Go to Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club on Saturday for Pink Polo and enjoy pony rides, falcon shows, free children’s activities or just relax with a picnic. And the best part? It's all in aid of breast cancer awareness.

In keeping with the spirit of Ramdan, Radisson Blu hotels have launched this year's The Box Appeal. Simply collect a box from a Radisson Blu hotel in the UAE, Oman, Bahrain or Egypt, fill it with every-day items from a suggested list, return it to the hotel, and it will be given to those most in need. This year's appeal aims to reach 10,000 labourers across the UAE and will run between 15th August and 15th September.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, the Chief of Dubai Police, has joined Twitter - the first senior police official to do so, saying: "I strongly believe in social networking sites because many people might not have easy access to officials through other means and these [social networking] sites could be their only way."

Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding has signed a 4.6 billion Saudi riyals (Dh4.5bn) deal with Saudi Binladen Group to build the world's tallest tower in Jeddah.

The building will include a hotel, apartments and offices and be more than 1km tall, beating Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which stands at 828m.

So Dubai has officially retracted its proposed bid for the 2020 Olympics. However, a 2024 bid hasn't been ruled out. What do you think? Was it the right decision? Istanbul officially confirmed yesterday that it would bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. Rome, Madrid and Tokyo have already confirmed that they will also bid, and there are rumours that Dubai, Delhi and Durban will join the race. Where would you like to see the Olympics after Rio 2016? Could Dubai do it?

In the meantime, here's a great photo of Mohammed Khamis Khalaf, the last Emirati athlete to win a medal at the Paralympics, taking silver in Powerlifting in the 2008 Beijing Games.
