Is Thailand safe to visit after the Myanmar earthquake? 🌍

On March 28, 2025, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, devastating cities like Mandalay and Sagaing. As of March 31, the military government of Myanmar reports over 2,000 deaths and more than 3,900 injured, with critical infrastructure also severely damaged.

Tremors were felt across Thailand, with fatalities confirmed at three construction sites in Bangkok. Thailand’s major airports are operational, inbound and outbound flights have largely not been disrupted, although Suvarnabhumi Airport was temporarily closed following the incident but has since reopened, with flights now running as usual.

The Thai government has reassured tourists that it remains safe to visit despite the deadly earthquake. The UK Foreign Office advises travellers to stay alert for aftershocks, follow local guidance, and monitor updates.

Measles cases in Europe are at their highest level in 25 years! 📈🦠

Over 127,000 cases were reported in 2024, double the number of cases for the previous year, with Children under 5 accounting for more than 40% of reported cases.

Due to a decline in immunisation coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic, measles cases saw a significant rise in 2023 and 2024. Vaccination rates in many countries have not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels, which heightens the risk of outbreaks.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications. but the MMR vaccine is 99% effective at preventing it. 💉✅ If you're unsure of your vaccination status, check with your GP.

Cholera cases in the UK and Germany have been linked to an ongoing outbreak in Ethiopia. As of 3 March 2025, Ethiopia has reported 223 cases and four deaths this year, with a total of 58,381 cases and 726 deaths since the outbreak began in August 2022.

Cholera is an infection of the intestines that can cause severe diarrhoea. It is usually spread by consuming contaminated food or water and commonly happens where sanitation facilities are poor or damaged. Cholera doesn’t occur in the UK, but there is a very small risk of contracting it when travelling to certain parts of the world.

Most travellers face a low risk of exposure, but if you're heading to areas affected by cholera, it's important to take precautions – maintain good hygiene, drink bottled water, and avoid food that could have been in contact with unsafe water. An effective oral cholera vaccine is also available, given in two doses, one to six weeks apart, for added protection.

The UK Health Security Agency has updated its guidance on the Qdenga® vaccine, the only licensed dengue vaccine in the UK. This vaccine is recommended for travellers aged 4+ who are visiting dengue-endemic areas and have previously had a dengue infection.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that affects millions worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Symptoms can range from mild fever to severe complications, so prevention is key.

If no record is found, don’t worry—it is usually safe to re-vaccinate. A new certificate can then be issued. 🩺✅

🌍 Planning a trip to Europe? Starting in 2025, UK travellers will need ETIAS—Europe’s new visa waiver scheme—to enter most EU countries. 🇪🇺 This digital authorisation is similar to the U.S. ESTA and will be mandatory for short stays of up to 90 days.

ETIAS is expected to be operational in mid-2025, according to the action plan endorsed by the ministers of EU countries. The process will be simple: apply online, pay a small fee, and receive approval within minutes. ✈️ Your ETIAS travel authorisation will be valid for three years or until the travel document you used in your application expires - whichever comes first.

But without it, you’ll risk being denied entry at the border. Don’t let unexpected paperwork ruin your trip!
