Well it looks like the latest eruption is finishing off in the next day or two and the Blue Lagoon is open to visits. Weather has been problematic as it is often around this time so if you guys are travelling around keep your eye on the forecast and stay safe.

Well the 10th eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula started last night, it´s not a large one with the rift beeing around 3 km in length. The eruption is north of Grindavík and doesnt threaten the town at this time. Plumbing to run hotwater is in danger and might burst which could lead to lack of hotwater in the area but otherwise it looks like another meandering lava flow that will last most likely 2 weeks or so.

Well it looks like winter is starting to show, bringing a storm that will make traveling in the northern part of the country dangerous for the next 2 days, especially if people are travelling without winter tires.

Winter has arrived a bit early for a portion of the highlands. Namely the area around Landmannalaugar and the hiking paths that lead to Hrafntinnusker.

Eruption number 9 started around 9 pm. on the 22´nd of August. It is in the Sundahnúkar eruption zone close to Grindavík but at this time the location of the eruption does not threaten the town or the Blue Lagoon. Expect closings of the Blue Lagoon during eruption due to possible gas pollution.

Due to Glacial flood, Ring road (1) is closed between Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The road has been damaged but work is underway. Öldufellsleið F232 and Sólheimajökulsveg (221) have been closed. Due to this traffic on the south coast east bound or west will have to choose alternate travel routes for the next few days as the flood passes and the bridge can be inspected for damage.

Well so far the eruption in Sundahnúkagígaröð continues. The news is though that there seems to be a buildup of magma and ground is rising around the erupting crater. This could be an indication that another crack might open with new lava flow at any time so all travel in the area is forbidden due to risk of new eruptions starting.

The defensive wall on the northeast side of Grindavík had a slight overflow of lava in the last day but flow was minor and did not go far off the defensive wall as it came over.

What the next few days hold is difficult to say at this time but further eruption is expected at Sundahnúkagígaröð.

Well eruptions have started again around Grindavík. Not much danger to anything except infrastructure unless it reaches sea as that would create ash and fluor gasses. At this time though it seems very simular to the previous eruptions and should last a short time.

Well at this time we are expecting another spurt of volcanism on the Reykjanes peninsula. Most likely another short venting simular to the eruptions that have been ongoing lately. Hopefully they will open in a location that doesn´t endanger the village of Grindavík or the Blue Lagoon and the powerplant at Svartsengi but we will see what happens.

Hello everyone.

I have been a guide and a tour operator in Iceland for 14 years now. Through that time this site has always been somewhat neglected due to other work mostly. It was always the goal with this site to inform travelers of useful tips for travelling and safety and I will try to continue that in a more active manner. I have now joined with a newly formed company by the name Holiday Tours Iceland. I am looking forward to helping to build one of if not the best touring company in Iceland.
