Glenesk: The History and Culture of a Scottish Glen by Margaret Fairweather Michie

Glenesk is one of the most beautiful of the Angus glens. Though surrounded by high peaks in its upper reaches and seemingly remote, it is no isolated backwater. A network of hill-paths through the Mounth links Glenesk to Deeside and neighouring Angus glens, while its lower end opens out to the low country of the east. This is one reason why the Glen is so rich in the relics of life and work of the people who have lived there and who have passed through it from early times onwards. This is the story of an upland, rural community, told from the perspectives of the people themselves and covers almost every aspect of glen life. From the distant past to modern day, the book looks at people's changing relationships with the landscape, the buildings they lived, worked and worshipped in and the tools they used.Official documents record the effects of the famine and wars of the 17th-century, and the deprivations suffered either at the hands of marauding Highland caterans or the renegade offspring of their landlords. The text is complemented by many origianl, period photographs which portray the everyday life of the Glen.

About the author (2025)

Margaret Fairweather Michie was the local born teacher and historian who founded the Glenesk Folk Museum. Her love of the Glen, its people and history continues to inspire. Alexander Fenton is a consultant for the European Ethnological Research Center, a former senior assistant editor of the Scottish National Dictionary, and a former director of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland.

This book had been out of print since 2000 and is now available under new covers.
Please note that Sandy Fenton died in 2012.

All in all agood start so far to the season, with the walking tour Saturday past and 2 back to back today. The toon basked in sunshine, and guests enjoyed. Of course it was via a third party but it’s a learning curve even though I’m fae the toon. Ye ken.

Still tentatively considering next final move?

Plus not one note of interest for the wee competition 🤷‍♂️ which in consideration it’s a bargain overall. If no interest it will close by 12 noon tomorrow 26th. No sense in wasting time.

Onward and see what tomorrow brings ....

"Thank You" Letham Primary School! 🌟

Christine recently visited the Primary 6 class at Letham Primary School where she discussed all things Tartan and Kilts! The class were so curious and engaged to learn more about the topic, and were so thankful for the Tartan swatches Christine gave.

We wanted to extend a massive thank you for the beautiful hand written letter on their very own Tartan card, and gorgeous flowers - they have certainly brightened our day!

It was a far different route to the norm, offering a balance yet interactive links of Jacobites, queens, characters and stunning vistas to embrace.
Plus we saw red squirrel, raptors, highland coos( ubiquitous) and a close sighting of two fallow deer. Add the stunning locations, views, overall it was the best by far to date for us here at Bespoke Tours.
Excellent company and guests.

Our most heartiest thanks to our guests, for choosing Bespoke Tours, as we hold dear and appreciate.
