My Sister's Keeper Birth & Midwifery Services MEET THE MIDWIVES

Sister Kennasha
From my mother, grandmother and aunts, I learned the importance of sisterhood, unity and healing through laughter.
(20)

Because of the love for my communities and love for women and their children, I decided upon the field of midwifery. I understand that during pregnancy, a woman imparts her thoughts, feelings and love while the baby is yet growing in the womb. Women are the first to feel their child’s first movements thus creating a rhythmic connection for both mom and baby. Father’s have the privilege of being pr

oviders and a stable back bone for the family. His presence alone is an integral part of not only the pregnancy but the labor and delivery. These monumental events set the ground work for lasting connections for the entire family. I believe that pregnancy and birth are one of the most important and influential times in a woman's life. This moment encompasses a time of self-discovery, enlightenment and an opportunity to become more empowered as a woman, as a mother, and as a human being. With that being said, it is during this time that one may feel most vulnerable, and thus I encourage women to seek out understanding and support during this life-changing event. I continue to make it a priority to listen, acknowledge and nurture the feelings of all of my clients. I believe that if freedom and empowerment are encouraged during the birth, as well as if adequate support and education are provided, we can inspire the healthy and satisfying birth desired and the entire family can become more empowered during the process. Sister Teree
Of all of the the things I love about God, His artistry and creative nature have to be one of my favorites. Here He designed this woman to grow and carry her child, to labor for that which she has guarded in her womb, and to birth and bring forth something He spoke life and purpose to long, long ago. And then, this baby brought earthside is again nourished by the one who carried him. What an amazingly powerful design. You, sister, were born to do this. Everything you need is already on the inside of you. I am honored to be a stage hand in your journey to one of the most powerful ministries there is....motherhood. I believe that every woman should have easy access to quality midwifery care, regardless of her demographic background. I am on a mission to see this come to fruition. My heartbeat is to eliminate racial disparities in birth outcomes among African American women and babies. Making prenatal care easily accessible to every woman is essential in seeing this change come to fruition. Kennasha and I have the pleasure of being able to serve clients in both English and Spanish, and we take pride in being able to minister to women in their native language. I witnessed my first birth at the age of 15, and some 12 years later it is even more exhilarating than it was the first time! I find myself marveling at the very intricate handiwork of Christ, not only as the author of creativity, but as my father. The sight of a mother allowing her body to labor and work according to its perfect design to bring forth life is indescribably humbling. And the harvest....oh what a harvest! There is this moment, when a mother takes that first look into the eyes of her child, when a dad marvels at the strength of this woman who has just birthed their baby, when this tiny unadulterated miracle happens. Time stops...just for a moment, and a family is born. I say, catching babies is like shaking hands with God, over and over again.

WE, meaning parents and guardians, are responsible for their knowledge of such things! ✊🏾

“Don’t cry, little baby....I got you.”
Hearing my daughter whisper these words over her baby remind me of the times that those very words were all I could muster to whisper over my children. Motherhood is indeed the dance of the perfectly imperfect and all the grace that comes alongside of that. Sometimes my motherhood looks like perfectly crafted meals for tiny hungry humans. But sometimes my motherhood looks like the undone me with messy hair, no bra, in nothing more than my panties cradling tiny people and whispering “Don’t cry, little baby....I got you.” And you know what....no matter what my portrait of motherhood looks like today....in this moment.....it is beautiful. And I am enough. I am certain that in all of my perfect imperfection, I am loved by a perfect Savior who sees me....messy hair, underwear and all....and says “Don’t worry....I got you.”

This is Black History!!!!

We honor you, Mama Jennie Joseph

11/07/2020

The FIRST and ONLY BLACK OWNED nationally accredited private midwifery training school in the United States of America.

Jennie Joseph

We all reap because of what you sow.

This is the face of disbelief- of being bone-tired and weary; the face of ‘how long?’ and ‘how much more?’; the face of ‘when will this end?’ ...... Ms. Willow, my faithful girl, my dependable companion, who stoically weathers every storm with me, got to be the one today as the two of us quietly absorbed and digested the gargantuan news that, yes, Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery is now accredited by MEAC. It took all day..... allllllll day......to realize that it was real. That my direct-entry midwifery training school is the FIRST and ONLY Black-owned and nationally-accredited private midwifery training school in the United States of America. It took all day.......alllllllll day to figure out what to say, what to do, even how to BE, about that. It took all day. Just as it has taken 5 years to reach accreditation, 10 years of operating a midwifery school, 17 years of running a free- standing birthing center and Easy Access Clinic, 25 years since starting a home birth practice, 31 years since moving to the US and nearly 40 years since certification as a British-trained midwife. It took all day to acknowledge that after allllllll these years this is just the beginning. If anyone was wondering what drives me - it is this! I am about scale, I am about volume, I am about reaching as many as I can - there is no time to lose. I am in the business of saving lives. This opens a pathway for midwives of color to again become autonomous community providers, to address and redress the historical, structural and institutional inequities that continue to decimate Black and indigenous people, and to restore trusted birth workers to the heart of their communities once again.

22/06/2020

We see you. We’ve seen you stand with her and steady her. We’ve seen you guard her and take each breath with her. We’ve watched you be the voice of reason and the silent pillar of strength. We’ve witnessed you chase down fear and call out the champion in her. You fought sleeplessness to watch over her. She heard your voice when she didn’t hear ours, and you reminded her that she could even when she thought she was at the end of her rope. And she did. And you were there, every step of the way. We honor every dad who has answered the call to fatherhood. We need you, we salute you, we love you. Happy Father’s Day🧔🏾🧔🏻🧔🏿🧔🏼🧔🏽

The TRUTH of the matter is that racism and the mistreatment of Black Americans started years before . Wet nurses in slavery were FORCED to nurse their “master’s” children before their own. Often times the children of Black slaves went malnourished and neglected for months on end. While generations of midwives have advocated to “normalize breastfeeding” I guarantee this is not what we ever had in mind.

01/06/2020

On Saturday morning my grandson was born at Gentle Beginnings Birth Center. We cried, we laughed, and we celebrated his arrival. It was nothing short of a miracle from start to finish. After the realization of our blessing, we calmed and my husband led us in prayer 🙏🏾

Through prayer he acknowledged our gratefulness to God for this child but also prayed for this little BLACK BOY who was born to a world that will see his skin FIRST and ask questions later 👦🏽❤️

We are STILL fighting the same fight and STILL angered at the disparities that plague us. BLACK LIVES MATTER! This child matters. His father matters. His grandfather matters. In Jesus Name, their destiny will not be determined by the color of their skin! 💪🏾
I declare life.
I declare truth.
I declare wisdom.
I declare rest.
And in the meantime I’m Rooting for Everybody Black ✊🏾

We are OVERJOYED to see the faithfulness of God's promises manifested in and through Abide!!!! Cessilye....this is only the beginning of the harvest of your "Yes, Lord".

2016 - Abide was a figment of our imagination. A Facebook post that read "I wonder what it would look like to have a birth center in the hood?"

2017 - Abide was registered with the state as a non profit organization.

2018 - Abide provided some out of hospital midwifery support and childbirth education.

2019 - Abide stepped into its purpose and with laser sharp focus began reaching our goals by offering resources specifically for the community of South Dallas such as Childbirth Education led by Althea Hurd with , led by Amanda Ramirez of along with mandatory trainings in Cultural Humility and Diversity led by and Implicit Bias trainings led by for staff and volunteers. Additionally we hired our office manager Bri Davila who brings more to this organization than we could have ever asked for.

2020 - Abide signed a three year lease on a property on MLK in the heart of Sunny South D, expanded our team by bringing on midwife and our Clinic Director and just yesterday we had our beautiful sign installed *logo by with
And

We could go on. What you see in these images are the fruit of our labor. This is what it looks like to be unafraid to dream big. We know the problems that we face are real. Well, so are the solutions and we are determined to bring additional healing to our community along the way.

It is always fun running into "my babies" and their mothers. This sweet boy. I ran into him and his ma in downtown Funky Town. She reintroduced him to me. She said "Do you remember Mama T? She was there the day you were born. Do you remember your midwife mama?" He stared me straight in my eyes for 20 seconds, and then reached out for me. He embraced me, just like this, for an uninterrupted 2 minutes. Then he pulled back, just long enough to look me in the eyes again, and went back to his embrace. We inhaled and exhaled deep breaths of unified gratitude. He remembered me... I could FEEL it. His tiny soul remembered!

Today My Sister's Keeper Birth & Midwifery Services takes pause to honor the incredible ministry of Pastors Michael and Natalie Todd at Transformation Church. This ministry is and continues to be such a blessing to us. I always jokingly say that Pastor Mike is really Pastor Michael Todd, M.D. (midwife in disguise). He is undoubtedly a spiritual midwife of sorts, as he has helped me to labor and transition through many a life season. Kennasha and I submitted ourselves and our practice to the Lord at its inception. We have committed to allowing Him to set and change the pace as He sees fit...and He has been oh so faithful. I am able to pour into each and every one of you, not be cause I am that good, but because He is....and because I have incredible sources of spiritual leadership pouring into me.
Pastors Michael and Natalie, I am indeed in a posture of profound gratitude. Eucharisteo. Somewhere deep in the heart of Texas, there are mommies and babies reaping the harvest of your unwavering "Yes, Lord." And so, this midwife will continue to join her "Yes, Lord" with yours as we continue to Re.Present Christ to the lost and found for transformation in Christ.

All My Love,
Tereé

She will be 3 next month.
THREE.
I remember looking into her eyes for the very first time. She was my wildest dreams come to fruition. She was not my introduction to motherhood, but she was the redefining, redemptive gift I fell madly in love with the moment I birthed her. The moment I became mother to a daughter changed me forever. It called me to a new level of womanhood I had not yet tapped into. And even today... almost three years later...I am falling more and more in love with her, and with the woman that I've become, than I ever could have imagined.
We have this thing we say to each other, My Girl and I....
I am bold. I am beautiful. I am brave. I am strong. I am confident. I am more than enough...because He is more than enough!

Catherine has the faith to move mountains. Not only does she acknowledge God in all her ways, but she is confident in herself, her husband and the abilities of her birth team. Yes, she did the research and asked all the questions but when it came down to it she would simply declare, “Me and Jesus have an understanding” i.e. Jesus will take care of me. She was at peace.

As the months passed our work relationship turned into a true friendship. Her husband rarely missed an appointment and between the four of us, our time became a mixture of storytelling and comedic moments. Catherine was compliant with most things - outside of her cravings for ice cream and lack of exercise. When we reminded her of healthier choices, we were reminded that she and Jesus had an understanding. As her midwives and believers in God, she literally had us stumped 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Her labor was absolutely flawless and a breathtaking display of God’s favor. It was long enough for her to find her stride but short enough to keep her motivated and focused. Her husband was the ebb to her flow while their doula, Courtney L Butts. caressed the waves. Upon Catherine’s instruction, it was time to bring their princess earth-side and that’s exactly what we did. Her husband supported her from behind while I crouched in wait. Then, out came our dearest Ella. She, like the miracle of life, was perfect - and remains so. It happened just as God told Catherine it would.

As your midwives, sisters and friends, we adore you and your faith. Thank you for walking in His promises and allowing us to witness the making of a miracle.

20K Campaign for Infant and Maternal Mortality organized by My Sisters Keeper Birth Midwifery Services

In honor of Black History Month, we are so excited to announce the launch of our "20k Campaign for Infant and Maternal Mortality".

According to research, African American women are nearly four times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications than are white women. African American women are also two to three times more likely to experience preterm birth, and three times more likely to give birth to a low birthweight infant. African American infants are about 230 percent more likely than white infants to die before their first birthdays.
Our heartbeat is to make exceptional prenatal care accessible to EVERY woman, regardless of her demographic background; and to eliminate the racial disparity in birth outcomes among African American women and their babies.

The launch of our February 20K Campaign for Infant and Maternal Mortality is a collaborative effort to eliminate the racial disparity in birth outcomes among African American women and their babies. Every financial contribution of this campaign goes toward making culturally competent midwifery care and birth services easily accessible to women of color and their babies. This includes, but is not limited to:

Preconception counseling
Prenatal care
Intrapartum care (labor and delivery)
Postpartum care
Newborn care

This work is personal for us....this advocating for Black mothers and Black babies and Black families. Black History is not only a celebration of how far we’ve come, but it is the acknowledgement that we are still in the fight of our lives. These are our babies, our sisters, our aunties, our brothers, our uncles, our papis, and madeas. THIS. IS. US. The conversation cannot end now. It cannot end here. We are linking arms and changing the course of Black History from right where we stand.

T. Manning is our sista from another mista! She is down to earth, honest, funny and “real” in all the best ways! From the beginning she was determined and committed to birthing her baby out of the hospital. She desired a water birth and she wanted her family to be there to witness the experience.
With her eldest, she was very young. She went to her prenatal visits the way she was supposed to. She showed up at the hospital the way she was supposed to. She pushed out her baby the way she was supposed to. In this case, it was an uncomplicated story. But the experience wasn’t empowering. She never felt in control or that she had a say so in the process. She wasn’t given any options. She did the deed and the result was a healthy baby boy but still, this time around, she longed for something different!
As the midwives of My Sister’s Keeper, we were grateful for our time with her. Not only did she experience birth in its natural form, but she allowed Lane B Photography into her birth space. She wanted to share her experiences with other women of color. She wanted to document her truth and remember.
Sadly, African-American women aren’t often seen doing it “the natural way”. But with current statistics, we have to consider other options for maternal care, birth and postpartum care. In America, Black women are 4X times more likely to die in childbirth than white women! IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES, WITH LOW-RISK PREGNANCIES, IT IS SAFER (and more cost effective) TO BIRTH OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL WITH A LICENSED MIDWIFE. T. Manning was no exception.
While in labor, there were moments that she loved and laughed - others she didn’t enjoy as much. Unmedicated birth can be painful but rarely is it unbearable. She never gave up. She never gave in. To this day she is GRATEFUL for the journey and proudly boasts about her birth experience!! Her family was present. Her doulas, Freya Mórani Diop and Ifayemi Nkoyo Binah were there. Her midwives were there. Her photographer was there and captured it all! She was courageous and confident and was blessed to receive all she had been praying for!! 💪🏾

We love you T.Manning - our sister and our friend ❤️❤️

Our Story

MEET THE MIDWIVES Sister Kennasha

My name is Kennasha Jones, and I am a licensed midwife in the State of Texas, USA. While midwifery is my career, more than that, I consider it a ministry. I feel there is an unmatched beauty in midwifery, with distinct qualities that belong to “the midwife” that include compassion, empathy, tenderness, patience and unconditional love. Midwifery provides me the opportunity to serve women and their families during what is one of the most intimate and life-changing events in our lives. I believe the monumental miracle of a new birth can set the groundwork for lasting connections for the entire family, which is supported and encouraged when a midwife is welcomed into the birth place.

I recognize that during pregnancy a mother imparts her thoughts, feelings and love to the baby growing in her womb. She is the first to feel her child’s movements, thus creating a rhythmic connection for both the woman and the growing child. I consider pregnancy and birth to be one of the most important and influential times in a woman’s life. This period encompasses a time of self-discovery, enlightenment, and an opportunity to become more empowered as a woman, as a mother, and as a human being.

That being said, it is during this time that one may feel most vulnerable. I encourage women to seek out understanding and support during this life-changing event. As a midwife, I make it a priority to listen, acknowledge and nurture the feelings of our clients. I believe that if empowerment is encouraged during the birth, as well as adequate support and education provided during the pregnancy, we can inspire and assist in a healthy, satisfying birth experience.
