The two faces of Vesuvius, “mouth of hell” or “Patron Saint”?
Is your Italian village in the Vesuvius area? It changes dramatically in the last century!
Surrounding Naples, (Italy's third largest city and considered the capital of the south), is the so-called Vesuvian belt, an area that includes as many as 25 municipalities, belonging precisely to the province of Naples. Of these, 13 are included in the Vesuvius National Park, the protected area established around Mount Vesuvius...
This area is one of the most densely populated not only in Italy, but also in Europe, perhaps in the world!!!
Wait a minute…one of the most urbanized areas in the world hosting a national park? One might ask in amazement! What's more, located at the foot of one of the active volcanoes, considered among the most dangerous in the world? That's right, Vesuvius is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world!
But let's go in order...
Vesuvius is an explosive type of volcano, which means that in the event of an eruption it would manifest as a violent explosion, similar or worse than the one destroying the city of Pompeii, centuries ago. Moreover, the area, as mentioned, is among the most densely populated in the world!
Here, then, are the two main reasons for its dangerousness, which are intertwined with the history of the National Park. This protected area was established in 1995 precisely to protect and redevelop an area that has unfortunately fallen into degradation and disfigured by illegal construction. Here we protect not only the valuable local flora and fauna but also paleontological formations and a whole system connected to the nature of the place. To put it in simple words the volcanic environment, with the lava soil, make the environment a unique and very fertile place, you can taste the products of the area to realize this, for example the famous Vesuvius cherry tomato.
So, what does the area around Vesuvius look like today? And aren't the inhabitants afraid to live here?
I grew up in the so-called "red zone," that is the one most at risk in case of an eruption! We grew up with a vague awareness of an evacuation plan, each municipality would be twinned in a certain region of Italy. For us it was a kind of game and perhaps it still is.
Vesuvius for us is the place for a walk, where to eat the typical “pizza a metro” (a meter long special pizza). The place for us to see the rare flashes of snow, where to spend romantic moments with the boyfriend admiring the view: that immense expanse of lights over the Bay of Naples. For us it is the myth of St. Gennaro who stopped the lava centuries ago, for us it is a silhouette that gives confidence! It seems incredible! But it is! Perhaps in our hearts we think that Vesuvius instead of hurting us loves us and wants to protect us.
We move placidly through our crowded municipalities, which do not fail to host priceless treasures such as the Vesuvian Villas, Roman-era villas hidden and saved from concrete, and our world-famous archaeological areas (Pompeii and Herculaneum), perhaps using the “circumvesuviana”, the electric train that connects Naples to the whole area.
Our eye sometimes falls there, to Vesuvius. Look! We say to each other as happy as babies, today there is snow on the top! He winks at us from there.
Is it going to erupt? Demonic menace or holy protector? Vesuvius after all is just like the "Vesuvians," its inhabitants.

From July 2024 Campania will finally have a second airport!
In addition to the airport in Naples, our region will have a second option located further south, between the town of Bellizzi and Pontecagnano, just a few kilometres from the city of Salerno, the beautiful Amalfi Coast, and the southern province of Salerno, which is home to the whole wonderful Cilento area!
This will also benefit those who wish to visit the neighbouring Basilicata region, which now becomes closer and more accessible!
This new, modern functional and self-sustaining airport will facilitate your travel to the villages of your origin in the province of Salerno, but also to the lower province of Naples and Avellino!
At the moment the first flights are scheduled for (July 2024), and will connect the area with Milan, Berlin, Geneva, London, but also Cagliari, (Sardinia) Catania, (Sicily) Verona, (Veneto), but soon many more will be added! Before your trip also consider this new opportunity!

What would your life be like if your ancestors/ great grandfathers had stayed in Italy?
Have you ever wondered? Do you feel like finding out?
There is a way to get a little taste of it that can be very impactful: stay even just a few days in the village of your origins, not like a hurried tourist for a few hours, but live as an inhabitant of the community…as if your relatives had never left!
But what does that mean specifically?
- Deciding to stay there is the first step!
- Don't choose a regular hotel, but an apartment or a diffused accommodation.
- Do your shopping in local markets and small stores, such as authentic salumeria, where customers and the shopkeeper are on a first-name basis!
- If the municipality is large enough to have its own network of public transportation, use it, at least once!
- If you a sacred time, listen to mass in the village church, it is one of the major gathering places, and even if you do not understand the language, faith transcends words!
- Walk through the town square: we Italians are descended from the Greeks and Romans, whereas the square was the heart of the community and a place to gather, and it still is, especially in small villages. Walk around the square, have coffee and cornetto in the village bar, the inhabitants will be happy to chat with you, you'll see, even if you don't speak Italian, it will be fun to find ways to communicate!
- Be open to invitation to a "home restaurant": a local family welcomes you for lunch or dinner. A great way to feel part of the community and try the real local cuisine-not a tourist, but a relative invited for lunch!
- If there are parish festivals, food-fests or celebrations during your stay, it is the perfect opportunity to take part in them!

How can this experience enrich you?
In many ways! Spending more time in your home village will give you a way to explore and experience the places of your Italian relatives, the church, the street where they lived, the cemetery where they rest. You may run into distant relatives you never knew you had! And, deeper inside, you may get to know a part of your history, add a new piece in the search for ourself, that helps complete each individual’s full story.
This is what "Connect to Your Campania Roots is all about."

2 Nights in the Village, is my 2024 Program for you!
Are you sure you want to rush around your Italian village for a mere two hours? Don’t you think that your Italian village might deserve a longer time after you travelled from overseas to learn more about your ancestors?
I know your difficulties, given it is not easy to get information about off the beaten path tourist places, and perhaps you don’t know how to get there or where to stay overnight!
I can help you.

If you are interested in my being your ancestor tour designer this is the way I operate:
My program for you:
“2 Notti nel Borgo”
(2 nights in the Village)

Step 1: A video call
After you have contacted me (via WhatsApp, Skype or via email) we can plan a “no obligation” video call for you to share your ideas and expectations for your ancestor tour, in order that I can plan the ideal visit for you.
During this call I will need some important information, like the projected date of your travel and the estimated budget that you want to use for it.
Step 2: The quote
After this first step, I will send you an email with my quotation for your tailor-made mini tour.
Step 3: The ancestor tour proposal
After you to accept my quote (by an email) you will receive my draft proposal. This is the moment when you choose your accommodation among my proposals (2 or 3 depending on the village offer) and we can discuss any aspect of the mini tour. It is important that you to tell me at this time if there are things you want to change before I go ahead with the reservations. I will give you a reasonable amount of time to make your decision.
Step 4: Your tailor-made ancestor tour program
After we have discussed your specific expectations and you have accepted the first proposal, I will complete the project with the specific details. I will then send the final document within a specified time as agreed upon in prior communication.

The journey of roots from a different perspective...
It’s been said that the journey of roots is a journey of the soul, always a great emotional moment, when one finds one's roots for the first time.
The wonderment before, during, and after reconstructing one's family tree, comes to a culmination in physically visiting the regions, the village, and that actual house.
A broader perspective is offered by metagenealogy leading to expanded self-discovery. This is a tool that analyzes the family tree from a psychological heritage and not just a biological perspective. The father of this discipline was Alejandro Jodorowsky who along with other authors, developed further approaches to genealogy, and laid the foundation of psychogenealogy.
It involves looking into the history of one's ancestors to "unearth" a connection between the lives and familial patterns of our ancestors and how they may impact the present generation. Behaviors, illnesses, and family tendencies that affect us, may be inherited from our family tree! According to many theories, we are much more than children or grandchildren, we are part of a bigger picture or blueprint, our family tree, which affects us in different ways in which we may not be aware.
So, it happens that those who use this technique can discover that they had ancestors who suffered from the same disorder that afflicts them, or they find long sought after answers in the family DNA. Discovering these connections can result in a better life and often provide life enhancing clues to our path forward.
The family tree is a living tree, and its roots continue to expand in the soil in the form of our unconscious patterns, feelings, and coping mechanisms that can be both strengths, and areas in need of growth. In the fitting words of William Faulkner, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

If you’re traveling to Italy for the first time, it can be useful to have an idea of the geography of Campania region. Have a look at a map with the Campania cities.
There are many reasons to visit Campania! Before or after visiting your ancestor village remember that this is the region of Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi coast, Naples!
Your airport is Naples, however, considering that Italy is a small country in a few hours you reach the main regions travelling with high-speed trains. They can reach the 300 km/186 miles per hour.
Distances from the main Italian cities and Naples, the region capital.
Rome to Naples: the high-speed train, takes approximately 1 hour, 1 hour and half. Consider that driving the time will be double.
Firenze to Naples: 3 hours by high-speed train.
Venice to Naples: 5 hours by high-speed train.
https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

Distances between interior locations in Campania:
Naples to Salerno: about 40 minutes with a regional train, or 40 minutes driving by highway
Naples to Capri via boat (about 40 minutes by the fast boat) and Salerno (90 minutes by the fast boat).
Naples to Sorrento via special local train called “Circum-Vesuviana” https://www.eavsrl.it/web/orari-linee-ferroviarie # or driving (about 1 hour, depending on traffic!)
Naples or Salerno to the Amalfi coast: The Amalfi coast is in the middle of the two cities
*If your village is in the huge Salerno province, know that the high-speed train gets to Salerno! From Naples you can reach any other city by a regional train in less than 1 hour, the same driving. Naples is closer Positano, but Salerno is closer to the rest of the Amalfi southern stretch, by boat or car.

The “root traveller” is not just any tourist! Most of the time his destination is not a crowded tourist resort, but an authentic village often unknown even to Italians themselves from other regions.
One might wonder whether it is a good idea to stay overnight, or perhaps move to the nearest tourist resort.
The choice is not easy, and there are pros and cons. Much obviously changes depending on the village, from size, location, services, amenities, etc.
One thing, however, is certain, deciding to stay in your ancestral village means living the experience fully, knowing the most authentic Italy, feeling much closer to your ancestors, let alone that in these villages, time often seems to stand still!
But the question is where to stay? Since these places are not open to tourism there is not much choice!
This is not always true, many of these villages, which are often real treasure troves of beauty and art, are opening up to hospitality, one of the most interesting types being the "albergo diffuso” or "scattered hotel." Difficult to translate yet increasing in Campania and throughout Italy, these types of non-traditional lodgings are
aviable option: the various accommodations are scattered throughout the village and not in a single building, often they are old houses, charmingly renovated.
The result is a unique, fascinating experience, the perfect way to feel part of the community!

Which is the village of your ancestors?
Maybe Trentinara, the so-called terrace of the Cilento, (Salerno area) for its position on the hilltop with a breathtaking view. From the panoramic square you can admire a fantastic landscape on the Sele plain and Paestum, where the ancient Greek Temples are.
Trentinara is even known as the “bread village”. Here they bake a typical, very tasty bread, celebrated every August during “La festa del pane”. Along the picturesque old center, you can walk along the via “dell’amore”, a romantic pathway with poets on the wall…

29/11/2023

The city of Salerno is located in between the two beautiful Campania coastlines: The Amalfi coast to the right, and the Cilento to the left.
The huge Salerno province, made of picturesque villages, was impacted last century by a massive emigration. There is a chance that your ancestral village could have experienced such an exodus.
At Christmas time the city attracts people from all over the boot for the artisan lights: “Salerno luci D’artista”. The atmosphere is magical, and the city turns into a Christmas fairy tale.

"A root tour" is profoundly different from anything you may have done so far, because typically your family comes from a small village. In such places you have the opportunity to discover the genuine and simple local life, not a crowded tourist destination, but a place where you can learn about the time-honored and respected peasant traditions, dialect, cuisine, etc. An authentic reality, not remodelled tourist excursion!
But in practice, what could you do?
Each experience is always tailor-made, but among the various activities:
Visit the house, or the place where your ancestors' house stood;
The church where your family members were baptized or married;
The cemetery where they rest;
In general, the places of the heart that perhaps have been described to you.
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to visit them in person? Have you ever wondered if they are as you envisioned or vastly different? What they might be or have been like?
Cosa aspetti?!

13/11/2023

What I can do for you:
• Identifying your specific village in Campania- Why? the assumed name might be wrong or has changed!
• How to get there- Why? Many are off the beaten path, and complicated to reach!
• How to find relatives and documents– Why? People in small villages rarely speak any English!
• How to experience the local life, recommending overnight accommodations, and verifying current village activities. - Why? old internet postings are not always up to date or accurate!

11/11/2023

What is the villages of your ancestors? Perhaps it is Felitto, in the beauty of the national park of the Cilento, Salerno area.
Here's an excerpt from a roots tour with Chris, his great-grandfather left from there, last century. He knew about the "Felittese Association" in the United States. That's why he wanted to visit the original village in Italy!
Enjoy the video!

Which is the village of your ancestors ? Perhaps it is Roccadspide, in the province of Salerno bordering the National park of Cilento.
In November they celebrate one of their typical local foods, “le castagne” …or the chestnut. In Italy, these special festivals are called “Sagre”. They are often in picturesque settings where one walks down narrow alleys with different stands in each courtyard, featuring local foods based upon the product they are celebrating.
At chestnut festival you can taste the “fresh pasta made with chestnut flour”, a second dish with meat like wild boar and chestnuts and chestnut desserts with your choice of refreshments to include local wine!

The Campania region is made up of five provinces (similar to American counties), each having unique characteristics. During the large emigration period, most “Campani” people left from the provinces of Avellino and Salerno, particularly from the Irpinia area of Avellino, and Cilento area of Salerno. From these two countryside locations, are a high concentration of villages where immigrants left friends and family behind for better opportunities overseas. Some eventually returned with financial savings, yet many stayed and made a new life, yet still feeling the inevitable connection to Southern Italy.
