Surviving Thanksgiving travel like a true Jetsetter

Who can forget the 1987 Thanksgiving classic “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”? A hilarious film starring Steve Martin as uptight business traveler Neal Page, and John Candy as overly talkative and good natured Del Griffith. The two share a three day travel misadventure of Neal trying to make it home in time for Thanksgiving.

As today is one of the busiest travel days of the year, I am reminded of the film and just how challenging Thanksgiving week can be when traveling. For many it could be dealing with flight delays and weather, traffic, and the stress of making it to your destination in time for Turkey. Here are five tips to survive Thanksgiving travel:

1. Make sure to arrive at the airport at least two hours early for domestic travel. You don’t want to be running from security to the gate to barely catch your flight like the McCallister’s in Home Alone.
2. If you don’t already have TSA Pre-check, purchase it now! You can easily cut the wait time in line from 45 minutes or more to less than 15 minutes depending on the airport. Not to mention you get to leave your shoes on and laptop in your bag. Trust me when I say this is the best $100 you will spend on travel.
3. Purchase a one day pass to the airlines lounge. For $60 you can purchase the American Airlines Admirals club at most major airports. You can relax in the lounge on your layover or if you get to the airport early enough and grab a snack or drink in your retreat away from the busy terminal. If you travel enough and are looking for free club membership and more miles, I suggest applying for the Citi AAdvantage Executive Mastercard.

What was Jetsetting like in 1987 compared to today? For starters, it wasn't uncommon to see most men dressed in suits and for many adult passengers to be smoking. Flying was seen as a treat as opposed to a hassle. And airlines like Pan Am and TWA were regularly seen flying 747s oversees. Those were the days!

Why I travel?

Sometimes I urgently need to get out and go… just to go. Sound like YOU?

Sometimes I need to go see my team play a meaningful road game in a new ballpark or stadium I’ve never seen. Have YOU ever done this?

Sometimes I need to cross another state off my list. I just did both in Philly!


I just recently HAD to go see my Dodgers play in Philly, so I went. Citizens Bank ballpark is a “must go!” Who’s YOUR baseball team? What stadium do YOU badly want to see?

Cheesesteaks around the city are pure and amazing! What food do YOU want to have from out of town?

Philly! A great spot to see America’s pastime! I punched out Rocky at his statue BTW (don’t let the statue stop you from hurting your hand) LOL!

Chicago Cubs Rooftop Playoff Experience

Weekend Jetsetters is proud to present the Chicago Cubs Rooftop Playoff Experience. We're getting closer! Who is rooting for the Cubbies to make another run for the World Series?

We are gearing up to finalize some details for an ultimate Cubs Playoff experience which includes viewing the National League Division playoff games from the rooftops surrounding Wrigley. Now, of course we don't have any firm details yet, but our hope is to get you an opportunity to see the legendary Cubs at a price much lower than anything else you'll see once we know for sure that the Cubs are making the playoffs.

What we do know: Games will start the week of Monday, October 9th.

What we're planning to provide: a rooftop ticket to an unobstructed view into Wrigley, food and beverages, and a special Cubs gift.

Note: If the Cubs don't make the playoffs, full refunds will be provided. No risk, but definite reward if you can take early action.

Ticket price PRIOR to announcement will be $350, and can be secured with a $50 downpayment. Prices will increase once more details are confirmed.
