Founded in 1421, it is to a city in 1508 by the king, Manuel 1.
Funchal comes from "funcho" word wich means fennel in Portuguese. Indeed, the first portuguese had discovered the island in the fifteen century, wild fennel grew abundantly in place of the current city.
