Itinerary:

Morning visit to Elephanta caves : Across the Mumbai harbor is 1200-year old Elephanta Caves housing some of the most beautiful rock-cuts of the period. The famous Trimurti sculpture of three-faced Shiva depicting his three aspects as Creator, Preserver and Destroyer is powerfully portrayed in the massive sculpture.

The Elephanta island was so named by the Portuguese, after the statue of an elephant near the landing area of the island. These rock cut temples dedicated to Lord Shiva are rich in sculptural content. Motorboats take passengers from Appollo Bunder near the Gateway of India.

Upon return from Elephanta, start the City tour from the Gateway of India, Mumbais principle landmark. This arch of yellow basalt was erected on the waterfront in 1924 to commemorate King George Vs visit to this colony in 1911. Drive past the Afghan Church. Secretariat of Maharashtra Government and along the Marine Drive which is fondly known as the Queens Necklace. Visit Jain temple and Hanging Gardens which offer a splendid view of the city, Chowpatty, Kamala Nehru Park, Prince of Whales Museum and also Mani Bhavan where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Mumbai. Drive past Haji Ali Mosque, a shrine in honour of a Muslim Saint on an island 500 m. out at sea and is linked by a causeway to the mainland. Stop at the Dhobi Ghat where Mumbais dirties are scrubbed, bashed, dyed and hung out to dry. Watch the local train passing close by on which the city commuters hang out like laundry – a nice photography stop. Continue to the colorful Crawford market and to the Flora fountain in the large bustling square, in the heart of the city.

Bandra is the most chic of the western suburb of Mumbai and South Mumbai’s answer to Colaba the uppity southern tip of town. The name Bandra traces its routes to its original Portuguese name ‘Bandora’ which has been analgised to ‘Bandra’ in modern day and is referred as ‘Vandre’ in Marathi. Like most suburbs of Mumbai, Bandra is divided into eastern and western parts. Bandra west is sea facing and mostly residential, whereas Bandra East is the commercial hub that houses the Bandra Kurla Complex and a plethora of formidable corporate companies.

Arrive at Kala nagar (Bandra east) sky walk and walk over to witness the organized chaotic traffic snarls of a local Mumbaikar. Arrive at Bandra station and take a Joy ride by an Auto Rickshaw to the Chimbai village. We meet our car over here and get feel of old Bandra during the drive, which is quite a blend old world charm and modern India. With the city’s largest Catholic population living in this area it boasts of largest number of Roman Catholic Churches in the world! The Catholic influence is a part of the areas’ charm; picturesque bungalows.

Bandra recently added a little more glitz and glamour to its Bollywood style with the opening of its own Walk of the Stars. Open on March 28, 2012 the walk spans a 2-kilometer, stretch along the Bandstand Promenade in Bandra, Mumbai. The sea-facing promenade features the handprints and signatures of Bollywood stars embossed on brass plates on tiles along the path. Later proceed to The Mount Mary Church, the most prominent and largest and oldest church in the city. The present day Church was built in 1760.

Built by the Portuguese in 1640 as a watchtower to oversee the Arabian waters, the strategic value of this fort was enhanced in 1661 after the Portuguese ceded the 07 Islands of Bombay to the British.
