Western Lens Photography and Resolute Sets Sail Follow Erik, Meagan and Nikka as they sail their boat Cascade 36 Cutter in Resolute Sets Sail on youtube
(1)

One blistery winter morning four years ago, Erik and Meagan stumbled onto a plan... two boats, several uninsured surgeries, countless unforgettable friendships, and a whole lot of work later they, along with their furry companion, Nikka, finally sailed out under the Golden Gate Bridge and turned left. Traveling South along the west coast of the Americas, and then on to ...? Your guess is as good a

s theirs, maybe they’ll sail over to Hawaii, maybe sail around the world. They once heard a wise man say “routine is the time killer,” and they took it to heart. They are sailing the Pacific Ocean attempting to live every day with their eyes open and minds engaged. For the first time living each day excited about the possibility of tomorrow instead of dreading or trying to control it. Follow them along on their journey and share in their joys and challenges and see where their crazy sailing adventure lands them in their youtube series Resolute Sets Sail.

Stumbled across this wonderful blog about sailing cheaply and on a minimal budget. Not simply sailing but living life in general with less "more". Great stories backed up with dream-inducing photos. Check it out http://www.artofhookie.org/

Listen to our interview with Linus at Slow Boat Sailing Podcast http://preview.tinyurl.com/h4uplkz

Been awhile since we made any updates. Winter has set in here in the cold white north and we have not been getting the boat out. To listen to our interview where we discuss the two ocean crossings and our future plans for beeing here in Alaska, click on the link and follow the iTunes or stitcher links. I believe we start talking around 20 minutes in or something like that! Cheers and thanks for listening...

A glimpse into the calmness and solitude of traveling the oceans. Our experience in the middle of the Pacific High was serene. Glassy waters with a nearly imperceptible swell. Nothing to do but wait for the next puff signaling a resurgence of the wind and watch the curious fish swimming around the boat. Sometimes it's nice to put oneself back there when life's waters seem much less tranquil.

Plucking the mast (Ep. 13) Resolute Sets Sail

Episode 13 is finally out!! Sorry for the long wait.

In this episode: We enter a local beer can race only to discover that due to high winds we will be racing only one other boat! Needless to say, we get second...

It can be hard to grasp the scale of one's surroundings while in Alaska. On first glance, it can feel like you can easily get to the base of the mountains, or cross that river. But once you're in motion, it can quickly become apparent that you're missing something, context. Mountains shouldn't normally be this large, fjords this vast and deep, and animals this large and free. Happy Friday everyone, have a great weekend!

Little bit of ice forming on the Mendenhall lake. I'm watching the fog move through the trees. Hoping to get a nice time lapse.

27/10/2016

Imagine feeling the warmth of a campfire, the crackling noise, the glow, the smell. Now imagine all those things combined with the sounds of crashing waves on sheer rock cliffs, and stars swirling overhead overlapped by a full moon. This was how our night felt on Hawaii's Big Island when we hiked out to the Puʻu ʻŌʻō lava flows. Except that heat, that noise, was all coming from molten basaltic lava flowing down slope at 1100 degrees Celsius. A memorable night in the land of fire spent with Pele!

24/10/2016

There's nothing quite like a sunset at sea. This shot of my father was taken about midway from Mexico to Hawaii. Thousands of miles from land. And some people say there is nothing but water to see when offshore! I took this shot just before dusk as we were getting ready to take some star shots with the sextant.

21/10/2016

Had an amazing hike in the mist today, and to think this trail is behind Costco. Loving the scenery here in the southeast of Alaska!

16/10/2016

When was the last time you walked next to a sailfish? After a wonderful hike with our friends in Candaleros bay on the East side of Baja, we were greeted by this curious sailfish swimming circles around our dinghies. We all watched in awe and wonderment as he continued to circle in the shallows for over 30 minutes.

15/10/2016

We had the pleasure of watching this humpback whale breach, fin slap, tail slap and head-butt the water for over an hour. This was the longest and most active whale display I have ever seen! Not sure why he was so crazy and active but it sure looked like he was having some fun. It was so awe inspiring to see such a large animal completely leaving the water and smashing down with boat crushing force simply a few hundred yards away. Yikes!

13/10/2016

Love this little fishing boat's colors. Many of the work boats here are old wooden vessels, apparently still going strong and definitely full of a little character!

Hey everyone. Wanted to post so you all know we made landfall and have not sunk mere miles from shore! With everything that has been happening since making landfall back in our home state we have let our updates fall behind 🙁. We are still editing video and those should be coming out before too long. In the meantime enjoy this not sailing related photo from Kluane national park I took on a recent bike ride. What, we do land trips too!? I know I know, shame on us 😉

We had 25-30 kts for the past 36 hrs and now are becalmed. So close but not enough fuel to make it. At least we have a pod of dolphins to keep us company!

Been pretty rough past few days. Combined with lots of gear failures has made for pretty slow going. Been having to heave to until light to fix things.

All signs point to us being past the worst of the pacific high. Wind is back but we still have our fingers crossed.

We have yet to troll a lure. It is such a joy and honor on ocean passages to just see a large school of fish in their element gracing us with company.

Surrounded by yellow fin tuna putting on an acrobatics display while devouring little minnows. Amazing to watch. Not sure I will put a lure in.

Just checking the weather for our sail from Hilo, HI to Alaska. We are currently in the final stages of preparation, hoping to leave sometime on Monday! The trip is roughly 2500 miles and should take us 20-30 days. Can't help but think we are crazy for leaving these wonderful warm islands to head back up into the cold regions of the globe again. We should be upgrading our delorme tracker and will try and post that info on here for anyone interested in following along on the trip.

That feeling you get when you row 45 min to shore only to realise you forgot your shoes!

02/07/2016

Second day straight of being trapped on the boat at Lahaina. Winds are too high for Meagan and I to try and row to shore. Needless to say we didn't get much sleep last night. Cruising in Hawaii sure is different than we have experienced so far.
