"The health of the ocean has direct impact on the way women live and work in the Seychelles" (... and everywhere!) http://www.unwomen.org/en/digital-library/multimedia/2017/6/photo-seychelles-women-in-ocean-conservation

The health of our oceans is declining. This threatens the lives, livelihood and food security of billions of people. For island communities and those living around oceans and seas, the risk are even greater. Recently, UN Women visited the island nation of Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean Rim region,

"The Power of Women and Art."
"Her grandma would draw with rice flour on the mud floor of their house."
Shalinee Kumari uses old techniques to paint the struggle of modern women's lives.
“I painted about women’s empowerment and global warming. Ganga Devi was my favorite artist and she painted trains, so I thought I can also paint about whatever I want. My teacher told me yes, you have a medium and modern tools, and you can paint your own art form.”

The work of Indian artist Shalinee Kumari, which is being shown at San Francisco's Asian Museum, promotes social change and women's empowerment.

On November 11, people in nations around the world remember the contributions of the veterans of war and conflict. Whether the United States’ Veterans Day, the Commonwealth’s Remembrance Day, and other nations’ Armistice Day, today is a day dedicated to honoring the courage and sacrifice of our veterans. This year, this day holds extra special significance as it marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

At A Mighty Girl, we are marking this day with a special blog post about the contributions of women in wartime. Although women’s roles are rarely mentioned, women have played an important part -- both in the military forces and at home -- in every major conflict, and their efforts deserve recognition. Sharing these books with your children will help you introduce them to many of these women's stories -- from the Rosie the Riveters of WWII stepping into vacated factory positions to the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) to the many women who serve in military forces today. We've also recommended several stories specifically geared towards Mighty Girls who have a parent serving in the military today.

So whether on Veterans Day or any time you'd like to honor the contributions of our veterans, consider sitting down with your children with one of these stories in hand. Together, you can explore the tales of the many brave women who should be remembered.

To learn how Moina Belle Michael made the red poppy into a symbol of remembrance for veterans around the world, we highly recommend the excellent picture book "The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and Her Tribute to Veterans" for ages 7 to 10 at https://www.amightygirl.com/the-poppy-lady

We've also shared the stories of 15 real-life women wartime heroes from throughout history in our blog post, "Spies, Medics, Soldiers, & Peacemakers: 15 Women Wartime Heroes You Should Know" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=11974
