UPDATE: AMMONIA LEAK AT WISYNCO COMPANY FULLY CONTAINED
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) wishes to advise that an ammonia leak that occurred earlier this evening at the Wisynco Company plant, White Marl, St.Catherine is now fully contained and rendered safe.
Checks were made to adjourning properties and plants which indicated that the smell had dissipated and there is no further threat to plant workers or the public.
Approximately 12 workers were taken to hospital as a precautionary action after complaints of nausea, however no serious injuries were reported.
The Spanish Town Fire Brigade has attributed the leak to a blown off valve that occurred during sanitation at the Wisynco plant. The gas rapidly spread to the
bottle plant section due to windy conditions.
The situation has been neutralized and is under control. All emergency response actions are now at a close.

Tennis in Jamaica is set to benefit from International Tennis Federation, Women’s Pro Series Tournament slated for October 15 to November 12 when the games will be staged at the Hilton Hotel and Spa in Montego Bay, St. James.
The event is being jointly hosted by the Russell Tennis Academy and the ITF and is expected to attract more than 150 players from 30 different countries seeking valuable Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world ranking points for the start of the 2012 international season.
Director of the tournament and founder of the Russell Tennis Academy, Richard Russell, sees the initiative as an opportunity for young Jamaican female players to experience playing at the higher level.
The Russell Tennis Academy is an organisation dedicated to improve Tennis as a sport by providing support services and training, locally and regionally.
The qualifying session will be on Saturday, while the main draw will serve off on Monday October 17 2011.
