Transformative Coaching Info about Transformative Coaching: the stories, learnings, offerings and work of leaders healing a Who benefits from Transformative Coaching?

The Transformative coaching process involves a deep structural shift in the basic premises of thought, feelings, and actions. It is a shift of consciousness that dramatically and irreversibly alters our way of being in the world. Such a shift involves our understanding of ourselves and our self-locations; our relationships with other humans and with the natural world; our understanding of relation

s of power in interlocking structures of class, race and gender; our body awareness, our visions of alternative approaches to living; and our sense of possibilities for social justice, peace and personal joy. How is Transformative Coaching different from other coaching? The typical approach to coaching is based on starting with goals and goal achievement - The “GROW” model of coaching emphasizes the identification of goals as an entry point to coaching. While support to reaching goals is very important, a focus of goals as outcomes can avoid important learning about the self, resulting in superficial or technical change that cannot be sustained. This is a learner-centered approach not a goal-oriented approach, whereas the leaner/leader is learning about the self in practice. This kind of coaching leads to effective and sustained change over time to one’s leadership practice. Many times leaders seek coaching and thought partnering when they have felt stuck and are ready to make some movement toward a better leadership experience. Leaders who look to create a space in their practice where they can slow down, take stock and reflect on past practice to prepare for future possibilities, seek coaching. Leaders experiencing some kind of crisis in their organization or personal life or transitioning into uncharted waters can benefit from coaching as it can help to stablize, fortify and prepare leaders for their desired future. Many times leaders engage a coach for support in navigating new territories in their work space or role and support in exploring the big questions such a change might pose. A coach can serve to engage a leader in designing a learning process that authentically affirms who they are and addresses their present growth needs. My Coaching Approach

I believe that leaders are capable of solving their own problems. Using a facilitated coaching process, I support leaders in the exploration of their relationship to their personal and positional power. Through a coaching process I help leaders access and leverage their power to manifest their personal and professional vision. I hold a compassionate space for leaders to engage in critical self-reflection and the analysis of what they truly desire. As a result, new perspectives emerge accompanied by new behaviors that support the leader in creating the future they dream of. The coaching process that I use supports and empowers you to choose alternatives that generate results and help you to live life fully and effortlessly. Through questioning, you uncover aspects of yourself that were previously unnoticed and perhaps blocked, making space for you to claim your strengths and begin to re-frame your perceived weaknesses in ways that serve to expand you. As you step into your power and build a new relationship with yourself, you become ready to think, feel and act differently and make new decisions that will help you achieve your vision.

Independence or Interdependence?

In the wake of the celebration of the United States claim to independence, I’m struck by how the ideas and actions of interdependence may be much more relevant to personal and social transformation than those attached to the notion of independence. Some people advocate for independence as the ultimate good; others believe that interdependence serves the common good: mutually benefiting both individuals as well as groups. Leaders that take the time to engage in self-reflection become clearer on their core values and the ways that they want to be seen as a leader. Becoming clearer about what you believe in and what is important to you as a leader will help to strengthen the integrity of your leadership. A solid foundation of the values that guide the use of your positional power will lead you to better decisions. An important outcome of Transformative Coaching is that leaders are empowered to change their frame of reference about leadership and power. By critically reflecting on their taken for granted assumptions and beliefs leaders can more freely use their power as a force for healing, change and growth.

Reflection as a Leadership Skill

Through a reflective practice that can begin with a coach or thought partner you can approach the work of being a leader with presence and personal mastery.
