One year ago today the Arecibo Observatory collapsed in gut-wrenching fashion. One of the world's most iconic observatories, Arecibo was an enormous 305 meter radio telescope dish built into a natural sinkhole on the island of Puerto Rico. Operated by the University of Central Florida, the observatory was used for projects like near Earth object (NEO) detection, incoming missile detection, and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). The iconic dish helped make the facility famous and was featured in movies such as the 1995 James Bond film Goldeneye and the 1997 sci fi film Contact based on the Carl Sagan novel of the same name. Rest in Peace Arecibo!! Video Credit: Arecibo Observatory, US National Science Foundation
