Dear Friends,

We need your urgent help.

The historic Stahl House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the most famous architectural homes in the world and a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, IS POTENTIALLY AT RISK!

For over 60 years, our iconic and beloved home has perched atop a dramatic cliff overlooking all of Los Angeles.

The hill upon which the Stahl house rests is fragile and set in a designated landslide area and earthquake zone by both the City of Los Angeles and the State of California. Numerous catastrophic slides have already damaged or destroyed other nearby homes.

So far we have been lucky, and the house has survived and has been available for the enjoyment of all Angelenos and architecture-lovers from around the world.

Shockingly, the City of Los Angeles has recently approved development of the lot directly below our house that would remove over 200 dump trucks of dirt from right below our historic dwelling and build enormous walls that are many multiples of what the building code allows. We believe that this presents a serious risk to the Stahl House.

WE HAVE APPEALED THE CITY'S ILL-CONCEIVED DECISION AND NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE TO HELP STOP THIS DEVELOPMENT.

Please urge the City Planning Commission to grant the Doheny Sunset Plaza Neighborhood Association's and our appeal of this decision. Please also urge our Councilmember, Nithya Raman, to support this appeal, as that will greatly increase our odds of success.

You can do so easily by filling out the forms below. The whole process will only take a couple of minutes of your time. Please also share if you can.

Thank you so much for helping us save this unique and irreplaceable cultural resource for generations to come.

Bruce & Shari Stahl

One of my favorite CSH architects is Craig Ellwood (CSH #16). It is rumored that Mr Ellwood was on of the architects that was interviewed by Mr Stahl to build his house. But Mr Ellwood is most famous for two other projects in Los Angeles. First he was the architect of the famous Chateau Marmont hotel's bungalows. Bungalow #3 is famous for having been where John Belushi died. Finally we have Art Center College of Design's bridge campus building. I have attached photos of all three locations in order. CSH #16, Bungalow #3 and Art Center respectively.

I was having a discussion about this building with someone the yesterday. Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power.

Designed by Albert C. Martin and Associates and completed in 1965, the seventeen-story Corporate International-style building rises from the center of an enormous reflecting pool punctuated by fountains.

I took this photo in 2017. Truly one of my favs.

Reflections on a Saturday afternoon.

On a tour yesterday the subject of “The seven totems of Los Angeles” came up. If you are not familiar, this comes from the Netflix series YOU. In the series it is said that if you see the seven totems, you cannot leave Los Angeles (as if you would want to). How many have you seen?

Here they are:

1. A roller blader in b***y shorts
2. A police helicopter
3. Two girl’s in same dress at the same event
4. A pack of coyotes
5. A dog in stroller
6. An off brand super hero (not on Hollywood Blvd)
7. A palm tree on fire

I have seen 6 of the seven.

This is very sad news. Buck Henry famous screenwriter, actor and Stahl House neighbor died yesterday. I met Mr Henry several times, he was a very sweet and kind man. He will be missed.

The comedy icon was also remembered for his work on "Heaven Can Wait" and "Get Smart."
