HO'OMANA'O (Memories)
1994-2009 With hard work and perseverance the Tex Drive In got renovated, the garden developed into a must to visit and got an award for "Best Commercial Garden", the Malasadas became consistent in quality and famous. We built and opened Tex Pahala on the he Ka'u side of the Island and finally Mohala Pua, a garden center, which also featured gifts and tourist information. All did well until a large earthquake hit the region on October 15, 2006, Besides destroying equipment and merchandise, the rumble caused major damage on the buildings. We quickly learned that commercial damage was not covered by FEMA, and we were advised to try finding help at the SBA. We did, prepared piles of paper, submitted them and never heard from them.

In 2007 the recession started, banks closed accounts, people lost jobs as the hotels did not see any visitors. A very difficult time to navigate. Bank of Hawaii wanted our money but closed credit lines, suppliers wanted cash as they also had to deal with no more credit., all together a rollercoaster of misery. To keep the business going and people employed my son and I worked 12 hours a day, and finally decided to look at selling the businesses, which we did.

It was fun watching the Lei Day Parade in Las Vegas! Great drumming, Hawaiian and Pacific Island dancers, Keiki, at a very young age making the crowd cheer! Lots of people from all walks of life attended, and everyone was enjoying the performances.

It took me back for a minute to Hawaii, standing along the road in Waimea; watching the Aloha Parade. The Horses, with their Island Riders and flower decorations fascinated me.

Here in Las Vegas, Aloha was shown by all performers and visitors,. Mahalo to the organizers and performers for this amazing Lei Day Parade!🌸
