The letters "F," "R," and "M" in the surnames of the people of Romblon have a history that spans over one hundred years from the Spanish period.

On November 21, 1849, Spanish Captain and Governor General Narciso Claverรญa y Zaldรบa issued a decree mandating that all Filipinos should choose a surname. The adoption of new surnames was necessary for the efficient implementation of census and taxation processes, as well as to monitor unusual or unauthorized migration throughout the Philippines. The decree was accompanied by a 141-page book called the "๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐˜€" (Alphabetical Catalogue of Surnames), which was used to distribute surnames based on geographical locations.

The Catรกlogo alfabรฉtico de apellidos (English: Alphabetical Catalog of Surnames) is a book of surnames that was published in colonial-era Philippines after a decree for the systematic distribution of family names and the implementation of the Spanish naming system.

Per the decree, a copy of the catalog was mandated to be circulated to the provincial leaders throughout the archipelago. A specific number of surnames, based on the population, were sent to the parish priests of each barangay. Subsequently, the leaders of each barangay, along with other town officials, oversaw the process as the head of each family or the eldest member selected a surname. Several groups were also exempted from having to choose new surnames.

Sibuyan natives received most surnames starting with "R." Surnames beginning with "F" are common in Banton, Corcuera, and Concepcion. Friars tore pages with "F" surnames from the "Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos" and posted them on church doors, forcing natives of Banton, Corcuera, and Concepcion to adopt them. The letter "M" surname was dedicated to the people of the Romblon and Badajoz (now San Agustin).

How interesting our history is, isn't it?

Hey friend, where exactly is Romblon? Is it in the Visayas? What language do they speak there?

Romblon (rom-BLOHN), or the Province of Romblon, is an archipelagic province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region. It is strategically located at the center of the Philippine archipelago and serves as the gateway to the Visayas and Southern Luzon Region.

Its main components include Romblon, Romblon - an archipelagic municipality and capital; Tablas, the largest island, encompassing the nine municipalities (including Odiongan); Sibuyan with its three towns (San Fernando, the largest among the municipalities in terms of total land area), Magdiwang and Cajidiocan); as well as the smaller island municipalities of Corcuera, Banton, Concepcion, San Jose.

The province lies south of Marinduque and Quezon, east of Oriental Mindoro, north of Aklan and Capiz, and west of Masbate.

The inhabitants of Romblon are divided into three ethnolinguistic groups: Romblomanon, Onhan and Asi.

Romblomanon is mainly spoken in Romblon island, and Sibuyan Island, and the town of San Agustin in Tablas. Onhan is mainly spoken in the southern part of Tablas and San Jose. The northwestern part of Tablas Island, as well as the islands municipalities of Corcuera, Banton, and Concepcion or Maghali Islands, speaks the Asi language.

โ–ถ๏ธRomblon was separated from the jurisdiction of Arevalo (Iloilo) and annexed to Capiz, when the province was created in 1716.

โ–ถ๏ธThe province underwent various political reorganizations in the nineteenth century.

โ–ถ๏ธIn 1853, the islands were organized into a politico-military commandancia ("sub-province" in English) administered from Capiz and continued to be so until the end of the Spanish rule in 1898. As a sub-province, Romblon was under an army officer with the rank of captain. The town of Romblon was its capital and the other municipalities were Azagra, Badajos (now San Agustin), Banton, Cajidiocan, Corcuera, Looc, Magallanes (now Magdiwang), Odiongan, Despujols (now San Andres) and Santa Fe.

โ–ถ๏ธOn March 16, 1901, Romblon (Romblon Foundation Day) was created as a regular province. Still, due to its insufficient economy to sustain a provincial government, it became re-absorbed into Capiz on July 2, 1907, under Act No. 1665. Romblon was reestablished as a separate province under Act No. 2724 on December 7, 1917.

โ–ถ๏ธThe entire province was reorganized by abolishing existing towns and establishing four municipalities, namely Tablas, Romblon, Maghali, and Sibuyan, through Commonwealth Act No. 581 which was enacted without executive approval on June 8, 1940.
