For my London/UK based friends, I came across this wonderful club, YAC, The Young Archaeologists Club. They run sessions around the country for tweens and another one for teens. They focus on a different area of archaeology and history each month, today it was medieval medicine and they made pomanders to ward of illness and smell nice as London would have smelled horrific in the 1400s! I'm trying to find out what they put inside, nutmeg, mint and something that starts with a is all I've got so far!

Now I'm wondering if this is something that would be good to make with kids on a tour... Could be fun! X

(Also, it's very chilly today!)

And these two, also casts of Michelangelo statues, are just too cool for school.

That's his David of Goliath fame on the right, and Lorenzo de Medici, grandson of Lorenzo the Magnificent, on the left.

The V&A is an amazing treasure house. Worth a visit x

I'm preparing a Raphael and Michelangelo tour at the V&A and am covering this smallish cast of a statue now in the Hermitage of a crouching boy, made by Michelangelo in the 1530s. One of those lovely statues that kind of forces you to walk round it. You can see why he's considered such an amazing sculptor. It's fabulous.

And on a kids tour, I'd be getting them to copy his pose. Might get the grown ups to try too!

I'm clinging on to Christmas! So sharing this, with three lovely London things: our beautiful 🎄 - gifted by the city of Oslo to us, which they have done every year since 1947 in gratitude for British support to Norway during the Second World War (Thank you Oslo, and a reminder of the need for friendship between nations). Nelson's column and in the distance Big Ben.

I do love the simplicity of that tree, and what it stands for. X

Hanging out at the Royal Academy with my lovely parents today, checking out the wonderful Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo exhibition (... The drawings, 😍🤯). Look at that sky! It's such a gorgeous place - quiet, calm, beautiful architecture and art. It was a lovely outing. And I think would be a great place for some kids tours, I'm a-thinking x

Happy New Year!!!

I reckon that the year to come will have some good bits that work, some bad bits that don't work, some bits that won't work together, and some bits that flow well. But all together it'll be beautiful. A bit like this 🕷️ 🕸️ spider's web.

This clever little spider wove her web right next to a light, so not only will she eat this winter, her web looks beautiful, all lit up.

Wishing you all the strength to navigate the good and the bad this year, and hope you notice and enjoy the small and beautiful things x

I had the great privilege of leading a tour of the National Gallery before it opened today. It is quite magical to be there on your own, as the lights come on when you enter a room and it's just you and the painting.

It's New Year's Eve so I tried to link the paintings to New Years Resolutions or thoughts for the year ahead. Here are some of them (to see the paintings you'll have to go to the gallery or look up the paintings on the gallery website, or book a tour!).

Let me know if you have anything to add or any other ideas!

Margarito of Arezzo, the Virgin and Child: Share your knowledge.
Uc***lo: the Battle of San Romano: make sure you've always got the bigger army (or be prepared).
Jan van Eyck, The Arnolfini Portrait: appreciate what you have while you have it.
Titian, Bacchus and Ariadne: make time to have fun
Turner, The Fighting Teneraire: be ready for change, it's inevitable.
Any Monet: be in the present.

What are your New Year Resolutions?

Happy New Year! X

What's your favourite underground line?

You'll find most Londoners have a favourite. Mine is the Bakerloo line. It's the most rickety and most in need of an upgrade (I think, am I wrong?). I've heard a rumour they are going to upgrade it and then I'll be a little sad as it feels very old fashioned and like you're going back in time a bit. I'd miss it. But for now it's old and dusty and evocative. Would love to hear what your favourite line is x

Only a couple of days left, but if you have the chance, or if they come back, or to a theatre near you, this was fabulous. The 9 year old loved it and kept her attention for the full hour and a half or so, and I had tears in my eyes for most of it.

We were, as you can see, right at the back but the view was great, and to be honest I'll buy these seats again, great views at a fairly affordable price.

And wow, the skill, stamina and beauty of the athletes on the stage. Really impressive. And lots of humour. It was really great x

Quite taken with the decorations on one of the Christmas trees at the Tower of London today. They are baubles of some of the exotic animals in the Royal Menagerie that used to be at the Tower, basically the king's private zoo. Can you find a lion, a monkey and an elephant? x

There have been some gorgeous days for a boat trip on the Thames this Christmas. The Uber commuter boats are great, you can tap in and out with a contactless card. I'd recommend going early, it'll be busy between now and New Year, and hopefully get a seat outside to see the sites. So wrap up warm! X

Hoping you had a lovely day whatever you got up to x

What advent calendar did you get this year?

So of course we have the chocolate advent calendar, there's no escaping it, but I like an old fashioned one too and this one from the National Gallery has, I think become my favourite. It's a mini work of art filled with even smaller works of art. Good for kids to get to know some art, and some good revision for me. What's not to love?!

I'll be checking out the National Gallery's advent calendar next year, but let me know if you have any recommendations x

One of the best views in London! Big Ben framed by the London Eye. All lit up! 😍

I need to work out how I can make Big Ben a bit bigger. But this is good enough.

It's taken from the south side of Waterloo Bridge, also lovely to walk over as it has great views.

This always makes me smile! X

🐻🐻🐻 We checked out the Paddington Bear Experience at County Hall and it is lovely! So magical, interactive, with actors - we met Mrs Brown, Mrs Bird and of course Paddington. We went inside the house in Windsor Gardens and the jungle of Peru. It's for younger kids, my 9 year old found it enchanting. It's not cheap but if you fancy something a bit different I recommend it! Ask if you have any questions! 🍊🍊🍊
