Lots of good Canadian content in this video from the World Championships in Florida and Grinning Streak brought home the Corinthian trophy. The fleet is alive and on a building phase in North America after a fabulous Worlds event. One Canadian team has remained active in the Miami series and with some new and talented owners getting everybody wound up again, it might just be the spark needed to pull more Canadian 20s out of retirement and ready for action.

Justin Quigg with teammates Julian Plante and Nick Cleary absolutely dominated the corinthian fleet winning every race in the division. Justin will have a lot to celebrate when he makes it home for Thanksgiving dinner

That last cool handshake at the end of this great video was Justin Quigg accepting his second daily win of top corinthian. There are a lot of action packed shots and some sweet video highlights on the main M20 page right here: https://www.facebook.com/Melges20/

Justin Quigg's Character 2.0 wins top Corinthian award after the first day of racing. Grinning Streak had some technical difficulties but should be back in the water after a night at the shop getting her bow sprit bulkhead put back where it belongs. It was challenging out there today with the sea state but as always, big breeze and the Melges 20 means a ton of fun, no matter how you end up in the standings!

Character 2.0 and Grinning Streak, the only two Canadian boats at this year's Melges 20 Worlds in Newport, were out playing today during the North Sails tuning clinic. Light to moderate winds and plenty of sunshine made for a nice warm-up for the event. Tomorrow is another day for practicing at the Pre-Worlds regatta. Competitors are beginning to gather at Sail Newport for today's debrief and to finalize their registration. Looks like a fantastic week of decent wind, super competitive sailing and lots of great socials. As usual, you will find more information and plenty of photos on the Melges 20 page or at www.melges20.com

Paul Currie on Wild Deuces finishes the season with a perfect scoring regatta to win the Canadian Championship. There were very tricky conditions on both days with the weather forecast not reflecting the actual conditions at all. Boats often alternated from the front to the back of the fleet during the same race but Currie managed to finish at the top all seven races. Justin Quigg's Character 2.0 finished second and John Heaton on It's Madness rounded out the top three. That wraps up the 2017 season on Lake Ontario. Next up, with two Canadian boats competing (Character 2.0 and Grinning Streak), is the 2017 World Championship in Newport this October. For details go to https://yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm

Justin Quigg with teammates Nick Cleary and Everett McLaughlin went for a clean sweep with six straight bullets for this year's Royal Weekend regatta. The real battle was for second and third place between Rhonda Joyce's Batteries Not Required (2nd) and Paul Currie's Wild Deuces (3rd). The conditions were better than forecasted and RC went for two longer races in sunshine and an average of 8 kts of breeze.
Next up is the fourth and final regatta of the series with the Canadian Championship being held at the RCYC September 9/10.

Justin Quigg on Character 2.0 had a stellar day with four bullets yesterday for the start of Event #3 in the Lake Ontario series. Conditions improved all day as the rain patches and shifty light winds gave way to a solid 15 knots of breeze from the south. Batteries Not Required is sitting in second followed by Wild Deuces in 3rd.
As usual, there was a dock side gathering on MARS after racing with beer and snacks compliments of Justin Quigg and Mike Wolfs then a great social up at the club, again with free drinks, and a regatta dinner with all of the other fleets competing at this year's Royal Weekend Regatta at the RCYC. Today is expected to be less windy and although only a total of six races were originally scheduled for the event, the Melges 20 fleet was polled and if the conditions are favourable (ie at least eight knots of breeze) then a third will be run.

Listen to CHIN radio (am1540) this morning at 10:00 for a live broadcast from the starting line! Hugo Straney will be doing a sailing themed program for his Irish radio show including interviews with Mike Wolfs, Tommy Donnelley and maybe Rhonda Joyce on Batteries Not Required if logistics permit

It's absolutely champagne sailing for the first Melges 20 race of the summer. Sunshine, flat water and 8-12 knots of breeze. So far the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta is proving to be a gem of an event

And that's a wrap. The Miami winter series is over for another year. No racing today leaves Grinning Streak, with skipper Rhonda Joyce, tactician and main trimmer Tony Bowman and headsail trimmer Jeremy Edwards in first place for the Corinthian division for the regatta. It's a bittersweet win for sure as the whole fleet was hoping to get one more day of big breeze sailing in. Next up on the Schedule will be the Melges USA Cup, May 5-7 in Newport

04/03/2017

The fleet left the dock in big breeze hoping to get a race off while it was hovering right at class limits. For those that got out on time, we got a solid upwind tuning session in before a screaming joyride downwind. There was no doubt the odd gust hit 30 kts. Grinning Streak was totally dialled in and raring to go when the AP on shore was called and the fleet headed back in. Right now everyone is hopin for the best

What a fabulous day of racing it was today! Those on spectator boats were thoroughly entertained with plenty great wipeouts and even a few swimmers but according to the dockside war stories, the racers all had a blast. Grinning Streak finished her first race the same way she finished her last two in big breeze last December - on her side - but this time due to a gear malfunction. Tony Bowman and Jeremy Edwards worked fiendishly between races to troubleshoot the problem and get the new kite rigged in time for the next race and the team clearly found her groove, staying upright for the rest of the day and finishing top Corinthian by one point. Tomorrow will be more of the same awesomeness on the water before the whole fleet gathers for the Melges Rocks party.

02/03/2017

Sunshine and moderate breeze for today's practice races. It's a good way to ease us into the regatta because the rest of the weekend is forecasted to have spectacular wind all three days. This will be a perfect opportunity for Grinning Streak, the sole Canadian boat competing, to redeem herself from December's big breeze fiasco. Luckily Race committee has a great sense of humour and persistent reminders of the full contact finish are all in good fun.
