Footprints of London Footprints of London provides unusual and interesting walks across London, and online virtual tours a

Footprints of London started out as a group of guides who were studying at the University of Westminster. We all loved working together so decided to set up Footprints of London. We felt that the existing London walking tours, while good, only covered a small part of London's amazing history - there was so much more to talk about. Footprints of London has grown, with more guides joining, however t

he idea remains the same. All our guides talk about a subject that they are passionate about. The walks are researched and written by the guides themselves and all the guides really love sharing their enthusiasms with people who come on the walks. See http://footprintsoflondon.com for the latest list of walks. Navvies built the canals and railways, moving from site to site in gangs. Great moral concern arose, ranging from horror at their debauchery to adulation of their strength. Hear about their way of living as we view the Hill, Regent's Canal, railway machinery and houses built for workers.

Primrose Hill is now one of London's desirable areas, but it was born with the blood, sweat and toil that built canals and railways.

With the screening of the first TV episode of The Mirror and the Light, the final instalment of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy, interest in all things Tudor is reaching fever pitch. The BBC has scoured the country to find suitably sumptuous locations to form an appropriate backdrop to the epic storytelling and larger than life characters. But there are numerous London locations linked to the key characters and events and of the age to be discovered – if you know where to look…...

"Such foolswe are, she thought, crossing Victoria
Street. For Heaven onlyknows why one loves it
so, how one sees it so, making it up,building it
round one, tumbling it, creating it every

dejected of miseries sitting on doorsteps (drink
their downfall) do the same; can't bedealt with,
she felt positive, by Acts of Parliament for that
very reason: they love life" Virginia Woolf Mrs Dalloway.

Picture of Victoria Street from when the book was written. I'll be following the route Mrs Dalloway takes in the book, talking about 1920s London and the book on my walk on Friday.

Illustrated London News drawing of St Peter's Italian Church which opened in 1863 to serve the growing population of Italian people who had settled in Saffron Hill. The church has a statue of a different saint in each alcove - each representing a city in Northern Italy so hopefully everyone felt at home in the church. I'll be telling the story of this community in my walk on Friday https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1004332324017

Thanks to Londonist and Matt Brown for listing my Saturday's migrations walk that shows the overlaps and similarities in different groups' travels to work in London. Holborn backstreets nice and empty on weekends. Cittee of York at the end. Booking link in comment.

Londoners mostly avoid Essex -- prejudice against it is heavily entrenched. A good consequence of this is the scarcity of other walkers! Rochford, less than an hour's journey from Liverpool Street Station, has a good-looking townscape, craggy-wild and beautiful marsh and river plus it was the Hotbed of Protestantism! Creative rebels abound. 12 Oct: 2 guides, me and Rob Smith.

Gorgeous marsh landscape, old houses and bloody Tudor history in Rochford, a hotbed of Nonconformism now only an hour from London.
