We met this Mer lady from Porbandar during one of our many travels across Gujarat at one the many highway pit-stops we take. She wore her tattoos and her jewellery with equal elan and was more than happy to pose for a picture. Ranakpur Jain temples are a major pilgrimage site for people from the Jain community and are also a big tourist attraction. Inconspicuously hidden in a ‘bowl’ of mountains, the many temples emerge magically as one approaches them by the winding road. The main temple complex has 1444 exquisitely carved pillars and no two are alike. There are many such interesting facts and trivia that can keep a visitor engaged for a few hours and mesmerised forever thereafter.

The first temple of the Swaminarayan sect, this temple dates back to 1822. Marvellously carved panels in Burma teak wood are a distinct feature of this temple. Located in the Kalupur area of old Ahmedabad, the famous ‘mandir se masjid tak’ heritage walk commences here.
Dating back to pre 12th century, this temple and the town served as a backdrop to the famed Indian Romeo-Juliet story of Dhola-Maru. Unmatched architecture and exquisite carvings are the highlights of the Jain temples of Lodurva. People come from across the world to pay their respects to Lord Parshvanath.

Tanot Rai Mata Temple is at a distance of 150 km from Jaisalmer, and barely 20 km from the India-Pak border. This unique temple is maintained by the BSF and is open only to Indian nationals for Darshan or visit. During the 1965 India-Pakistan war, around 3000 bombs/ shells were targeted at this temple but none could cause any damage, in fact, those bombs did not even explode. A few of those bombs are displayed on the premises.
Khodiyar maa is worshipped by many castes in Gujarat and a few in Rajasthan too. Her mount is a crocodile. Many whose Kuldevi is Khodiyar maa, use ‘Khodiyar’ as their surname as well. This temple is located near the main entrance to The Statue of Unity, Kevadia.
The uniqueness of this Shiva temple is that it is built around a toe-print of Lord Shiva and this toe-print is worshipped here, unlike other Shiva temples where it is the Shivalinga that is worshipped. Located on the way to Achalgarh Fort in Mount Abu, Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple is believed to be constructed in 9th century AD.
Eid Mubarak! Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad is a perfect amalgamation of Mughal, Jain and Hindu architecture. The famous ‘mandir se masjid’ heritage walk concludes at this famous mosque.
A mosque that dates back to the year 1513 and was built in a blend of Mughal and Hindu architectural styles, and still ranks high among the most notable monuments in Gujarat. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, the mosque attracts many visitors every year. This here is the Jama Masjid of Champaner.
Moti Dungri Ganesh Mandir receives thousands of devotees and visitors per day. Built in the Nagara style architecture, one needs to climb a few steps before entering the temple through one of the three entrances. Located in the heart of Jaipur city, the idol here receives the maximum number of wedding invites than any other Ganesha temple in the city.
Shamalaji is an archangel among the 154 pilgrimages for the Vaishnavites in India. Dedicated to a black representation of Lord Vishnu, known as Sakshi Gopal or Gadadhar or Shamalaji, this ancient temple stands on the banks of Meshwo river in the Aravalli district of Gujarat. An annual fair is held here on a large scale during the Hindu calendar month of Kartik (October-November).

A 40-meter monument shines bright at the location of the Dandi March. A statue of the Mahatma sits beneath a pyramid of light immortalizing the moment the Salt Law was broken.
