In our latest for JSTOR Daily, see how pioneering feminist thinkers envisioned Biden's proposed child allowances more than 100 years ago!

The Biden administration’s proposed “child allowances” draw on the feminist thought of Crystal Eastman, who advocated “motherhood endowments” 100 years ago.

Welcome to April! The warmer weather has us out for some wandering. A Tuesday stroll over the 59th Street Bridge brought us to the Upper East Side, where we snapped this bright blue door blaring out of a brownstone in the East 60s. “And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.” - Ada Louise Huxtable, New York Times
-
NYPAP kicks off with a look at renowned architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable. During her lifetime, Huxtable wrote with fervor, fighting for the preservation of architecturally significant buildings in New York City.
-
Huxtable worked for The New York Times from 1963 - 1982, during which time she helped establish the field of architectural journalism. She was awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for architecture criticism in 1970. Most notably however, is the impact her work had on historic preservation.
-
Between 1961 and the passage of the New York City Landmarks Law in 1965, she wrote over 20 pro-preservation editorials; they were instrumental in educating and galvanizing the public about historic preservation. She firmly advocated for landmark legislation in New York and wrote about the necessity of a Landmarks Law and explained the basics as to why. Her work brought attention to a number of preservation controversies such as the demolition of Penn Station, alteration to Grand Central Terminal, the preservation of Carnegie Hall and the controversial redesign of 2 Columbus Circle.
-
Later in life, she would go on to become the architecture critic for The Wall Street Journal, her last published article condemned the changes to the New York Public Library building at Fifth Avenue and 42st Street.
-
Following her passing on January 7, 2013, she bequeathed her archives and estate to the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.
