Also known as "quartet music", the genre relied heavily on emotional performance and aesthetic pleasure and took on various roles in the light of the political and social culture of 19th century Southern America.

Although no one really knows the exact origin of the slide-guitar, its beginnings are traced to the young Hawaiian tennager, Joseph Kekuku who in the 1880s imitated the human voice by sliding a metal object along the strings of his steel guitar.
It was in the 1900s that the slide-guitar style expanded in to the American market, producing an element now synonymous with Blues music. “Father of the Blues”, W.C Handy recalls his first experience with slide guitar was observing a performer playing with a knife while awaiting a train at Tutwiler railway station in Mississippi in 1903 (Visit Mississippi).
Although its origin story is unclear, the element is still popular and is heard today in Blues music.
