I love when a city completely surprises me. 😍 Turin wasn’t even on my original itinerary, but with a few spare days on a Piedmont trip, I thought, why not?

Wow—Turin isn’t just a stopover; it’s a destination that deserves its own spotlight. This elegant city blends historic grandeur with a vibrant food, wine, and culture scene. Think stately piazzas, world-class museums, and café culture that rivals Paris. Oh, and the chocolate? Divine!

Don't skip indulging in a perfect Bicerin (Turin’s famed coffee-chocolate drink).

Picture yourself strolling through Turin’s elegant colonnades—miles of graceful arches that shelter boutique shops, cozy cafés, and the perfect aperitivo spot. Pair that with a glass of Barolo, and you’ll see why Turin is the ideal companion to a Piedmont wine trip. 🍷

If only prejudice could be cured with a plane ticket...

This quote comes from Mark Twain's experiences during his travels through Europe, which he documented in "The Innocents Abroad."

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."

Crossing the street in Italy? It’s part skill, part game of chance.

It's rare that a driver will stop for you because you need to cross, even at a pedestrian crossing. You need to make the first move. Standing on the curb waiting? You’ll be there all day. In places like Rome, just step off into the crosswalk with confidence, and they’ll stop (probably).

But no matter where you are, it's a good idea to always make sure the driver notices you before stepping into the crosswalk.

Here’s how to do it like a local:

👀 Make Yourself Real: Catch the driver’s eye, give them a nod or a little wave. Once they’ve acknowledged your existence, you’re good to go.

✋ Use the Hand Signal: Politely but firmly hold up your hand like, “Hey, I’m trying to cross here!”

🚶‍♀️ Don’t Hesitate: Once you step into the street, keep going. If you chicken out and step back, get ready for a crash course in Italian hand gestures.

Also, be on the lookout for scooters that might come screaming past the car stopped for you.

Buona fortuna!

Do you know what the #1 travel rule is?
Be flexible!
If you can be flexible with your travel days, you can save money on airfare.
If you can adapt when things don't go as planned, you'll have a much better trip.
And, most importantly, if you're not set to a strict schedule, you're free to discover things as they come along.

Back before GPS, on one of our first trips to Italy, we were driving a rental car, hopelessly trying to find our hotel. We’d circled the town so many times I was starting to memorize the street signs.

Finally, on what must’ve been our sixth loop, I spotted it—our hotel! Excited, we pulled over. At the exact same moment, a bus decided it was also time to move…and clipped our bumper.

Thankfully, it wasn’t too serious (just a little Italian-style "welcome"), and since we were right at the hotel, we could quickly find someone to help translate. Crisis averted!

Travel is a lot easier now with GPS, but moments like this are a good reminder: it’s not always glamorous, and things will sometimes go wrong.

It's also a reminder that good travel insurance can save the day. Want to know what coverage is right for you and your trip? Schedule a quick session, and I’ll help you figure it out. Let’s make sure you’re prepared for the unexpected—bus or otherwise!

Think you could tell the difference between Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir in a blind tasting? It’s not as easy as it sounds (but hey, practicing is half the fun, right?).

This guide breaks it all down—no fluff, no jargon, just clear, visual infographics that explain:

✔️ The key aromas and flavors of each wine.

✔️ How these grapes change depending on where they’re grown.

✔️ Which regions around the world they call home.

Want to level up your wine game? Drop a 🍷 in the comments, and I’ll send you the guide!

That old quote: "It's all about who you know" is so true when it comes to visiting small, family-owned wineries.

In Europe, most of the time, you need an appointment for a tour and tasting—and the hidden gems? They often don’t do tours at all.

Unless you have a private guide who’s built relationships with the owners.

That’s why I always recommend setting aside at least one day for a guided tour. Here’s why:

1️⃣ You’ll gain access to places you’d never find on your own.

2️⃣ You can actually drink wine—because you’ll have a driver.

3️⃣ Your tour will be tailored to your wine knowledge and personal preferences.

You might be familiar with Michelin Star restaurants, which can get crazy expensive (if you can even get a reservation). But there's another way to get a gourmet meal without the price tag.

Bib Gourmand is a Michelin Guide award that's given to restaurants that serve high-quality food at a reasonable price. The price limit for Bib Gourmand consideration varies from country to country, but it's always considered a value.

*We're talking 40€ for a 3-course meal!*

There's an alternative to pricey Champagne. Sure, Champagne is delicious, but if you're supplying the bubbly for a crowd, you might need to watch the budget. Enter
Crémant.

Look for Crémant on a bottle of French sparkling wine. Many regions of France make sparkling wine, but it can't be called 'Champagne' if it's not from the Champagne region.
Crémant is made using the same Champagne method without the price tag.

Cheers, and Happy New Year! 🥂

When travel’s off the table, we turn to food. And, if you're like us and you aren't traveling to Germany this Christmas, you can still bring a bit of that holiday gemütlichkeit home.

These cookies are light and crisp, with delicious almond and vanilla flavors. Warning: they tend to vanish fast, so doubling the batch is just plain smart.

👉 *Pro tip*: they’re perfect on their own, but pair them with hot apple cider spiked with German apple schnapps, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a festive moment. ✨
