 31 December, 1944 was already unpleasant. In the Ardennes, hard-pressed German troops were battling Allied ground forces advancing through several inches of snow. Above, darkening skies heralded the arrival of more snow. At 10:45 am, in deteriorating weather, a battle formation of 30 Fw190D fighters climbed out of Varrelbusch and headed south over the snowcovered landscape. Under the command of 12./JG54 Staffelkapitan, Oblt. Hans Dortenmann, and initially tasked to provide air cover to their beleaguered comrades below, the group was re-assigned to intercept enemy aircraft in the region of Limburg almost immediately after the pilots were airborne. Flying south they ran directly into the oncoming weather, and with visibility dangerously reduced, Dortenmann elected to climb through the solid cloud into clear air. As the Fw190s broke cloud above the area of Koblenz they sighted a formation of nine 2nd Air Division B-24 Liberators and formed up for an attack. Some 6,000 feet above, top-cover P-51 Mustangs had watched the Fw190s climbing through the banks of clouds, and turned 180 degrees to position behind the Luftwaffe fighters. Diving in from their height advantage, the Mustang pilots entered the fray and within seconds the sky was filled with swirling dogfights.

The Road to the Rhine, by Robert Taylor (https://aviationartplus.com/the-road-to-the-rhine-by-robert-taylor/)

On Sunday 17 September 1944, the first day of Operation Market Garden, C-47 Dakotas of the 439th Troop Carrier Group dropped thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions into Holland, a hundred and fifty miles behind enemy lines. This daring operation, the largest airborne assault of World War II, aimed to capture and secure vital bridges in the Allies' push towards the Rhine.
This outstanding new piece is the long awaited follow-up to Taylor's concept drawing released in August, 2008. The edition is personally signed by veterans of the 506th P.I.R, 101st Airborne that fought throughout the Allied Liberation of Europe.

Water Ops, by Dru Blair (https://aviationartplus.com/water-ops-by-dru-blair/)

The CH-47 Chinook has proven time and time again, to be an indispensable tool of mobility for the US Army. It is a powerful helicopter, capable of great speed and surprising agility, and one of its capabilities is water operations. The Chinook can not only take off and land in water, it actually floats.
In "Water Ops," by artist Dru Blair, the Chinook is depicted skimming across a lake at high speed during an insertion. The tremendous forces at work are evident by the spray careening vertically and forward off the front gear.

First American Ace, by Roy Grinnell (https://aviationartplus.com/first-american-ace-by-roy-grinnell/)

During May, 1916, Raoul Gervais Lufbery was assigned to N-124, the Escadrille Americaine (the American Pilot's Volunteer Group). Everyone marveled at Raoul's skill to keep his Nieuport 11 in top shape. His earlier experience as a mechanic had paid off. His flying skills became famous for inventing the so called "Lufbery Circle". Lufbery's well-remembered phrase was "Be careful, always remember it may be a trap."

Of Lufbery's 16 victories, it is believed that his fifth was the most notable, during the famous "Oberndorf Raid" over Germany, 12 October, 1916. Four pilots from N-124, flying Nieuport 17's, were to es**rt the bomber mission to Oberndorf to destroy the Ma**er Works factory there. On the return from the mission es**rt, Lufbery scored his fifth victory against a Roland CII. It's best described by James R. McConnell of the Escadrille Americaine, in his book "Flying For France", copyrighted in 1916. Here is a quote from the book:

"The Nieuports having refilled their tanks went back up to clear the air of Germans that might be hovering in wait for the returning raiders. Prince found one and promptly shot it down, Lufbery came upon three. He dove for one, making it drop below the others, and then forcing a second to descend, attacked the one remaining above. The combat was short and at the end of it, the German tumbled to earth. This made the fifth enemy machine which was officially credited to Lufbery."

Raoul Lufbery's life ended on 19 May, 1918 in a tragic combat death. Lufbery is enshrined and honored along with 200 other American Volunteers of the Escadrille Lafayette, in a beautiful park at Villeneuve L'Etang outside Paris, near Versailles. It is called the Memorial de l'Escardille Lafayette." The painting has been reviewed and approved by the family of Raoul Lufbery.

Sacred Mount Fuji seems to stand with these patrolling Zero fighters to protect the homeland. For centuries the Japanese worked to shield their culture from unnecessary and unwanted foreign influence. With their role shifted from conqueror to defender, these zero pilots face what seems an uncertain future. In the Summer of 1945 Wotakeo Tanimizu, an experienced combat pilot and ace with some eighteen victories, leads a flight of A6M52C Zeros from Kagoshima Air Base on a home defense mission.

Shooter's Odds, by Ross Buckland (https://aviationartplus.com/shooters-odds-by-ross-buckland/)

With talk of an armistice only weeks away, F-86 Sabre Pilot Ralph Parr was afraid that the Korean War would be over before he would get into air combat. Flying a routine patrol over the Yalu, Parr spotted a glint of light low against the ground and suspected enemy aircraft. Rolling into a Split-S, Parr dove his F-86F down from 41,000 feet and closed rapidly on the suspicious image. Soon, he saw four MiG-15s right in front of him, but a quick look left and right revealed that there was really a total of 16 enemy aircraft. Not one to miss an opportunity, Parr engaged the closest aircraft and was immediately in a boiling dogfight right on the deck.
After destroying two MiGs and damaging another, the remaining aircraft fled for the North. Ralph Parr finished the Korean War a double ace, shooting down ten enemy aircraft in just 30 missions over five weeks.

Lt. Robin Olds and his wingman, Lt. Harold F. "Bud" Grenning, roar over beachhead bluffs in a turn back out to sea. Flying air cover in their P-38 Lightning for the Allied Fleet and D-Day invasion force, pilots of the 434th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group, were to protect the sea and beaches from Luftwaffe attacks. Flying through the intense exchange of Allied and German ground fire, the pilots passed over waves of landing craft and the deadly chaos of the invasion beaches. They had front row seats to an incredible panorama of destruction.

With his P-51 glued to the tail of an evading Me 109, Col. "Bud" Anderson pressed his attack and closed for the kill Hedgehopping at very low altitude sometimes gives a trapped pilot the chance to shake off pursuit. Not this time. “As I closed in to fire, he must have looked back,” recollects Anderson” and inadvertently shoved forward maybe an inch on the stick. At that height and speed, an inch would have been more than enough. The Messerschmitt simply flew into the ground at full power and blew up like a bomb.”

In probably the most critical test of the as yet untried Space Shuttle, the orbiter "Enterprise" is released from its highly modified 747 carrier aircraft for its approach and landing test in actual flight configuration. Without the streamlined tailcone used on previous test flights, there would be increased buffeting on the 747 shuttle carrier and the descent profile for the orbiter would be much steeper. At 20,300 feet, shuttle pilot Joe Engle released the orbiter from the carrier aircraft and NASA 747 pilot Fitz Fulton banked the Jumbo steeply away from the orbiter. Previous tests with the tailcone installed had required 5 1/2 minutes for the orbiter to reach the Edwards runway, but today that descent took only 2 minutes and 34 seconds.

High above the USS Lexington, on 20 February, 1942

On Febuary 1942, the enemy at Rabaul was determined to locate and sink the U.S. Carrier Lexington and Japanese G4M1 Bettys set out with that end in sight. Alerted to the coming fight, six F4F Wildcats landed on the ''Lady Lex'' to refuel and rearm and six others took to the skies to rid the carrier deck of fully fueled and armed aircraft and to engage the attacking bombers. The fight was bitter.

When a second wave of enemy bombers appeared, only two aircraft, F4F-3s flown by Lieutenant Edward H. "Butch" O'Hare and Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Marion Dufilho, were between the attackers and the carrier they protected. Dufilho's machine guns froze but O'Hare dove on the eight bombers and downed four; then he aimed at taking out the master bombardier and interrupting the bomb run.
O'Hare was credited as an ace, having dropped five in one skirmish. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and promoted two grades. Unfortunately, O'Hare was killed in action during a night intercept mission in the assaults on the Gilbert Islands in 1943, apparently the victim of "friendly fire".

Colonel Giora "Hawkeye" Epstein is the top scoring IAF fighter ace with 17 victories, 16 against Egyptian jets, making Epstein the ace of aces of supersonic fighter jets and of the Israeli Air Force. Epstein was an active IAF pilot from 1963 until 1997, when he retired at age 59. He, like many retired IAF flyers, later worked as captain for El-Al Airlines.
Epstein's first kill came on June 6, 1967 during the Six-Day War, when he downed an Egyptian Sukhoi-7 at El Arish. During the War of Attrition in 1969–70, Epstein downed a MiG-17, another Sukhoi-7 and two MiG 21s. The rest of his kills came during 1973's Yom Kippur War.
Between October 18 and 20, 1973, he downed an Mi-8 helicopter and eight jets: two Sukhoi-7s, two Sukhoi-20s and four MiG 21s. Then, on October 24, 1973, Epstein downed three more MiG-21s west of the Great Bitter Lake. Eight of these victories were with the French-built Mirage III, a delta wing fighter designed primarily as a high altitude interceptor.
His other nine victories came in an IAI Nesher, an Israeli-built version of the Mirage 5. Five of his claims were downed using air-to-air missiles, the rest with cannon.
After the Yom Kippur War, Epstein received the Medal of Distinguished Service, one of Israel's highest military honors. He went on to command Mirage and Kfir squadrons and was flying "ready" missions in the F-16 up until his 60th birthday. After retiring from the IAF, Epstein became a captain for El-Al Airlines.

Triple Play – signed by Herman E. Ernst, by Roy Grinnell P-61 Aviation Art (https://aviationartplus.com/triple-play-herman-e-ernst-by-roy-grinnell/)

First delivered in May 1944, the twin-engine Northrup P-61 was the first USAAF aircraft to be specifically designed as a night-fighter. Appearing as it did late in the war, only four P-61 pilots achieved ace status, three in the ETO and one in the Pacific Theater. 1st Lt. Herman E. Ernst, assigned to the 422nd Night Fighter Squadron, became an ace in the predawn of 2 March 1945, when he executed a "triple play". Teamed with his radar observer, 1st Lt. Edward H. Kopsel, Ernst lifted his big fighter off the runway of strip A-78 in Belgium at 0348 hours and contacted the "Nuthouse" ground control.
Directed by "Nuthouse", Ernst closed 400 feet on a Me-110. Opening fire, he scored several hits on the fuselage and the '110 snapped violently to the right. Almost immediately Ernst and Kopsel were vectored to a second target, which proved to be a Ju-87 Stuka dive-bomber. Closing to 500 feet, Ernst opened up with the four belly-mouthed 20mm cannon and the Stuka went straight down into the ground. Three minutes later "Nuthouse" called out a third target. Kopsel picked it up on his airborne radar at 2 1/2 miles and guided Ernst in until he made a visual sighting of another Ju-87, 1,000 feet dead ahead. Ernst later responded, "I fired two three second bursts at a slight deflection. Eddie and I both saw strikes on the on the wings and fuselage, whereupon the enemy aircraft started to fall very rapidly in what happened to be a fairly wide, flat spin. A short time later, Eddie observed a large flash on the ground... We claimed this Ju-87 destroyed, and the victory credit was awarded. We were aces."

Jet Age Dogfight, by Mark Karvon (https://aviationartplus.com/jet-age-dogfight-by-mark-karvon/)

After World War II the development of jet engine technology and advances in aerodynamics revolutionized the aircraft industry. When war broke out in Korea, the Russian built MiG 15 proved a major shock to American forces. Fortunately, the F-86 Sabre proved up to the task of taking on the advanced Russian machine. Armed with 6 .50 caliber machine guns, the F-86 dueled with the MiG in aerial combat. Though relatively equal aircraft, better pilot training and tactics gave the edge to the Sabre and it finished the war with an impressive 10:1 kill ratio in favor of the Sabre. There was no doubt, the jet age had arrived and forever changed the nature of aerial combat.
