As we celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, we invite you to explore our diverse cultural heritage in southeast Louisiana with two wonderful trails.

The 1811 Slave Revolt Trail in Louisiana’s River Parishes strives to shine a light on the struggles of the enslaved and continued struggles for justice. Enslaved people organized a march to New Orleans to demand freedom. They moved along the river, burning plantations and gathering participants. Today, the Whitney Plantation Museum and nearby areas commemorate this history with markers and educational tours.

The Louisiana Civil Rights Trail also highlights the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement with specially created markers in Visit Baton Rouge and Washington Parish Tourism including the Bogalusa to Baton Rouge March, the Old State Capitol, Baton Rouge Sit Ins, and the Robert “Bob” Hicks House in Bogalusa. Our group is planning to promote southeast Louisiana at travel shows in New Jersey, Denver, Tupelo, and Hershey, PA. We are always working to bring visitors to our region.
