They've Gone to Plaid Sailing and keeping it real We are just starting our sailing adventures with the recent purchase of our Tartan 37. Currently based in San Diego, California.

Learning a lot along the way and looking forward to lots of sun and surf.

No human visitors to the boat lately, but luckily the local sea life has been nice enough to stop by (from a safe distance of course!). Being under quarantine has given us a new appreciation of all the things we can see without leaving the boat, including a fishing frigatebird, a pair of mating sea turtles, curious dolphins, and jumping rays!

We had lots of whales to entertain us on our last leg to mainland. I had never seen a whale breach and it is truly a spectacular sight. The splash is so enormous!

The bird parade continues! We see brown bo***es a lot while we are out sailing. At Isla Isbela we got to see how they begin! They are such quirky fun characters. It's easy to imagine all the little dialogues and dramas going on between them.

Not to be outdone by the frigate birds, the Blue-Footed Bo***es have their own thing going on. It's maybe a tad more subtle, but still pretty eye grabbing. They have their own dance, which of course features the blue feet.

After a few night at Sea we arrived at this wondrous island, a national park and frigatebird nesting sanctuary. The male frigate birds were definitely out to impress! With big displays, dances, and interesting noises. Some of the females didn't seem to be impressed, but I was!

We had a nice, easy going passage from the Baja Peninsula over to Pacific Mexico. It took about 3 nights, 4 days to reach our destination of Isla Isabel. The wind was a bit on the light side for some of it, but we had some really awesome sailing at night. After 9 months aboard, I am definitely getting more comfortable on the boat and it's getting easier to enjoy passage time.

La Paz was decked out for the holiday season and feeling very festive with holiday events nearly every night. We had a great time reuniting with sailing friends we hadn't seen for a few hundred miles. We were also very happy to see family that flew in to meet us there. Once again we are having to tear ourselves away from La Paz, feeling very to tempted to stay "just one more week".

After leaving San Juanico our trip was a lot of dodging weather and squeezing in time at our favorite spots. A late season tropical system brought lots of rain and kept us hunkered down for a few days, but at the end we were rewarded with one of the brightest rainbows I have ever seen.

It's easier to go hiking in Baja with these cooler fall temps than when we stopped here in the summer. Plus recent rains have been adding a lot of green to the landscape!

We've been doing a fair bit of weather dodging lately, which makes me appreciate the days we have beautiful weather even more.

With the change in seasons the wind is coming more and more from the North than the South, which means we get to try out some different anchorages this season. This one had a great beach and regular visits from a pack of coyotes.

I love these little one-boat coves! Plus, this one had a hiking trail with awesome views. The landscape was very volcanic. We walked along a rocky spine that divided two bays along the coast.

Riding out a Norther in Puerto Don Juan, a hurricane hole in the northern Sea of Cortez. It was a couple days of consistently high winds. We saw speeds of 38 knots in our well protected anchorage. We read a lot of books, watched a lot of movies, and ate a lot of food, but survived with only a little bit of cabin fever.

We finally made it out of Penasco! It was a rough overnight trip to our next Anchorage, but we made it. We hoped to stay there a few days, but the weather had other ideas. With big winds from the north forecasted for the next few days we decided to find a spot with better protection. There's no arguing with the wind and waves, but at least we got to enjoy this spot for a little bit.

The autopilot is installed! This project took way longer than we thought it would, but we learned a lot of new skills. We had to remove the old autopilot, install a beefy shelf for the new equipment, fiberglass that shelf to the boat, mount the autopilot on the shelf, drill and attach the ram to the quadrant, and then wire the whole thing in. Whew. Now cleanup begins.

Currently working on boat projects, but dreaming about swimming through sea caves

Some days it's smooth sailing, other days it's less smooth. Either way, I can't wait to get back out there.

We are still working on our sea turtle identification skills, but love seeing sea turtles of all kinds when we are out sailing and snorkeling.

A video from our trip north. Nothing like snorkeling with sea lions to make you feel completely inept in the water. They move so gracefully.

Amazingly clear water at this snorkeling spot right off a big volcanic cliff. It was really hard to get a sense of depth in this area because the water was so clear.

From seascapes to historic places, we are enjoying a change of scenery in Loreto. First, we visited the mission in Loreto, which is the first one in the chain of missions that stretch north through California. I was most amazed with how trusting they are with those bells cords. I guess the Loretoans have way more self control. I was very tempted to pull that rope.

Later, we drove up a long winding road high into the mountains to visit San Javier mission.

We stopped by Punta Salinas on Isla San Jose to check out an abandoned salt panning operation. I would love to know what is turning those salt ponds pink.
