806 years ago the cite of Carcassonne was besieged by Catholic Crusaders on August 1. Six days later the young viscount, Raymond Roger Trencavel, age 24, left the safety of his castle in the walled city to negotiate with the army leader, Simon de Montfort. He wanted to secure the safe conduct for the citizens who had taken refuge inside the walled city. The young viscount was taken prisoner by the enemy and thrown into prison and left to die (or poisoned as some believe). His people were allowed to safely leave the city, but they were only allowed to leave with the clothes on their back. His heroic actions saved the city from being sacked and all the inhabitants being killed or tortured.

Bonjour! Welcome to the page where we can share our photos of the wonderful tour we just took with Carol and her company, Best of France Travels. "It's the only way to go," is how my dear father-in-law described Carol's June 2015 tour to Provence and the Riviera. Honestly, I had my reservations about how my father-in-law, husband, and brother-in-law would take to France, having never been there.
