Visit St. Francisville invites to the Angola Prison Rodeo at Louisiana State Penitentiary every Sunday in October. The rodeo has been the site of the “Wildest Show in the South.” This unique event was started by inmates and employees of the state’s only maximum-security prison, once known as “The Bloodiest Prison in the World.” Spectators from all walks of life from nearly all corners of the globe come to hear great inmate bands, sample authentic Cajun and regional foods such as boudin, crawfish, and cracklins, shop affordable, high-quality arts and crafts from over 800 inmate artists and see a great rodeo. It's an event you will never forget.

Last week, members of the Southeast La GUMBO Group represented at FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) Show in Redmond, Oregon. Victoria Hughes and Cary Taylor of West Baton Rouge Convention & Visitors Bureau, Kathleen Abels of Visit Livingston Parish, and Devan Corbello of Visit St. Francisville spent the week talking to over one thousand attendees about what Southeast Louisiana has to offer RV travelers. They shared our cookbook filled with local recipes, and our famous Gumbo Seasoning packets with all who visited the booth. We look forward to seeing these travelers again when they visit our areas! As tourism leaders in southeast Louisiana, we meet on a regular basis to discuss plans to attract more visitors to our community. This month Washington Parish Tourism hosted the Gumbo Group at Bogue Chitto State Park. We had a great meeting and we appreciate to the hospitality of the Washington Parish Tourism Board. There are some events you can only find in Southeast Louisiana! For the month of August get off the traditional path. Visit St. Francisville on August 10 for the Dead of Locust Grove Plantation Cemetery, one of the many historic cemeteries in Louisiana and learn about its inhabitants. Then Tangi Tourism invites you to Cucuzza Day at the Independence Italian Cultural Museum on August 17. A Cucuzza is an Italian summer squash which was a staple for the local immigrants. These squash can grow up to 3 - 6 feet in length, sometimes growing up to 10 inches in just one day.
