Once upon a time, long before Europe was defined as it is today, the ancient Dacian troops were fighting in wars for their people. Even from far away, when you could not even recognize the colours and symbols on their clothes, everybody knew that this army belonged to the Dacian people – because they carried the Draco. It had the form of a dragon with wolf head, containing several metal tongues. This hollow dragon's head was carried with the army on a pole. But most importantly: In use, the Dacian Draco was held up into the wind where it was filled with air and even seemed to be alive while making a shrill sound. So everybody knew whose warriors were about to arrive.
Until know, the Dacian Dragon is still a huge Romanian legend and is seen as a symbol for strength and protection all over the “Carpathian Garden”, which is how Romania called itself lately. Depending on the region of the country, the pictures of the dragon can differ in many ways, which shows once more the huge diversity of the Romanian country: from Transylvania with its medieval architecture and mountain ranges, over the Dobrogea Region with the stunning Delta of Danube, up to the more traditional region Maramures and finally of course the Walachia region and the capital Bucharest, with its incredible cosmopolitan vibe.
