Wandering Peso Wandering Peso is our overland journey to explore Mexico, Central America and South America in our 1989 Mitsubishi Delica Starwagon (L300).

Wandering Peso is our life long dream of stepping off the edge of what society expects and tells us what our lives should look like into a place where we create the path and journey to live to our fullest potential. It is, in the art of wandering, a journey to discover the world and open doors to understand where we fit in it.

When a North Bay couple embarked on the journey of a lifetime, they had no idea that their dream vacation would end a nightmare: banished into the Argentinean desert, left to their own devices to obtain food and water amid a global pandemic.

Sunrise vibes for the win today! ⁣

Reminding ourselves that the sun still rises and sets on the daily regardless of what’s happening in the world. Rationality and common sense are the best proactive tools we have for navigating the rapidly changing situation we all find ourselves in. A shout out to all our fellow travelers as we all figure out what the hell to do. ⁣

Please keep updates grounded in facts with credible sources. It’s hard enough as it is. ⁣

Outside looking in overlanding looks like it’s always fun and adventure, but problems happen just like in our life back home. It’s just that sometimes the problems we face on the road are compounded by language barriers, finding space to work or someone competent and trustworthy, or the availability of parts etc, etc. We know we are not alone in that struggle and we were lucky enough to meet Sergio and Jasna who have an awesome workshop in Coyhaique when we noticed a major coolant leak right before we were heading to a really remote backcountry route. ⁣

The silver lining in what could have been a really stressful situation is that we have made two awesome new friends and we were able to work on Peso at our pace and in a rad space. The ever so elusive Delica parts proved to be a challenge as usual, but we were able to find OEM Hyundai parts that bolted in. Hooray! ⁣

In the downtime of waiting on the parts to arrive we cranked out almost two years of extra service maintenance and even got the front bumper mount on the chassis welded back together again. ⁣

Now that’s a tight squeeze!!! ⁣

This river crossing might seem unassuming, but on the other side of those logs is a 30 foot ravine into the mountain side. 😂💪 The way back we couldn’t even see the logs because the water level rose so much. 🙈⁣

While seeking out an unknown backcountry trek, we ended up on the gnarliest and most dangerous off road route of our trip. ⁣

We decided to drive further up the remanentes of a road just beyond a big river crossing to see how far we could go. White knuckled and under pressure, we crossed 7 rivers and a handful of very sketchy old log bridges along the way. Any mistake could have cost us the van rolling down a cliff edge. ⁣

After the last steep and stressful river crossing Colin threw in the towel and we found a rad camp spot where we planned to start the trek the next day. ⁣

Overnight, Patagonia delivered a huge rainfall and snow storm; much bigger than forecasted. We woke in the morning to swollen rivers, waterfalls that popped up overnight and more rain on the way. ⁣

The 7 white knuckle river crossings were now more life threatening. The log bridges that were above water before are now underwater and we couldn’t see any of the tracks we took the day before because of how much water was flowing. ⁣

Just to give some perspective, the last river out was over a meter deep and on the drive in it was only 6 cm deep!! One of the locals we saw collecting firewood on the other side said we are lucky we came out when we did otherwise we might have been stuck until next summer!! ⁣

Needless to say our expected backpacking trip ended up being a wild ride and one we hope not to repeat on this journey again!! ⁣

Glad to report the only casualties are a crushed front bumper and trim piece. In hindsight we are bummed we don’t have any footage on the way out, but instamedia shots were not really at the forefront of our minds. 🤯⁣

Peso flexing and twerking in the backcountry of some 4x4 adventure route so we could go backpacking. We decided to undertake this journey whilst a big storm (unbeknownst to us) was a brewing! It certainly made for a quick, slippery and intense return trip. ⁣😬😬😬🤯😱

This was on the way up and just the beginning. To the right is a 30 meter drop off with some logs in place... I guess to make you feel better?! The rivers were small and the crossings were hairy, but doable. On the way back the 5cm river had grown to 1 meter in depth just to give you an idea of how quick the track can change over night. ⁣

Patagonia sunsets are unreal. ⁣

We hiked through valleys, forged some freezing cold rivers and wandered through ancient native forests. Eventually we found ourselves on the edge of this glacial lake. ⁣

Vale la pena.⁣

This is it folks. The place we have been dreaming about.⁣

P.A.T.A.G.O.N.I.A.⁣

Land of the wild places, Torres that touch the sky, glaciers that are brighter blue than you can imagine, rivers full of giant salmon and trout, and ancient forests with insects and critters even Darwin couldn’t dream up.⁣

And did we mention there is a whole lot of people. It has taken some time to figure it out, but to see the wild Patagonia we have been dreaming about all this time requires a lot of really remote off-roading, getting lost and staying off of the famed and now very busy Carretera Austral. That being said, this off roading adventure is quite rough on Peso and we are in the shop due to a coolant leak from the water pump and the front bumper sheared off at the frame; probably from pushing Peso’s limits on all these two tracks👊🏼!⁣

We are taking advantage of the down time (waiting on parts...) to do as much maintenance as possible on the beast. This list is dizzyingly long and we won’t bore you with the details, but she is really going to be ready to get some mud on her flaps. 💪⁣

We also did a presentation at the NOLS headquarters and picked up a lot of amazing beta from the local instructors to take our adventure to places that we’ve never heard of let alone could even find on a map. We are chopping at the bit to get back on the road again!

When beetles attack! Volume up; commentary is good golden. Not sure if it’s as funny to others as us, but we’re still laughing. This beetle was easily 5”(13cm) long and flew straight in Lucia’s face.

Often times it’s the small moments that are the ones that matter most. We found this kid in the middle of an epic adventure; as natural as can be in a space that we as adults try so hard to get back to. Pure innocence, joy, no judgment and a bucket on your head conquering the unknown.

Happy Day of Thanks to our friends and family up north. We are grateful to be here exploring Peru and send love and gratitude to all those that we have met along the way, to those that have supported us and to those who have cheered us on! Today we are full up on life!

White coral sand beaches, red sand beaches and lava lakes.

Terrestrial iguana spikes ready for battle to defend their territory.

A flightless cormorant drying out it’s small wings. It’s the only species that has lost the ability to fly. So funny to watch them dry their wings! 😂

Marine iguana shedding its skin and looking fierce. Even though they are so docile and chill.

Sally Lightfoot crabs on brilliant red display. It’s part of their life cycle. The older they get the brighter red they become. Goes against all rules of camouflage, but these guys are super fast!

These giants are so impressive to see in the wild. They weigh in between 100-800lbs. After 25 years, the rings on their back lose track of time so it’s tricky to pin point how old they are exactly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It also takes 25 years before they reach maturity. The males have to court the female in the highlands which is a 10-30km trek from the lowlands and eventually position himself to get on her back. His belly has a depression that fits the shape of the females shell. It’s such a production to get into position. It could take all day and if he miscalculates his spot, the female will leave and he’ll lose his opportunity. 🤦🏼‍♂️

A volcanic wonderland. Forged from hot magma and volcanic eruptions. Some of the youngest land on Earth. The diversity and variation of species found on each island is fascinating. Interestingly, there are very few mammals. This is a reptilian and avian paradise.

We heard many people say it looks like a moonscape. We’ve never been to the moon so we can’t say for sure, but we’re pretty sure it doesn’t look like the moon. But we can assure you that this is what our Earth really looks like. And it’s breathtakingly stunning and perfectly untouched.
