What advice do you typically share with new hires on their first day at your organization?

There’s a saying: An opportunity sustains an enterprise for a year; good management sustains an enterprise for a decade; good corporate culture sustains an enterprise for a century. A company intent on long-term development needs executives who can fully understand and pass along its corporate culture to other employees. I share my viewpoints with every senior executive I work with every day. Below are the seven features I think qualified executives should have while working at Fosun.Entrepreneur SpiritWe hire talent not for doing what they’re told, but for

What do you personally think of networking events? Helpful, or intimidating....

I recently attending what would traditionally be called a networking event. It was a event put on by a non-profit focused on women in a particular industry where somewhere around 125+ people attended. So it was large enough that you wouldnt know everyone. In fact, I didnt know anyone. And, I went alone. Now, would I have liked to bring a friend along? Sure. It is always fun to go to things with friends and certainly in a place where I knew no one, it would have been a great security blanket. But, heres the thing - had I brought a friend

How often does your organization hire independent contract employees?

On July 15, 2015, the U.S. Department of Labor issued an interpretive memorandum stating its view that an increasing number of workplaces are misclassifying employees as independent contractors. Calling this a problematic trend, the DOL issued its memorandum to provide additional guidance to employers. The standard of whether a worker is “employed” under the Fair Labor Standards Act is determined in part by the “economic realities” test, which focuses on whether a worker is economically dependent on the employer or in business for him or herself.

What is your advice to managers to motivate a team without micromanaging?

Most managers want to motivate people to peak performance, but their approach often backfires. In their fervent desire to teach people what they know to be true (after all, it worked to get them promoted to management, right?), some managers enthusiastically over-manage.Over-management can manifest as micromanagement. When you tell staffers what to do, how to do it, when to do it and why your way is better, you undermine their ability to think for themselves. Instead of enjoying some control over the way they work, they begin to feel powerless and controlled. They many even start to doubt the

Interesting idea: prevent exit interviews by offering stay interviews. Would you try something like this?

We haven’t thought about them for a while, but stay interviews might be making a comeback. They’re defined as structured interviews designed to learn the reasons that employees stay with a company or the conditions that might cause them to leave. As the talent wars continue, stay interviews can be a valuable way to engage

Successful people share a lot of similar qualities, like discipline and drive. What quality do you tend to notice in the most successful people around you?

Anyone can succeed without capital, without a business plan, without a mentor, and even without a great idea. But no one can succeed without one essential ingredient. There is one trait every successful person possesses:Irrational optimism. Why? To be successful you must embrace belief, which means pushing aside all those self-doubts: Feeling you arent smart enough, dedicated enough, adaptable enough, or simply that, in spite of your best intentions and best efforts, you wont succeed.Often other people make it even harder to maintain that belief. Family and friends tend to shoot multiple

Being old is generally seen as a bad thing in American culture. But I want to interview more older women. And when I say older I dont mean 55 or 65. I mean 80 or 85 or 95. I mean bona fide old ladies. Women whove lived long lives, made mistakes, had successes, had families or not had families, and who are willing to talk about all of it. Women who might be described as badass.I spoke to former Vermont governor Madeleine Kunin recently for my podcast on women and work, The Broad Experience. Shes 81 and still working part-time. Do you have hiring peak times? Does summer slow down for you?

As the weather gets warmer, the sunshine gets longer and the days grow long, we believe employment cycles slow down... Is this an urban myth or the truth? We do believe many managers start taking their vacations in the summer (it is high season after all) and recruiters and candidates cant seem to get any responses. What should we do? Give up? Wait till September when all the managers are back to work... Im sorry to say that I believe that the Summer slow-down is an urban myth. In the 10+ years of recruiting, the volume of recruits have been steady. Although summer time is when most o

Interesting concept: giving interview questions to the candidates ahead of time. Would you try it?

Why?It’s not the 1950’s (or 60’, 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s). Our candidates expect more from the interview. The traditional interview doesn’t have the same impact as it once had. Candidates know they have a choice. They don’t feel the need to beg for a job and companies know that hiring mistakes are costly. Job seekers want to know what they are

This is something a lot of HR Managers struggle with. How do you find the balance between criticism and feedback?

It’s easy to assume that pointing out a mistake constitutes as feedback, and to an extent it does, but that’s similar to telling your partner it’s raining outside and not handing them an umbrella. Feedback is instructive language that positively influences behavior. It has an assumed intrinsic benefit: it provides knowledge on how to improve what we do and how we do it. It helps us grow and become better.
