While Martin McDonagh’s dark tragicomedy film The Banshees of Inisherin is sweeping up awards all over the globe many may not be aware of the strong connections that Sligo has to the Oscar nominated movie.

The work of Martin, along with his brother John Michael McDonagh, has always been deeply connected with the west of Ireland and has acted as the setting of some of his earliest plays such as The Beauty Queen of Leenane and A Skull in Connemara, works that much like his latest film capture the psyche and idiosyncratic nature of rural Ireland.

Martin’s mother was originally from Killeenduff in Easkey and his brother felt drawn back to Sligo when he made the 2014 film Calvary starring Brendan Gleeson, that movie was primarily filmed in the town of Easkey as well as Streedagh beach in north Sligo.

Maeve, named after the legendary Queen of Connacht, was born to Constance in Lissadell, Co Sligo on 13 November 1901. ‘Trawalua Strand & Classiebawn Castle’

Mullaghmore Head, County Sligo, Ireland

I often capture scenes of this historic castle, but recently it’s become my goal to find some lesser seen angles. This can be quite challenging after years of photographing it from the traditional views. Next to Mullaghmore Head lays this stunning beach ‘Trawalua Strand’ which yields commanding views over Classiebawn Castle in the distance! What I enjoy most is that this location shows the lesser seen rear of the castle & orchards, rather than the often-seen front view with Benbulben mountain in the distance.

If you travel the length & breadth of Ireland, you will find no other castle or building that rivals the almost fairy-tale scene of 'Classiebawn Castle' in Sligo. The initial architects & builders sure nailed the perfect spot to build a stunning castle that would mesmerise onlookers for centuries afterwards….

Please feel free to Share this Image & help show off our beautiful country to the rest of the world 💚
