Travelling Around Australia Travelling and exploring Australia by caravan, camper, motorhome or 4x4? For some, it can seem overwhelming, scary or even impossible.

Places to see, campsites to visit, c/van parks to stay and nifty products to make your camping and travel adventure more enjoyable. To travel around Australia.... its something that so many people dream of doing, but unfortunately so few people actually set aside to some time to do it. Whether its by caravan, motorhome, camper trailer, 4x4 or tent- Everyone should try to set aside a bit of time to

explore our own big backyard. Even its only for a few months!! Explore it....Experience it....Enjoy it! Pack up your house, leave your 'comfortable and familiar' life behind and hit the highways to discover new places and venture the remote (an not so remote) corners of this great country.

📍 Day 44 – Home Stretch

Just 600km to go until we’re home. Bittersweet vibes! We’re excited for the comforts of home—our own beds, endless showers, and all the little things we’ve missed.

What an incredible trip to Tassie! A huge shoutout to the Conroys for making it even more special.

Plus a massive thanks to Craig for safely getting us through an epic 9000km journey. 🚗💨

Now it’s back to reality & work tomorrow… but already planning the next adventure!

✅ 9,000km DONE! 🌏✨

💛 Thank you for following along and being part of the journey. We’ve loved your questions, tips, and interactions—it’s made sharing this adventure so much more meaningful.

📍 Day 41: Kyneton → Narrandera

After a late night catching up with Mel and Tim, we had a slower start to the day. Even so, we powered through 400 km and made it to Narrandera for the night.

Not used to these high temps after six weeks in Tassie, so driving until after 7pm was worth it for the air con—it was still 33°C at 6pm! 🚗☀️

📍Day 40 - Spirit of Tasmania 🚢🏞️

🏡 Homeward Bound 😢

The alarm went off at 4am for our final goodbyes as we began the journey back home. Our Tassie adventure has officially come to an end. We’ve seen so much—more than many locals, apparently! Every moment has been incredible, and we’ve loved it all 💚.

We arrived early at the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, with only about 20 cars ahead of us. But timing didn’t matter—boarding isn’t first in, best dressed! Somehow, we ended up being among the last vans loaded, meaning most spots on the upper decks were already taken. Exhausted after late nights and big adventures, we realised a cabin would’ve been the way to go 😴.

We made it! Back on the mainland and ready to tackle the next leg of our journey—2,000 km to go! 🚗✨ Four days to get home before work starts. The plan: 500 km a day. Let’s do this!

First stop: Kyneton to catch up with the Hay family. Looks like another late night ahead!

📍Day 39 - Last day in Tassie with the Conroys 🦞🐮🎣

Started the day early with my final Tassie walk 🌿. First stop: Lobster Ponds to see the world’s largest freshwater lobster, found only in northern Tasmania 🦞. These giants can grow over 1m long—absolutely incredible!

Nash gave trout fishing one last shot but came up empty-handed 🎣. On the bright side, Rylee was thrilled to spend more time with the adorable Highland cows—always a highlight! 🐮

The day was bittersweet as we said our goodbyes—both to old friends and to the new ones we’ve made along the way.

Until next time, Tassie! 💚✨

📍Day 38 - Dip Falls, The Big Tree & Blue Hill Honey 🌳🍯🎣

The kids were wiped out and not too thrilled about another bushwalk or waterfall mission today (understandable, right?). Plus, Rylee’s head is still sore from the lure mishap 🎣💔, so they stayed back while Craig and I snuck out for one last adventure.

We explored the stunning Dip Falls, admired the incredible Big Tree, and hit up Blue Hill Honey for some tasting. Mission accomplished—we scored their world-famous Leatherwood Honey, crowned “Best Leatherwood Honey in the World 2024”! 🏆🍯

☀️ After a rainy morning, the afternoon cleared up, and the boys decided to give gummy shark fishing one last shot. Let’s just say… things didn’t quite go to plan 🤦‍♂️.

After some drama setting the long line, they finally got it ready. Hours later, they checked it—only to find all the bait gone (those sneaky leatherjackets!). No sharks were caught, but there were plenty of laughs watching the antics unfold from the balcony 🤣🐟.

Not a bad way to wrap up the day! 💛

📍Day 37: Launceston, TAS

Another day of adventure with no set plans—just seeing where Tassie takes us!

After losing 12v power overnight, we stopped at Old Mac’s Farm in Launceston to hook up to power while Craig worked on fixing the issue. It turned out to be a win for everyone: Nash fished in the dam and river, Rylee got to see Highland cows and other farm animals, and I finally made it to Cataract Gorge after our last attempt weeks ago failed due to parking challenges with the van.

💦The warm weather made for a fantastic swim in the gorge, with Nash enjoying jumps off the rocks. We also rode the chairlift, which spans 457m and holds the title of the longest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The day ended with a fishing competition between Nash and Rylee. Nash started strong, leading 25-18 in redfin perch, but Rylee made an epic comeback the next morning, narrowly winning 43-42. Unfortunately, her victory was short-lived when Nash’s double-treble fishing hooks ended up lodged in her scalp—not exactly the triumph she had hoped for!

🏥It wouldn’t be an Atkinson holiday without a trip to Emergency! Luckily, we were only 9 minutes from Launceston Hospital. Removing the hooks was no small feat—three of the six barbs were deeply embedded—but after some local anesthetic, lancing, and a few stitches, Rylee was back to herself.

With that excitement behind us, we made our way to Wynyard for the final stretch of our Tassie adventure before boarding the Spirit of Tasmania early Friday morning. What a day!

📍Day 36: The Great Lakes & Liffey, TAS

We said a bittersweet farewell to the Osbournes after a late night of reminiscing and planning our future trip to see them in Arnhem Land. With our time in Tassie coming to an end, we started the journey north, following the picturesque Highlands lake system through the heart of the state.

Our lunch stop at Tarraleah included a quick walk to admire the waterfalls and check out the massive water pipes powering the region. We’re averaging 10km a day on foot, and Tassie’s ever-changing scenery makes every step worth it.

🐍 However, I had a heart-stopping moment today—a close call with a tiger snake when I stepped off the track to scare Nash, only to accidentally step on its tail! Thankfully, I jumped back just in time to avoid a bite, but it definitely gave me the fright of my life.

We reached the geographic center of Tassie, surrounded by dramatic, rugged landscapes at 1,030m above sea level. Dark storm clouds loomed as we searched for a lakeside campsite for Nash to try his new trout lures. Unfortunately, none of the sites on Wiki were suitable, so we pressed on to Liffey Falls Campground, setting up camp just in time to dodge the rain.

The day ended on a high note as we witnessed a wildlife carer release two hand-raised baby possums back into the wild—such a special moment.

Here’s to more dirt roads, stunning views, and hopefully some trout success tomorrow!

📍Day 35: Hobart & Craigbourne Lake, TAS

We started the day bright and early at the Salamanca Markets—beating the crowds and soaking up the lively atmosphere. On our way to Craigbourne Lake, we made a quick stop in Richmond to pick up trout lures, and when Rylee spotted the Sweet Treats lolly shop, we couldn’t resist stopping for some goodies 🍬🍭.

Our Hipcamp spot was a serene, lakefront retreat. The kids, missing Tilly, quickly bonded with the resident dog, Millie, spending the afternoon playing fetch and enjoying her company.

As soon as we arrived, Nash wasted no time jumping into the kayak to troll for fish. It wasn’t long before he reeled in his first catch: a freshwater redfin. His excitement was off the charts!

The evening was all about camping under the stars and reconnecting with Bretto, Megs, and the girls. This was our first get-together since meeting them on our lap of Oz in 2019, and the night was filled with laughter, storytelling, and fun around the campfire.

By the end of the day, Nash had caught an incredible 16 redfin and couldn’t have been happier. Another adventure ticked off the list, and another day packed with unforgettable memories. 🌟

📍 Day 34: Hobart, TAS

Parked up at the Hobart Showgrounds, ready to explore this beautiful city and the iconic Salamanca Markets tomorrow.

Today’s weather? A perfect 28°C—ideal for some much-needed R&R. We soaked up the sun at Bellerive Beach, where Nash tested the water with his signature move: dunking the top of his head first! The boys braved the chilly water while Rylee and I enjoyed some quiet time on the sand. After weeks of non-stop adventure, a slower pace was just what we needed.

In the afternoon, we explored a peninsula southeast of Hobart, chasing spots for Nash to burn off his boundless energy. We found a jetty at Opossum Bay for him to jump off (mission accomplished!) before finishing the day at a local skate park. Let me tell you—finding swim spots or skate parks in every town is 100% worth it. Long car trips just aren’t his thing, and these little detours make all the difference.

Tomorrow’s plan: Salamanca Markets in the morning and trout fishing on the lake in the afternoon. Nash is crossing his fingers for a trout or salmon—here’s hoping!

📍 Day 33: Tahune Airwalk & Mt Wellington, TAS

Our morning started with a little drama—a loud scraping noise from the driver’s front wheel. After a quick inspection, we found the culprit: a small rock caught in the brakes. With the tyre off and a bit of tinkering, we were back on the road within 30 minutes. Crisis averted!

Today was all about pushing boundaries—especially my fear of heights. The 30-meter-high Tahune Airwalk was a thrilling challenge, but I made it! The final stretch—a 50-meter-high cantilever suspended over the Huon River—was breathtaking (and slightly terrifying). Let’s just say I won’t be seeking out more high-flying adventures anytime soon!

The highlight? The swinging bridges over the Huon River. They offered unique views of the water below and added a fun twist to the 3km walk.

From there, we made our way to the iconic Mt Wellington as we headed closer to Hobart. After parking the van at the Longley Pub campsite, we tackled the winding road to the summit. The views over Hobart were simply magical—no photo could ever do them justice. While the road had its fair share of narrow, nerve-wracking sections, the real challenge was dodging drivers who didn’t seem to believe in sharing the road!

What a day filled with adventure, adrenaline, and unforgettable scenery. Tasmania keeps delivering!

📍 Day 32: Cockle Creek & Esperance River Campsite

Big travel day to the southernmost point of Tasmania! With this stop, we’ve officially ticked off all four extreme points of Australia:

✅ Northern - Cape York
✅ Western - Dirk Hartog Island
✅ Eastern - Cape Byron
✅ Southern - Cockle Creek

The day began with a beach walk and a stumble upon the historic Dog Line at Eaglehawk Neck. Once a military station, this narrow strip of land was guarded by dogs every few meters to prevent convict escapes from Port Arthur—an incredible piece of history!

Next stop: Dunalley, where Craig tried their famous scallop pie (and yes, it absolutely lived up to the hype).

After passing through Hobart, we reached Cockle Creek, only to find it far busier than expected. Packed campsites and a lack of peace and quiet meant our dreamy plans of fishing and relaxing in solitude had to change.

So, we backtracked to a quiet bush camp by a creek—and what a decision that was. With clear skies, and stars overhead, it turned into a cozy, unexpected end to the day.

Not the day we planned, but one we’ll always remember.

❓Scallop Pie or NOT?
❓ Where is the best one?

📍 Day 31: Port Arthur

We set off early to catch the Remarkable Cave at low tide before diving into a full day at Port Arthur. Spent hours wandering through the historic site, soaking in the stories of its past. While it was fascinating, the kids reached their limit with the old buildings—it was a lot to take in!

Next, we went on a mission to find Neil the Seal, a southern elephant seal born in 2020 who has become a local celebrity. Neil’s unusual habit of sunbaking on roads and front lawns keeps everyone on their toes. We just missed him—caught sight of his slide marks heading back to the ocean, about 1.5 hours too late! “Missed it by that much!”

After packing up camp, we moved on to a friend’s place at Eaglehawk Neck for an incredible Greek-style seafood feast. They also showed us the local foreshore highlights, and we were in for a treat—we caught a glimpse of the Aurora from the lookout!

On the way back, two Tasmanian devils dashed across the road. Nash wasn’t too impressed, though—he’s holding out for a proper sighting in the wild. Despite the late hour (past midnight!), it was worth it. Two more bucket list items ticked off! Aurora and wild Tassie Devils ✅✅.

📍 Day 30: Eaglehawk Neck 🦅

Today’s adventure took us on a historical journey from Bicheno to Eaglehawk Neck, with stops at fascinating sites along the way. We enjoyed lunch at the beautiful Tasmanian Bushland Garden in Buckland before setting up camp at the charming Rosedale Homestead.

The kids loved meeting the wildlife there—camels, mini donkeys, and a variety of birds, both native and international. 🐪🦜

In the afternoon, we explored the stunning coastline, visiting Fossil Bay, the blowholes, Tasman Arch, and the breathtaking views from Neck Lookout.

We wrapped up the day back at the homestead, where the kids spent more time with the animals while we relaxed by the fire and caught up on phone calls. (Telstra reception in Tassie is a challenge—too many mountains!)

Looking forward to tomorrow’s exploration of Port Arthur!

📍Freycinet National Park - Day Trip ✨

🌄 Early Bird Adventures:
We started the day bright and early, arriving at the Wineglass Bay walk by 8am to beat the crowds. From the carpark, it’s a climb up 713 steps to the lookout, followed by the 886-step descent to the famous Wineglass Bay Beach.

🏖️ The Experience:
We had the beach almost to ourselves, aside from a few hikers who had been out exploring for days (definitely not our thing—too far from a comfy bed and the fridge 🍻).

💪 The Hike in Numbers:
- Over 3500 steps in total
- 6.5 km round trip
- Completely worth it! (Pro tip: get there early.)

🌊 Afternoon Highlights:
🔹Honeymoon Bay: Nash snorkeled & spotted a few fish (and a lot of seaweed).
🔹Cape Tourville Lighthouse: A short walk rewarded us with stunning views back towards Honeymoon Bay, and we spotted seals on the offshore islands through binoculars!
🔹Sleepy Bay & Friendly Beaches: Not much to rave about—weed-heavy beaches, and we were already spoiled from the morning.

💦 A Refreshing Ending:
We returned to Douglas-Apsley Waterhole so Rylee could finally join in the fun she missed the day before.

🔥 Back at Camp:
The perfect end to the day—songs, marshmallows, and a campfire under the stars.

📍 Day 26: Derby & Bay of Fires 🔥

We stopped by Derby so Nash could check out the incredible mountain biking trails. He really wished we’d brought his bike—he’s so keen on mountain biking! While he made do with his scooter on the pump track, it wasn’t quite the same. We also explored some of the Derby Tunnels on foot, which only made him miss his bike more. If we’d had more time, we would’ve stayed the day and rented one! 🚴‍♂️

On the way to the Bay of Fires, we made a quick stop at 💦 Little Blue Lake before setting up camp at a stunning beachfront free site at Policeman’s Bay. The spot is absolutely beautiful!

Tassie keeps delivering magic, even in the wind. 🌊✨
