One of the top places in the world to see Christmas lights is in Colombia.
The Christmas season in #medellin involves 31 million LED lights in addition to over 950 kilometers of rope lighting. The central node will be located in Carabobo Norte. The monumental figures can be seen in the North Park, which will have free admission, and there are many lights over the river. Lights are also spread through over 100 parks and neighborhoods.
Medellín is the only city in South America that is part of the assembly of illuminated cities of the world – LUCI- (Lighting Urban Community International).
It used to be that the lights officially switched on on December 7 to coincide with Little Candle’s Day, a major holiday in Colombia where people place candles in windows and other places in honor of the Virgin Mary.

Every February, Brazilians flood the streets for five days to celebrate Carnival. Rio, of course, is the queen of pre-Lenten destinations. The second-largest Carnaval in the world, celebrated since the 19th century, is in Barranquilla, on Colombia’s northern Caribbean coast. It received a UNESCO Heritage Award as a “magnificent” example of folkloric expression, and it’s sensational!
In Mexico, the biggest events take place in the port cities, with the largest of all in Mazatlan. Mazatlan's Carnaval is said to attract well over 300,000 people, making it the third largest such event behind Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. Port towns such as Cozumel, Ensenada, La Paz and Veracruz are also excellent places to watch Carnaval festivities. Sunday is the biggest organized celebration of the weekend, and typically includes the big float parade, and lots of musicians playing on stages and dancing in the streets. Monday is El Dia del Marido Oprimido, or the Day of the Oppressed Husband. On this one day, for 23.5 hours, husbands have the freedom to do as they wish ... within the law and religious faith of course.
Excitement, vibrant colors, drums, music and a festive ambience are all synonymous with the Dominican Carnival season celebrated every year in the months of February and March across the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Carnival celebrates a mixture of rituals, cultures and traditions inherited from the ancestors of the Dominican people; the Taínos, Africans and Europeans. It is thought the Dominican Carnival or “Carnaval Dominicano” was brought to the country by Christopher Columbus, with evidence that this annual tradition started at some point in the 1500’s.
