Oahu, Hawai'i- Saturday Farmers' Market at Kapiolani Community College: Thousands flock to the KCC Farmers' Market held every Saturday morning (7:30-11:00 AM) in a parking lot at the foot of Diamond Head. It's a bustling, colorful mecca of local vendor stands selling everything from Egyptian plate lunches to sweet Kahuku corn-on-the-cob to homemade ginger ale. Shopping is a given, as well as all the free samples offered by many of the vendors. Ba-Le Bakery for bread samples, Akamai Foods for sweet oatcakes, Paniolo Popcorn for fresh kettle corn, and Made In Hawaii Foods for tastes of exotic jams and jellies are just a few.

Planning a trip to Waikiki with the kids? You may want to include picking up lunch at Zippy's and having a picnic at Ala Moana Beach Park. Any local will tell you that nothing tastes better than a Zip Pac on the beach. Zippy's is famous for these huge bentos (rice topped with furikake seasoning, fried mahimahi, fried chicken, teriyaki beef and Spam) as well as their chili (with rice, of course), saimin, and fried chicken barrels. Ala Moana is a popular weekend hangout, with plenty of grassy space for kids to play a game of soccer or Frisbee, as well as a nice stretch of beach that's especially suited for younger kids, as it has no waves. When it's low tide and the reef is exposed in ankle-deep shallows (near the wall by Magic Island), kids hunt for small crabs, shrimp and fish hiding in the rocks. At Magic Island, you might even see canoe-paddling teams gearing up for a race in the harbor.
